No. Ledger is powered by HW. 1 firmware which is open-source AFAIK and also https://github.com/LedgerHQ/.

I'm afraid this is not entirely true (but I know I'm taking it to the extreme here):

Quote
The firmware is not open source - as vendor NDAs prevent us from releasing a source code that would be of any use to our users. However, the specifications are fully open and detailed, and all cryptographic operations are deterministic, which allow any user to verify that the card is answering what it should and that there is no side channel.

I think Trezor (bitcointrezor.com) is the best wallet out there, it's BIP32 compatible so you can recover your coins to other wallets when it gets lost or stolen + you private keys never touch internet or anything that might be compromised by malware or other viruses. And unlike other cold wallets you can also spend your coins from Trezor, gotta say I love mine.

Most of then can't buy it because of the price. Ledger is the only direct-competitor to Trezor.

And, if the wallet is connected to internet, it isn't a "cold storage".

If you are going for a hardware wallet, I recommend Ledger. An overview of hardware wallets can be seen here.

Ledger is based on a proprietary, closed source secure chip (NSA anybody?), therefore it is inherently less secure than Trezor. It depends on your level of paranoia thou Smiley

Okay, it isn't a cold wallet by definition, but it basically is a paper wallet which you can spend from without exposing your private keys to anything internet connected, transactions are signed in-device.

You are right about the price thou, no reason to protect your bitcoins with a wallet that's worth more than what it holds Smiley

How was Trezor (bitcointrezor.com) not mentioned here thousand times already? It's a 100% solution, an offline, standalone signing device. It's open source and it's securing bitcoins by the design of the process alone and not by a smartcard component like ledger wallet.

I was also looking into to this in past and found a major issue which unfortunately isn't in anyone's power to resolve.

In my country there even has been a service like this, the fees were not ridiculous (10% markup if I remember right) but the worst thing is unbelievably high number of reversed transactions. It's very easy for anyone to buy bitcoin over SMS and then call his provider and cancel the transaction. There's unfortunately no way to protect against this since all those fiat transactions are managed by the cellular providers in-house and only then managed by some payment gateway service...

This is one of many things that need much more time and better general knowledge about crypto to be feasible.

► ► ► TREZOR hardware wallet now available on Amazon
by

Hello everyone,

for those of you who missed this message, TREZOR is now available on U.S. Amazon through our partner http://www.coincadence.com/trezor/. What does it mean? Well you can now buy TREZOR with fiat money (great way to get rid of them). Shipping times are massively reduced from 2-3 weeks -> 2 days(or even next day shipping is available). Buyer protection is handled by Amazon so no need to worry about your precious device being stuck at customs or lost by shipping service.

* SatoshiLabs press release http://satoshilabs.com/news/)
* SatoshiLabs' partner CoinCadence: (http://www.coincadence.com/trezor/)
* Amazon Storefront: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=bl_sr_pc?ie=UTF8&field-brandtextbin=SatoshiLabs&node=541966

Have a nice day!

Hi,

I really want to thank you for running this service, I'm using it almost evey day. If interested we can talk about posting you to our 'featured listings' section on http://uselitecoin.com

I'v got only one feature request and that is buttons (like they have on tradingview.com) for zoom in/out and scroll forward/backward to be able to use this site better on touch screen devices, which kinda struggle to control browsing through chart's history.

Thanks!

► Help UseLitecoin.com fund the development - 100 out of 300 LTC already funded
by
fahrenheit451

UseLitecoin.com needs your helping hand

Hello everyone,

I hope most of you reading this have already stumbled upon my site UseLitecoin.com somwhere in the past and found it
useful to be there, I try to do my best to keep it up to date. However, as many of you probably see, the whole site is pretty
oldfashioned and a bit outdated, especially from the technical point of view. That results in quite insufficient user experience
and poor SEO - which leads to very low income that barely pays for the hosting and domain with no excess profit to reinvest.
This means the site doesn't have the desired positive effect on the community which it could have and certainly should have.

Situation
I'm currently working on an upgrade to WordPress platform (check it here: http://uselitecoin.com/WPtest), which will
provide the desired functionality. Unfortunately I'm really not good in coding/developing and even thou I try to get a hold of it
for quite a while now I can clearly see that this site needs a professional to make it a success. So what I did was to contact
a couple of WP developers and let them quote the price of this job. Those estimates were moving around 500-800€, which
probably doesn't seem to be a whole lot, but to me it currently is a fortune.

About me
I'm a 24 year old student of architecture in Czech Republic. My monthly average income is just about 500€ and it's not leaving
me with much extra money - to be perfectly honest - I live on a tight budget. Even thou I try to work longer hours it takes me
way too long to save money for anything. I have a great passion for the crypto-currency world thou and I try to pursue all of
my ideas. I've started with zero knowledge about web development but I'm learning during the process and by small steps
I'm getting further and further. I hope my small addition to the community does matter in the end. As I mentioned before, I'd
love to do the whole thing myself but it simply doesn't seem to be an option anymore, it needs to be done properly by
someone who knows what he's doing.

Goal
So to make long story short I want to help Litecoin community to grow by creating a fully functional service which would allow
users to easily browse trough all Litecoin related sites and services in one place, with better functionality. I believe this can
easily bring other people to trust Litecoin over some other alt-coins and should also bringing more investors easier. I want to
prove that wide-spread acceptance of Litecoin is already in progress and that at this pace Litecoin will soon be backed by
true fluid economy.

TL;DR
I'm able to put 100 LTC towards the developement from my savings and in the end I would love to have 300 LTC
to offer for the work
. So this is a donation request for 200 LTC which will be used solely to upgrade the site.
It will allow me to pay a professional developer and will let us create a fully grown up site that all of us will hopefully
enjoy to use, share and benefit from.

Thank you very much for reading and remember every little good deed matters, even the tiniest one. If you want to donate
work, I'd be more than happy. If you don't have what to donate just help me by simply sharing this with your friends,
colleagues, etc... Feel free to PM me anytime with any question.

[Need advice] Website with Bitcoin wallet and MtGox API interaction, storing $
by
fahrenheit451
on 16/07/2013, 11:19:15 UTC
Hello guys,

I have a project up in my mind, but I'm struggling to find a solution for it, therefore it might need some special coding to be done, however i'd like to know whether it's even possible first.

So, here goes the question - I need people to be able to send x$ worth of BTC to my site, store it there for a couple of days, weeks and then get the x$ worth of BTC back eventually, depending on some other conditions. Say it would use MtGox or any other exchange as a storage for the $. The point is to create $ wallet on an exchange which people could fill using bitcoins - stable value $-wise, variable value BTC-wise - and have the framework interact with the current balance on this "virtual $ wallet".

Is this possible to create? How diffucult is it to code? Can it be integrated into an existing CMS like WordPress or does it have to have a comprehensive ground up design?

Thank you very much

Thanks for the reply, i was considering this at first, but it's exactly what I want to avoid. I want it to be even simpler than using actual cash - because it's possible. This needs some Apple approach developers:)
