I'm asking the OP if it is even possible to buy tokens on his vkcams chat site using cash? Not sure if he accepts bitcoins, but at least that would be possible to implement.

The irony.

Re: Do altcoins effectively "dilute" the 21 million BTC limit?

So you mean to say if we have unlimited supply of other metals like iron, copper, etc then gold prices will never increase!
No, things don't work like this.

Well let's not consider iron or copper which are not precious metals. What about platinum and silver? If all the platinum and silver in the world disappeared would the price of gold likely increase or decrease?

Even if Bitcoin remains #1 I can't help thinking that these alts are keeping the price down. I know a few guys at work who recently got into crypto currencies and they mostly started by buying ETH.

Do altcoins effectivrly "dilute" the 21 million BTC limit?
by
frontdenplastic
on 06/07/2017, 12:56:37 UTC
We all know that there is a hard limit to the number of bitcoins that could ever be minted. That limit is almost 21 million BTC (minus a few Satoshis). Long term holders hope that this limit will cause the values of their coins to go up considerably due to increasing demand.

However, there is no limit to the number of shit coins that can be invented. In fact the ETH shit coin now has a market cap that is of the same order of magnitude as BTC. Furthermore it is an inflationary coin.

If many people move their capital to these alts won't this negate the benefits of the 21 million BTC limit for Bitcoin holders?

Re: Sending bitcoin without the miner fees !
by
frontdenplastic
on 06/07/2017, 12:36:48 UTC
So i was thinking if i send a bitcoin transaction without the miner fee or a very low fee what will happen ? would i get the coins back eventually ? or they will just stuck there forever ! and if that happened how to do that double spend ?
Doing transaction without miner fee will be impossible thing to happen but paying low fee might take your transaction to a very long time of wait. Because miners perspective that if you pay a large fee, that transaction might be urgent or an important one that's is why you are paying a large quantity of transaction fee. Yes your money must return to your account upon pulling out your money from the pool. But if you want to assure that your transaction will be process, pay the right amount and take a lot of patience upon waiting.

What's this about pulling money out of a pool? Your coins are "returned" once the network forgets about your transaction. This happens when nodes stop re-broadcasting your unconfirmed transaction (by default 72 hours but it could be configured to anything).

Alternatively if you have a bitcoin client that allows you to double-spend you could also try to double-spend those coins with a higher fee. If that succeeds, then the previous transaction becomes immediately invalidated.

Re: Newbie question on ranking.

It's actually quite a clever system now I've looked at it closer - if you are ranked low due to not saying much, but have said it over several years, you have the capability to achieve a decent rank quite quickly if you start talking a lot.

Yeah, you should say something at least once every two weeks, if you have the intention of eventually ranking up.

BASE  ON GLOBAL RECOGNITION,ACCEPTANCE OF BITCOIN AND  HACKERS CHALLENGES,IS IT  POSSIBLE FOR BITCOIN TO BE DEVALUED TO ZERO IN THE  NEAR FUTURE?
THIS NO ONE  PRAY FOR,BUT WHAT THOSE  THE  FUTURE  HOLD  FOR  BITCOIN.

Of course at some point in the distant future Bitcoin will be worth 0. At some point in the distant future the earth will no longer exist too.

You should provide a time frame for your question in order to get more reasonable answers. Were you thinking of 1 year, 10 years, or 100 years down the road?

The first tranche of the fund, estimated to be valued about $10m, is in the final stages of closing, and is expected to be announced by the end of this month.

Although this is a good start $10m won't move the price much.

Re: Why is big blocks bad?
by
frontdenplastic
on 06/07/2017, 11:27:18 UTC
Big Blocks are not really bad in and of themselves. What's bad are those people who think that "Big Blocks = Scaling". It is not. Doubling the block size and getting 2x the number of transactions while suffering a quadratic increase in computational costs can hardly be called scaling. It is just an incremental improvement that you could make to the protocol as computing and network resources become cheaper and more abundant.

Re: What do you think about Pump-dump groups?
by
frontdenplastic
on 06/07/2017, 11:01:51 UTC
I'm starting to see a lot of threads regarding pump and dump groups in the forums with some links to the Telegram groups associated with them. With all honesty, what do you think about these groups and do you support them?

