I see your point, but agree with R2D221 and Jon Matonis. Don't know whether 'catastrophic' is the right word, but it would create too much confusion.
As per your example, from the small/medium business or even customer's perspective, you'll be more likely dealing with amounts ranging say between BTC0.01 to BTC100 rather than BTC0.00014321. A few examples:
BTC99.15 = XBT99150000
BTC1.456 = XBT1456000
BTC0.025 = XBT25000
To me, that doesn't look much better than 0.00014321, does it?

Numbers larger than 999 are generally presented with commas for readability. There is no convention for digit separators for numbers less than zero. So your comparison should be
BTC99.15 = XBT 99,150,000
BTC1.456 = XBT 1,456,000
BTC0.025 = XBT 25,000
BTC0.00286 = XBT 286
Only the last two of these numbers is in the range of realistic daily transactions (e.g. song download or lunch), which are the transactions the display unit should be optimized for.

I've gone round and round with support staff about this, and the final word (from Sam) is that they have no intention of paying me one cent more.

Yes please elaborate, I'd guess that the disputed amount revolves around the change in BTC price, OP is trying to get the same amount of BTC back that he paid, but KNC have refunded the $ amount, in which case there is no scam.
Quite the opposite, actually. I paid during the first batch of orders when the price of bitcoins was around $830 USD. The purchase price was $203,320 USD. I requested a refund when it was around $480 USD. They used $495 USD as the exchange rate to compute my refund, even though it wasn't trading anywhere near there, thereby shorting my refund (see the refund at https://blockchain.info/address/1FCBP2nNjWE5CnSxqdpBW33RAeVJ1RGQWx)
Since that time the exchange rate has increased, and they are claiming that they don't owe me any more. Their support said things like

something i find rather disconcerting about bitcoin is a lack of justification/explanation for some of the design decisions, in particular the choice of doing 256-bit ecdsa keypairs over secp256k1 vs secp256r1 (a.k.a. P-256) for wallets...

Since 2007 there is evidence that the supposedly random constants in secp256r1 may have been manipulated by the NSA to provide a backdoor. See http://www.wired.com/politics/security/commentary/securitymatters/2007/11/securitymatters_1115. Presumably Satoshi was aware of this. The Koblitz curves cannot have been so "cooked"; see http://crypto.stackexchange.com/questions/10263/should-we-trust-the-nist-recommended-ecc-parameters/10273#10273.

The six units will be hosted, not shipped. Bids will be considered in order of amount (earlier bids preferred as a tie breaker) to determine who gets the earliest delivery.

I am auctioning off (the orders for) six (6) 500GH mining units from Butterfly Labs. These were originally ordered as two 1500GH rigs, but Butterfly Labs has changed the specs on the units since the time of the order and now each 1500GH rig will be shipped as three 500GH rigs. Your rigs will be upgraded so that each one includes an integrated Nexus 7 mining host as the front panel display. I have not yet taken delivery of the rigs.
