I saw a vendor selling stencils for $50, but I assumed they were steel. Steel stencils are the only ones I've ever seen. So possibly they were mylar or something else. Seems expensive for mylar though. Is that what non-steel stencils are made of?

They can make them out of a nylon screen sort of like a silk screen for t-shirt printing. That type needs a wood or metal frame and the screen with the stencil you want to use is stretched and attached to the frame.  You either manually align the screen and board or use a machine that holds the board and screen in alignment

If you are going to offer stencils, it would probably be helpful to people to include the location of any through holes to use as alignment makers.  That way people without a Stencil8 or similar setup wont have to fiddle to much with aligning their boards.

There must be a reason why Avalon created 8 chip boards and Klondike is going for 16 and 64.

ok, either I cant count, or we are looking at different pictures/schematics but it looked like there were 10 chips, on 8 boards, making one module.

The K16 board will cost anyone about $65 if they want to go to Digikey and Mouser to buy all the parts themselves. Good luck soldering in those 325+ parts.

Its doable for anyone with 1. experience and 2. Patience      I don't think it would be much for someone to build one or to, but if you are building 20, 30, 40+ Id except you have the sense and cash to pay for a assembly company to do it for you.

with the 10 and 20 chip boards, will I be hooking up 1 USB per board? or will the boards daisy chain together to "talk" to the computer/internet?

So, after looking over the design and PCB and BOM of the ASIC, it seems that all that's needed to build a clone of Avalon s units is the FPGA firmware?  everything else seems to be online that's needed to the plans off to a PCB factory and get populated boards back.   I doubt at an individual level the costs of building a clone would be worth it, but if someone was building a large miner why wouldn't this be a better route to go then redesigning a whole new system

If/when then first 5000 chips of batch to sell out, are you willing to open the other 5000 chips to people to buy?   Was hoping to get 3-400 but been delayed on collecting the rest of the required BTCs

do you think there was a specific reason the layout of the avalon boards is what it is? ie groups of 10 in larger modules.  I would have to wonder about why they didnt go for one big board instead of groups of small boards.   Not having the data sheet and limited information on how these chips work, I think it would be pretty perspicuous to think large chip boards are going to be designed and working before the smaller chip count boards.

Im not trying to say one is better then the other, as I honestly have no clue what the "best" design may be.  I do hope that there are multiple board designs with different chip counts so a greater number of people can get involved.

Until more people/companies follow through with what they offer, everything will be tainted scam with the onus on you to prove the world you are the real deal.   This whole business of running pre-orders for things months down the road really soured people.

Gotta control the kids somehow...make sure they understand the lay of the land.   And no one wants to read the same newbie questions over and over again.
