I see your point, but agree with R2D221 and Jon Matonis. Don't know whether 'catastrophic' is the right word, but it would create too much confusion.

As per your example, from the small/medium business or even customer's perspective, you'll be more likely dealing with amounts ranging say between BTC0.01 to BTC100 rather than BTC0.00014321. A few examples:

BTC99.15 = XBT99150000
BTC1.456 = XBT1456000
BTC0.025 = XBT25000

To me, that doesn't look much better than 0.00014321, does it?

Numbers larger than 999 are generally presented with commas for readability. There is no convention for digit separators for numbers less than zero. So your comparison should be

BTC99.15 = XBT 99,150,000
BTC1.456 = XBT 1,456,000
BTC0.025 = XBT 25,000
BTC0.00286 = XBT 286

Only the last two of these numbers is in the range of realistic daily transactions (e.g. song download or lunch), which are the transactions the display unit should be optimized for.

On April 11 I cancelled our most recent order from kncminer.  On April 24 I received a "refund" that is short of the correct amount by more than $6,000 USD. I've gone round and round with support staff about this, and the final word (from Sam) is that they have no intention of paying me one cent more.

Sorry to pile on to this, but I thought it best to let you all know.

Can you explain how this came to be for the benefit of others who may be facing similar fraudulence?

sorry to hear they raped you too - the fearful part is we are going to get used to it and start liking it... Embarrassed

Yes please elaborate, I'd guess that the disputed amount revolves around the change in BTC price, OP is trying to get the same amount of BTC back that he paid, but KNC have refunded the $ amount, in which case there is no scam.

Quite the opposite, actually. I paid during the first batch of orders when the price of bitcoins was around $830 USD. The purchase price was $203,320 USD. I requested a refund when it was around $480 USD. They used $495 USD as the exchange rate to compute my refund, even though it wasn't trading anywhere near there, thereby shorting my refund (see the refund at https://blockchain.info/address/1FCBP2nNjWE5CnSxqdpBW33RAeVJ1RGQWx)

Since that time the exchange rate has increased, and they are claiming that they don't owe me any more. Their support said things like

Hello,

The bitcoin exchange rate at the time of refund was 495 USD.
We will not be refunding any additional funds on this matter.

Hello Neal,

You have paid for your orders in bitcoins and you actually paid much less bitcoins that you have received from us:
11707 - 121.96 BTC and have been refunded 205.37 BTC
12008 - 121.56 BTC and have been refunded 205.37 BTC

You have received 167.22 BTC more than you actually paid for the order.

Ok

So as this was a USD value based transaction, how about you send us back the 410 BTC and then we will recalculate and send again.

As far as I can see you used us to hedge the price of BTC paying only a fraction of the coins we have sent you. This was not the terms you agreed to you agreed to when purchasing so if you want to take this further feel free, but you will receive no more coins from us.

Thanks,
Sam

Re: why did bitcoin choose secp256k1 over secp256r1?

⭐ Merited by vapourminer (1)
something i find rather disconcerting about bitcoin is a lack of justification/explanation for some of the design decisions, in particular the choice of doing 256-bit ecdsa keypairs over secp256k1 vs secp256r1 (a.k.a. P-256) for wallets...

can anyone provide a justification for using secp256k1 over secp256r1 besides "that's just the way it is" or "so it was written in the great book"?

Since 2007 there is evidence that the supposedly random constants in secp256r1 may have been manipulated by the NSA to provide a backdoor.  See http://www.wired.com/politics/security/commentary/securitymatters/2007/11/securitymatters_1115.  Presumably Satoshi was aware of this.  The Koblitz curves cannot have been so "cooked"; see http://crypto.stackexchange.com/questions/10263/should-we-trust-the-nist-recommended-ecc-parameters/10273#10273.

Checked out the source.  2,000,000 coins premined in the first two blocks.

Code:
if(nHeight < 3) //premine bounties
{
nSubsidy = 1000000 * COIN;
}

Obvious scamcoin is obvious.

How are u planning to ship them?

The six units will be hosted, not shipped.  Bids will be considered in order of amount (earlier bids preferred as a tie breaker) to determine who gets the earliest delivery.

[AUCTION] 6x 500GH Butterfly Labs Rigs, hosted for 1 month
by

I am auctioning off (the orders for) six (6) 500GH mining units from Butterfly Labs.  These were originally ordered as two 1500GH rigs, but Butterfly Labs has changed the specs on the units since the time of the order and now each 1500GH rig will be shipped as three 500GH rigs.  The original order can be seen here: http://www.gafter.com/~neal/Order100015403.pdf.  The specs on these units can be seen here: https://products.butterflylabs.com/homepage/500-gh-s-bitcoin-miner.html.  Your rigs will be upgraded so that each one includes an integrated Nexus 7 mining host as the front panel display.  These were among the last purchased as 1500GH rigs before Butterfly Labs stopped accepting orders for them.

I have not yet taken delivery of the rigs.  Butterfly Labs most recent estimate is that their backlog of orders will be shipped by the middle of September; see https://forums.butterflylabs.com/announcements/692-bfl-asic-status-3.html#post43041.  Because Butterfly Labs does not allow any changes to the ownership or shipping address of existing orders, your rigs will be shipped to the hosting facility described here: http://www.butterflylabs.com/third-party-hosting/ and set up to mine on your EMC pool account.  Included in your purchase is the first month of hosting.  During that month we will complete the ownership transfer and you can arrange for continued hosting, change pools, and/or you can arrange for your rig to be shipped to you.

Bidding starts at 180 BTC per unit, and the bidding increment is 5 BTC.  Please post your bids on this thread.  When you bid, please also send me a private message with evidence of your ability to pay (for example, a bitcoin address with sufficient balance along with a message signed using its private key).  I will periodically post a tally of the accepted bids.

I will accept bids posted here with a posting date on or before August 27 2013.  I may end the auction early if all units are sold.
