Does anyone want to put up their Wazirx XID here?
by
gentleman2019
on 20/10/2020, 23:53:05 UTC
WazirX's help file says clearly matching against that XID is not guaranteed but want to try it once.

Anyone want to share their XID here? Some people may prefer to trade with you (based on your posts!)

What do you use to bet IPL in India?
by

Noticed many Indians posting here on IPL betting.

If you don't mind, how are you getting on the action? Some folks I know were using Betfair but it stopped accepting India customers recently. Are you using a Betfair clone in India? (would prefer Betfair over a book honestly)

Thanks..

What were the precursors of Bitcoin?
by
gentleman2019
on 24/09/2020, 21:34:05 UTC
Bitcoin is often described as the 'first cryptocurrency' in media, but I vaguely remember there was some history before Satoshi's (amazing) implementation.

I remember hashcash (not a currency) which was used to prevent spam way before Bitcoin, and Bitcoin uses its idea.

What were the other attempts at cryptocurrencies or precursors before Bitcoin?

Does Bitcoin (or other ccs) also not have a 'central' control?

Just a thought. Of course its decentralised by an order of magnitude compared to fiat or other alternatives, but what about the process/team that decided the 21 million coin limit for example? How are such rules changed by the way? Is it the same dev team that pushes changes to the Core release that decides these things?

Re: Why is the price of BTC (and any other crypto) always higher in Asian countries?

The price of bitcoin differs from one exchange to another, and also fluctuating. The difference is what is confusing you which is as a result of trading volume on individual exchanges.

Across exchanges and P2P sites it consistently tracks the rate on US exchanges and is always 2-3% higher in Asia. Been observing since a long time.

Its consistently higher that what the normal currency exchange rate would suggest in Asian countries.

For example if you multiply the USD rate of 1 BTC with the CNY rate, its 1 BTC = CNY 73,600, but exchanges there have it around CNY 75,500.

In other countries in Asia and South America also BTC is more expensive to buy in non-USD currencies than in USD.

Why is this the case?

What is the actual fee % on a transaction? (or let's calculate this!)
by
gentleman2019

⭐ Merited by Quickseller (1)
I think the per Byte calculation is confusing for beginners (it is to me), and also unhelpful in understanding/estimating transaction costs. To answer the question 'how much BTC will it cost me to send 0.15 BTC to my friend?'.

Some explorers usefully provide the total fee. For example in https://www.blockchain.com/btc/block/000000000000000000092072d35d34e3cf35c26c18bb468e99ad6babcff07b4d

Quote
Fee Reward 0.12328166 BTC
Transaction Volume 4846.03749344 BTC

This means the fee paid is (100*0.12/4846.04) = 0.002544% of the transaction amount for this block. (Assuming that the volume does not include the fee - please correct me if there are any other wrong assumptions in the calculation).

Has someone calculated the total of this for all blocks? If not, can the techies here run the calculation or show me how to get the raw data (I only know Excel Smiley)

Would also love to see these important data points from this analysis:

1. How the transaction fee % is changing over the years.

2. The transaction fee % for smaller transaction amounts which are the majority of transactions (as transaction size does not impact the fee, so larger transactions skew the % down).

Re: How do we calculate the correct transaction fee to send?
by
gentleman2019
on 15/01/2020, 22:21:06 UTC
To answer your other question, yes you can include a very small fee and it might take a long to for your transaction to confirm if it ever does. After several days, most nodes will ‘forget’ your transaction if it doesn’t confirm but it will remain valid as long as all the inputs remain unspent. This means someone may broadcast your transaction long into the future if it is still valid. This means you should keep your private keys, including backups if you ever even try unsuccessfully to send coin between wallets.

Wow, so there is no way to cancel an unconfirmed transaction even after say 2 weeks of it being unconfirmed? What happens then? How to get it on the blockchain later?

What's the simplest way of calculating the optimum fee? For 'Satoshi per byte', is it possible to know how many bytes the transaction is likely to take?

Also, suppose the transaction is not urgent (say changing BTC between own wallets or sending to a relative), can it be sent with very low fee? What's the worse that can happen - will the transcation get cancelled/not go through on the blockchain?

Thanks!

Hello,

I want to sell some bitcoins worth 30K INR with a trusted middleman involved.

If this is still open I recommend you exchange with WazirX. I am NOT paid to promote this website or anything but, I personally use it once in a while and had a good experience. Plus, You won't have to worry about getting scammed here. Additionally, the conversion rates are much better than the actual $-INR value if you are planning to sell BTC.

What has your experience been in withdrawing fiat from WazirX?

USDT/INR on Waz seems illiquid to me, last trade 70.00 and it was 5 hours ago.

Didn't get what the other leg of the arbitrage is here. EUR/USDT is pretty close?

Satoshi's own short summary is a great TL:DR of what Bitcoin is

I've been reading and trying to understand the various aspects of Bitcoin in the last few weeks.

Though I had seen the original whitepaper when I started down the rabbithole, I saw Satoshi's own short summary for the earliest newsgroups today. (source https://satoshi.nakamotoinstitute.org/emails/cryptography/1/)

It could be helpful to beginners as a good TL:DR

Quote
I've been working on a new electronic cash system that's fully peer-to-peer, with no trusted third party.

The main properties:
 Double-spending is prevented with a peer-to-peer network.
No mint or other trusted parties.
 Participants can be anonymous.
New coins are made from Hashcash style proof-of-work.
The proof-of-work for new coin generation also powers the network to prevent double-spending.

Next is the Abstract which fleshes out more technical details and finally the link to whitepaper:
Quote
A purely peer-to-peer version of electronic cash would allow online payments to be sent directly from one party to another without the burdens of going through a financial institution. Digital signatures provide part of the solution, but the main benefits are lost if a trusted party is still required to prevent double-spending. We propose a solution to the double-spending problem using a peer-to-peer network. The network timestamps transactions by hashing them into an ongoing chain of hash-based proof-of-work, forming a record that cannot be changed without redoing the proof-of-work. The longest chain not only serves as proof of the sequence of events witnessed, but proof that it came from the largest pool of CPU power. As long as honest nodes control the most CPU power on the network, they can generate the longest chain and outpace any attackers. The network itself requires minimal structure. Messages are broadcasted on a best effort basis, and nodes can leave and rejoin the network at will, accepting the longest proof-of-work chain as proof of what happened while they were gone.

Do multiple BitPay transactions add up towards the 3k limit for KYC?

Just made a BTC payment to a merchant which uses BitPay for processing and total amount was just lower than $3k. Have not been asked KYC.

I'm wondering if I use the same merchant again, will the next transaction add towards the $3k limit or can I keep doing multiple transactions without KYC?

How are double spends and other fraud transactions dealt with by the blockchain?
by
gentleman2019
on 22/12/2019, 17:13:56 UTC
Lets say in my Electrum wallet I have 0.5 BTC which I send to an address, and then a few seconds later send the same 0.5 BTC from my Electrum wallet to another address. (How will this even be allowed by the wallet? does it require hacking into wallet software?)

How is this double spend resolved? Is it chronological order, i.e. will the first transaction be accepted by the blockchain and the second one be rejected as the address does not now have enough balance?
