Anyone know what country this Kevin guy lives in? If it is some third world country then none of this matters he gets away with it. If it is USA then he is screwed since he admits he knew something was wrong and still attemtped to (steal) as much as he could before the the site was closed. Its like seeing someone rob a bank, drop some money on the ground while he ran away, then grabbed as much as he could before the cops came....

It's hilarious that all these hyper-libertarians are running their asses off to get the government involved in private enterprise.  Just call Atlas with his private army.
I'm not a libertarian, you fuck.

Atlas is at least rational in this respect, i give him credit for him.

He's not a fucking lunatic like you religious fanatics who believe everything you're told.  You deserve to lose all of your bitcoins because you're so fucking stupid the fucking apes would rule you if it wasn't for the ubermensch.

How anyone can trust MtGox is a lesson in delusions.

wow talk about nerd rage....

You sure can weed out the honest people from the greedy and entitled people just from reading this thread! FYI in my state if you knowingly buy stolen property at a cheap price, even if you are not positive it is stolen but know something is not right, you are just as guilty as the person who sold it and will be charged accordingly. It is a criminal offense no and's if's or but's about it. Your only chance of not having charges brought up against you is the fact that it is bitcoins and not an acknowledged currency as of yet. May be the only way you will stay out of jail. but after reading your very first post i have to say i do not know if i have ever read anything more greedy or self centered in all my life... Funny thing is i cant tell if you are trying to convince everyone else or trying to convince yourself?

Kevin, regardless of whether you were the original hacker (I don't think you were), a large part of the consensus here is that you did pretty much admit to possessing stolen property. Considering your real name and info is out now (thanks to you yourself), it would probably be in your best interest to wait until things calm down a bit, get in touch with MtGox people, and then PUBLICLY return the funds. Otherwise you'll likely get blacklisted and trolled for years to come. Not saying MtGox people are right, either, but at present only two entities are getting attacked. If I were you, I'd do everything I can to not be one of those any more.
Unless, of course, $12,000 is worth it to have your name remembered and dragged through the mud for the next few years.

I am attempting to arrange that the bitcoins that I am in possession of right now, due to this trade, be held by a neutral third party until everyone can cool down about this.

AWESOME! You should mention this in your Post #1 in BIG BOLD LETTERS!

Lol. This isnt awesome. All he is saying is he is giving them to a friend to hold onto until the cops stop snooping so they are not in his possesion. then after people forget aobut this and move onto the next thing that happens he will be home free and cash in the illegal coins.

From all the posts in this thread and all the info gathered by other users not to mention your own words, it is pretty obvious you are the hacker that had caused all this and tried to profit from it. Now that you have been caught and your name is out there you are making up this pitty party story to try and keep your stolen profits. Trying to con all the users of this message board into beleiving you are the victim and big bad mtgox is the bad guy. I think you should be locked up and hope the authorities are looking into this as we speak. I got to hand it to you though, hacking into MtGox, emptying out someones account and buying them back up for .01, then coming on the forum and telling everyone you are the one who tried to buy them, and then asking for pity!? That takes some pretty big balls man.. Two ton balls.... Or just plain stupidity.. Its hard to tell.. Should of just kept your mouth shut, hung low, and hoped you wouldnt get caught. You know the authorities already have your name and address... FBI is probably monitoring your bank accounts, and sitting in a windowless van down the road as we speak... If i were you i would cut up your credit cards, grow a beard, shave your head, buy a false id with your stolen BTC, and rent a boat to the Cayman Islands...

What needs to be done is get the word out about what bitcoins are truly about, not the word of ignorant media whore senators. The more good press we get the harder it will be for the two senators to try and go after it. If we get enough positive press it could become political suicide for them to continue. We need to counter the assumptions they are spreading around and show what bitcoins are about and what they represent. Also let the world know the uses and potential that bitcoins have. This is why i am glad MtGox is jumping in. They have the power to protect bitcoins.

I wonder has anyone reached out to the Senators to edumacate them or should we let them rant for awhile?

I have read some posts that some people have sent letters to these ignorant senators and urging others to do the same. Whether they listened or not i do not know.

standing up for Bitcoins against the two clueless senators and the DEA.

sounds more like rolling over

business is business though: http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=17694.0

I disagree because the way things were going bitcoins would be outlawed in months within the US. The ignorance of the two senators blows my mind. And how they act on that ignorance without even taking the time to look into bitcoins shows you how sad our government and our representatives have become. The only way to keep bitcoins alive is to have some transparency with the government only to the extent as to keep drug dealers and money launderers away from bitcoins. If we cannot seperate ourselves from illegal activity bitcoin as a whole will fall.

I do understand though that it can be a shady area cooperating with the federal government. If they do just enough to help seperate criminals from upstanding citizens it will be fine in my eyes. But if they go as far as letting the government in as any kind of a regulatory role then it will ruin the whole purpose of bitcoins. But thankfully as of now MtGox seems to only want to help fight crime when asked not open the doors. A quote from that article:

" Quote from: Bind on June 15, 2011, 10:37:36 pm
I think ONLY  under legal and required circumstances (court orders), all bitcoin business should cooperate with the law. Not to appease an outraged and out of control legislator, general public, or governments, and certainly not make bitcoins appear more legitimate.

