Re: Bitcoin : Lifespan of storage media - What will you choose?
by

Maybe Satoshi's storage media deteriorated beyond repair and he lost all his bitcoins. If he had them on a flash drive it might have broken, the silver surface on his cds/dvds might have peeled off, or the ink on his paper wallets might have faded away. We should back up our keys every year to be safe.

The Bitstamp price fell back below $400 down to $396. The pump to $410 was very fast and I thought it would run out of steam, but now I don't know what it will do. There's a wall at $392 and another at 382. Will it go through those walls or go back up past 400 again?

Re: Poloniex Bitcoin Stolen
by

I think this is 3rd or 4th Poloniex related problem I read this week. Bells are ringing for them.
I think it's time to leave Poloniex, we may see a new Cryptsy, Mintpal etc. issue.

The hackers almost always go for the biggest exchanges. When Cryptsy, and Mintpal were hacked they dominated the altcoin exchanges and their hackers mae themselves millionaires. Now Poloniex and btc38 are the top altcoin exchanges I get worried they could be successfully hacked like Cryptsy, and Mintpal.

I hope these problems are not because of history repeating itself, but I might move my coins out of those exchanges to be safe.

Re: Boring market with no strong movements during Chinese holidays
by

I think the bitcoin market will be so boring in the next days with slow price movements because of the upcoming Chinese holidays.
What do you think about these holidays and how it will affect the btc price ?

What Chinese New Year, 8th February...when Chinese everywhere (including those who invest in Bitcoin) make a grab for cash to stick in little red envelopes and hand around their nearest n dearest?

hmmm.....reckon we could see some action yet likes.

There is Chinese New Year on February 8 closely followed nine days later by the Gox creditor's meeting on February 17. If nothing happens at the Gox meeting Chinese New Year might be the biggest influence on the price, but if they announce what will happen to the Gox coins at the creditor's meeting that will have the biggest influence on the price.

I'm currently running a full node on Amazon's smallest, weakest instance type. Their cost for storing the blockchain as it currently stands is on the order of $5/month.

What exactly should I ask for if I want to follow your footsteps and run a full node on Amazon's smallest, weakest instance type? Is it a Linux instance type because they are usually the cheapest?

What exactly should I ask for if I want to follow your footsteps, but if I want a Windows instance type?

How long until it's too late to get confirmed? After you have made the first block with all the addresses in I assume it will be too late, and the coin will be fully launched. Will that be in a matter of days, or weeks? I'm eager to see Decred completed and on exchanges.

It's important to give the last batch enough time to get confirmed - as much time as possible, so it looks like the final date to confirm an invitation by generating an address and submitting it will be Jan 25th. There will be reminders sent to earlier batches that haven't completed yet this week as well. Every effort will be made to get everyone sorted right up until that date, but it's important to move on it as soon as you get it. Time is not our friend, unfortunately.

Are all the giveaway addresses being stuffed into the first block, making it a point of no return after which any late confirmations cannot be accepted? Clams spread the addresses between the first few hundred blocks, but the coin wasn't released until after they had finished adding all the addresses.

Good news is that airdrop was open till last second. So, 5k cap wasn't reached. This means everyone will receive more then 168 decred.

People will need adequate time to get confirmed, so the numbers will be published as soon as people from the latest batch are confirmed and have generated addresses.

Hm.... I had it good but then ... trying to trade on my smart phone ... fucked it up.

Bitfinex thought I was buying at market. I was telling it to buy at stop. ><

Then it thought I sold it. I was telling it to sell at stop.

God dammit.

I appreciate you sharing your experience of attempting to trade on a smart phone. I had a brief look at the trading apps from various exchanges and was considering trying them. Now I'm going to stick to using a laptop for trading.

Using Bitfinex's app sounds like a nightmare.

Re: Thailand and Bitcoin - Rising Power?