I've came across pump-dump groups on online game markets in the past. While I'm not sure, I think it has the same methods and goals.

You may think you can make big profits, it's kinda unlikely, unless you can outsmart the system. The person who makes the most profit is the one who calls when to buy or sell whatever cryptocurrency, as he makes the first transactions.

Ex. Caller says "buy EOS". The price of EOS will then rise a bit depending on how many members the group has. But before the caller makes that call, he buys EOS first so he gets EOS on lower prices. Same concept when the caller calls the sells.

Yeah, those pump and dump groups make money front-running their own members. That is in addition to the membership fees. I think they are scum.

Too little collateral -> negative trust.
Too much collateral -> negative trust because you don't need the loan and therefore you must be trying to buy trust.

Sometimes it just seems that you can't win with the trust system. Not that I am looking for a loan or anything. I've got plenty of BTC.

How would you inconclusively prove that a reputation loan has taken place? You would need to know the intent of the borrower, and the last time I checked reading people's minds was not a science.

Re: Ban Bitcoin XT connections to my node?
by
frontdenplastic
on 02/09/2015, 23:04:45 UTC
Your approach only works for nodes sending the string 'Bitcoin XT'. XT nodes are currently relaying the exact same information so there's no point in block them until January 2016.

Code:
# chmod 755

I appreciate the mention.

chmod 755 does for some reason often feel like the answer to everything    Smiley

No, chmod 777 is a much more powerful solution to permissioning issues.

Re: AT&T has effectively banned Bitcoin nodes by closing port 8333 via a hidden fire

Change your ISP.
Problem solved Wink

Or get business class AT&T if you like them so much. They don't block any ports on business class. For residential service they've already been blocking port 25 for a long time. It is not surprising that they are blocking 8333 as well, probably even mistaking it for a botnet command and control channel.

Re: Do you trust the miners?
by
frontdenplastic
on 02/09/2015, 01:09:01 UTC
You need to make sure that the system is designed in such a way that miners' interests are aligned with the interests of most users'. This means that they should be able to compete with one another to confirm as many transactions as practically possible and they should be adequately rewarded for their efforts. If you try to change the rules to force miners to do more work for less then you might jeopardize this alignment.

Re: Yay or Nay to Increasing Block Size to 20mb?
by
frontdenplastic
on 09/05/2015, 05:57:47 UTC
The other option would be to change the block time to 2 minutes.
I'm not sure why that wasn't discussed more.

Because that will cause more frequent orphan blocks. It has been said in this kind of threads before.

I'd like to see an estimated % of increased orphan blocks at 2 minutes. Then weigh that against the inconveniences that will arise from 20 Mb blocks. Pretty sure a "slightly" higher increase in orphans would be preferable. Still, I'm sure Gavin and co have their reasons.

Why don't you try running p2pool with their 30 second blocks? P2pool blocks (or shares) are essentially lower difficulty Bitcoin blocks used to measure your mining contribution. If you have a slightly slower connection than the other p2pool miners it is not uncommon for 50% of your blocks to get orphaned. Now 2 minutes is not as bad as 30 seconds, but you should not assume that the number of orphans would be insignificant.

So forgive me for growing up on a western democracy where we favor:  clearly posting the rules in advance, giving detailed punishments for breaking said rules ahead-of-time and supplying inadvertent tortfeasors such as myself with an opportunity to redress grievances against the enforcers of the rules should they also be culpable.

3.2% of the US population is incarcerated, paroled or in probation. 3% of the forum have been banned. Are you also one of the 3-3.2% of the population who are in some kind of trouble?

If you check out the linked in profile of the Assistant US Attorney prosecuting this case:

https://www.linkedin.com/pub/michele-korver/4/405/977

it seems like she considers herself an expert in the following areas:

Quote
Wiretapping and electronic surveillance
 International and transnational organized crime
Digital currencies, darknet websites, and other internet related investigations
Money Laundering and Bank Secrecy Act investigations
 Asset Forfeiture

I suspect that the government is just testing the waters to see how far they can clamp down on Bitcoin traders and probably considers this Assistant US Attorney as the best and most motivated person to handle the case.