That is we intend to do.

I do not want however to see US politicians go all over the place claiming incorrect things about Bitcoin, just because they are ignorant. They will cause global misinformation as whatever they say is echoed broadly.

We will comply to court orders valid under our jurisdiction after our lawyers confirm there is no other recourse available.

Annoying?  I am sorry that you feel that way.  I asked very nicely yesterday and politely today, but today I was more direct to make the point.  I wasn't rude or offensive.  If that somehow affects my ability to use the forums them I would be very surprised that it is considered actionable.  My 500 post history has not been complained about in the forums or directly to me.  This is the one and only response that I will make on this particular subject.

I meant eodchop and pennytrader.

Lol. Ok that makes more sense.. I was shocked that you put Veldy's name in that statement. He is absolutely right in what he said and i to am annoyed at all these newbies asking the same question over and over which all they had to do was look back one page and they would get there answer. Or just do a quick search. Instead they are freaking out on the forums.... He was much more polite than i was going to be before i came to his post Wink

So i took a 3 hr break form mining to see if things would settle down by then. Started my miners back up and still getting connection problems.. Sad Is deepbit getting DDoS'd again along with other pools and websites or is something else going on? What is even the point of DDoS anyways? Is it used to drive down the next difficulty increase? Or just someone or group who hats bitcoins? Does the government ever do shady things like that? Is there any way to trace the attack back to the originator?
Tycho you have any word on when things might be back to normal?
As I said already, today it wasn't a DDoS, we have some problems caused by our software.
Also I said that I'll make some official statement when things will be stable again. But as you can see, I didn't yet.

Currently some interruptions do happen occasionally, that's why I'm recommending poclbm/poclbm-gui over Phoenix. Sadly this kind of problem can't be fixed fast, but we are working on the solution.
I'll post updates when more information will be available and when pool will be stable.

hmm well that is good news i guess. I did see a post form you earlier this morning saying it wasnt a DDoS but since then everyone and there mother have been saying all day that many sites including deepbit are getting DDoS'd and even some very knowledgeable long time members were saying it. Also I am using pclbm-gui and been connected about 1/4 of the time today which is why i am asking since i have lost about .35 BTC already Sad

but i do appreciate you taking the time to respond and it is good to know you are all over it as usual! It is what keeps me at deep.

so my only question is how can we be sure that this guy really had and lost all of this BTC? I mean really all a person would have to do is see someones posted address in there signature in the forums or in a reported block then post ehre saying please help me get it back! ( which translates to please help me steal this persons money for me!) lol.

But if this is in fact legitimate then i do feel empathy for you... to lose that much is horrible.. But to get that much is questionable...

I don't think many are posting addresses that they use to move their savings around with. Besides OP can prove ownership of the original address easily if there was suspicion.

I highly highly doubt this is fake and feel very bad for OP.

Check out this thread. http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=15984.0  according to this post puts the addresses in the blocks for the public to see. So all this guy would have to do is watch that site, find a large amount being transfered, then either troll the site for fun or actually look for a hacker to help him in his time in need.... If this post i am refering to is another troll post then forgive me i have never checked out blockexplorer.com before but everyone talks about it and says you can see the addresses..

Sorry tycho. Switching to another pool until you figure out this connection stuff that has been plaguing you the past few days.

I can't connect to ANY pool except deepbit and when I am connected it get lost communication so often that it will destroy my GPUs, so I shut down all mining.  I think an attack on major pools [or perhaps an attempt to distrupt miners as opposed to the pools themselves] might be going on.  I even had my IP address changed and it worked very smoothly for about 10 minutes and then after that I got stomped again.  I will disengage dynamic DNS registration and see if perhaps an attacker is following me by domain name.  Seems rather improbable though.

Not sure what the heck is going on.

I have been having the same exact problems today... It went as far as my NIC not working. Had to restart it manually... Not sure what to think att his point... You do not have Comcast for internet by chance do you? Wonder if they would be cracking down on network usage? Wouldnt be the first time they did that....

Hey Tycho does it still not matter if we use deepbit.net or pit.deepbit.net? are there any advantages of using pit.deepbit.net? I am asking because i use GUIMiner and its default is deepbit.net and with allt he DDoS attacks and other problems was wondering if the pit address helps against any of that?

I have been having connection problems with deepbit all day long. sometimes it lasts for an entire hour. It keeps saying problems communicating with bitcoin RPC and deepbit is temporarily unavailable... Started at 630am -8 UTC and the latest one was just 20min ago which lasted for 1 hr and 30min Sad Whats goin on Tycho we getting DDoS'd again?
No, as I said before it's caused by a bug in my pool software.
I'm working to fix it and I will announce when it will be completely fixed.

Are your miners working correctly at this moment or not ?

Oh my bad tycho i didnt see your earlier post about it. So far it has been working for the last 30min. the last connection problem was at 17:05:54 UTC -8 (5:05pm PST)