I doubt a lot has changed since this article was posted on 20 August 2014 :
http://www.coindesk.com/bitcoin-ban-fear-fades-thailand-exchange-launch/
The last I heard of any bans on Bitcoin in Thailand was back in 2013. The last news update on one of their exchanges was in March of this year, so I guess they still active.
https://bitcoin.co.th/news/

Wikipedia has a page showing the legality of bitcoin in various countries. It gives similar information to your articles.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legality_of_bitcoin_by_country

Regarding Thailand it says the Bank of Thailand declared it illegal 2013, but some companies are still getting business licenses.

Re: Do you consider bitcoin to be an altcoin/ shitcoin?
by

IMO altcoins means they came out after the original one. But it doesn't mean they are not good! Many altcoins has improved a lot compared with the existing bitcoin. Or they supplement the functions of bitcion, like sidechain, colored coins etc.

I think this will be the only informative post in this thread.  By definition altcoins are alternative coins to Bitcoin.  It's simply slang that became accepted as a way to describe everything after Bitcoin.  It doesn't mean altcoins are synonymous with "shitcoins".  I mean that's like saying you can't call an electric company an electric company simply because General Electric came first.  They are all electric companies, just as bitcoin and all altcoins are called the misnomer-ish name "cryptocurrencies".

A large number of alt coins are shit coins, but not all of them are shit. The bad ones tarnish the reputation of the good ones so much that some people view all alt coins as synonymous with shit coins.

Buting on exchanges and holding them, in particular when the price is crashing. Buying when everyone else is dumping helps support a coin by demonstrating that someone believes in it when others have lost faith. It can help stop crashes in the price.

Satoshi didn't ninja launch bitcoin, nobody cared about it when he launched it. There was nowhere to announce its mpending launch unlike today. Nowadays we have the alt announcements section of this forum for new coin announcements.

A ninja launch is when an alt dev doesn't announce the impending launch of his coin in the announcements section.

Re: pendulum will swing back
by

soon the pendulum will swing back: when the stock bubble bursts, the money is not lost, money never vanishes in a fiat money system

it will just be CHANGE HANDS and from there, flow back into other investment vehicles, such as BTC

So when all that Chinese money flows out of stocks, it could flow into Bitcoin again, and this time it will reach higher highs, way above the $1200 we saw before

I know the Chinese can buy vouchers to convert cash into bitcoins, but I thought direct bank transfers to exchanges were banned. How can really big money from China flow into bitcoin again through a voucher system? For example I doubt it's easy to buy $100k worth of vouchers there.

It's apparently quite a bit used. A quick search reveals localbitcoins action, a Bitcoin ATM somewhere and some restaurant accepting it.

A few months ago a cafe in Thailand appeared on reddit, offering Bitcoin payment option. If Bitcoin is illegal there... laws aren't working quite well Grin

Bitcoin regulation could be like China in Thailand. There might be all sorts of rules about what you can do with bitcoins, but perhaps it's not technically illegal. There were countless stories saying China had banned bitcoin, but none of them had got their facts straight.

BTC isn't going to go away thats for sure. its the only coin that has access to the fiat world... its just that for people wanting to work on a different system with more features, its nxt as of the moment. and possibly ehtereum once that gets released.

BTC will always be king.

Bitcoin's been going strong for years and never really been hacked. No alt has proved itself over the same length of time. People won't trust alts enough to let them take over from bitcoin unless they can prove they are unhackable over a period of five years. Bitcon will remain king for the foreseeable future.

Isn't there already 1 shitcoin called 007? And it was an ICO?

Here is one of the last posts in the other 007coin's thread. It got dumped aftter the ICO and the dev ran away. It actually made it onto Cryptsy, but Cryptsy is now apologizing for adding it.

this coin was dead

yeah Let that be a lesson. Next time invest wisely! Sad

We really need a big exchange right now. Cheesy

Indeed. Once the Android wallet is done it would be good to get some PR (not me, I'm no adman).
Before a wallet is released KHC needs a good block explorer. No big exchange will even look at KHC without an explorer.

Bittrex had a scam coin that ripped people off. They added it without a working block explorer and failed to spot an instamine or a premine. I doubt they will list another coin without a block explorer after being tricked once already.

Coinbase wall down.
Whats going on

Sometimes big walls get pulled once people start buying/dumping into them, and sometimes they seem to get pulled for no reason. They are probably often put there just for show.
