Re: how does escrow work?
by

I was actIly planning on trying to sell the stuff on bitmit.net.

So it would be the purchaser's responsibility to video the unboxing? I never thought of that.

Do claims of scams happen a lot with escrow or do people tend to fly pretty straight when escrow is involved?

It just seems like the purchaser has a bit of an advantage, nothing to lose from trying.

Does the ID verification help a lot?

how does escrow work?
by

I know basically how escrow works, but I don't understand how it would really remove risk.

Say I want to sell an iMac computer. It is worth a fair amount and I am a relative newb on here so somebody is going to want escrow.

So say I sell the iMac for 10 bitcoins. The purchaser sends 10 bitcoins to the escrow service, I send the computer.

The two risks I can't figure out are:
What if instead of sending a computer, I send a box of books?

Buyer tells escrow agent and I don't get bitcoins.

But what if I did send the computer, but the purchaser claims that it was just a box of books? How do I prove otherwise?

What if I send a broken computer, so the purchaser is tricked into signing for it, even after opening it?

What if I send a working computer, but purchaser drops it before funds are released, claims it was broken?

Thanks.

If somebody was offering to sell me a 23xx order, what do you think that would be worth in btc?

The same price as one on the website.

I don't think he'll go for that. The several months he paid ahead must be worthy something?

This is going to sound like a stupid question, but I don't really understand the escow.

If you send the device but we use an escrow service, I get the device but say the box only had books in it or something. How do you actually prove that you sent this device, how do I ever actually prove that you didnt?

Does knc make it easy to buy somebody's preorder by just changing the address or is it more difficult than that?

Do you think that a $500 million investment in mining hardware over the next year would equate to a $500 price of bitcoins, or miners mining at a loss bothin terms of dollars and bitcoins?

$500 million is arbitrary number for example.

I edited a little bit, as per discussion. Don't know if it is more proper to edit post or make new post, also,  might have undersized.

Feel free to suggest changes.

It was my first draft, just wanted to get some numbers on there just to help people visualize.

I will edit some this afternoon.

I have KNC down for a total of 2 ph, it probably looks like more because when there is an addition underneath it throws everything else above it off visually. I picked 2ph instead of 500 th just to go for worst case scenario.

Hashfast and icedrill, used their numbers, will add more for January hashfast. Bitfury, pretty much just used this thread's numbers.

Why do I think Avalon will have so many chips? Their next gen coming out in October, no preorders, lots of nre money from previous success and mining with people's equipment or not shipping to keep difficulty down. I will adjust downward.

Asicminer, I am fairly confident in that number. Friedcat knows what he is doing and has more money than anyone. Comitted to 20% of the network. Shrewd business man. 28nm chip 8x more power efficient, so they can be up to 400th right there. Double that with their leasing plan, and throw in 200th for sales.

As for shipping dates, purely just guessing. It would take a lot of research to nail down better estimates, which most people would disagree with anyway.

I will pretty it up though and post update.

I plan on mining with my Jupiter for a few weeks and then selling it for more than I paid for it. We'll see how that works out, but I can still mine with it while trying to sell, win win.

I agree, good plan. If these will be delivered in time, a lot of BTC can be mined and you will be able to sell it immediately with good price

Yes it is amazing what people will pay for the product in hand. I just have to sell a few days before a similar product can be shipped the day it is paid for. the end of preorders.

16k still too expensive. I would purchase immediately for 10k though.

you may want to revisit http://mining.thegenesisblock.com/ and set shipping date to jan/2014

10k is still way overpriced

they are supposed to announce their remaining product line "by the end of the month" unless they miss their second self imposed deadline.

i think they must decide to ship 3x hashpower for the same price or slash prices by a third to live up to their own hype and leave any meat on the bone for their customers... or implement a SERIOUS protection plan. guarantee a return of invested btc, minimum, for anyone to take them seriously.

Under this scenario, http://mining.thegenesisblock.com/a/90782dc52a , the difficulty would be 557 billion by the end of 2014. That would be almost 4,000 petahash. Even at $1 a gigahash, that is $4 billion worth of hardware, not to get into the electricity consumption.

I think this scenario is more likely:
http://mining.thegenesisblock.com/a/e9b41de60d
That is 2 billion for January (yes it says august), which is unrealistically high, with a 400 million increase, every month. that is another 2.8ish petahash a month.

Of course all numbers a can be thrown out the window if there is another bubble before then.

You have to admit though, it is a pretty fair plan.
I was hesitant for so long because I thought the MPP would only be in USD, but it being priced in btc makes all the difference.

Oh, I don't mind preorders. I think a lot of people will be terribly dissapointed when they realize that no preorder means no profit.

Why would you sell a product in hand for less than you would get from mining with it?  Are there any asic manufacturers listed as charities?

Haven't heard anything new in a few days. I wonder if lots of people are buying these units?

It seems like competitors will be able to demolish these prices by the time December rolls around. Who cares about efficiency at this point in the game?

Do you think they will try again or stick with BFL's prices?

I can't find a source to back up 1000th for asicminer by the end of  the year, I am sure I read it somewhere, but it must not have been official. A lot of people will have alotmore to say than me, but a few points:

Friedcat seems pretty motivated to keep a roughly 20% share of the hashrate. While they might have dropped to 10% lately, I am pretty confident they are ready for what's to come.

Friedcat would have access to more money than any of the other manufacturers.

The next generation of their hardware is known to be in the works.

They plan on leasing out their hardware, which I would assume means they will have a lot of it.

And one last bit of evidence would be their share price. If everyone lost confidence in friedcat's ability to deliver, their shares would be worthless. They have dropped recently but only because of their recent lull.

Re: CoinTerra announces its first ASIC - Hash-Rate greater than 500 GH/s
by
gkm22d
on 23/08/2013, 21:40:01 UTC
At $8 per GH that would be $216,000,000 in hardware. (Monarch & Cointerra)
At $15 per GH that would be $405,000,000 in hardware.  (Hashfast)
At $20 per GH that would be $540,000,000 in hardware.  (Bitfury October)
At $50 per GH that would be $1,350,000,000 in hardware (BFL, AsicMiner, Avalon, Bitfury August).

Possible but unlikely.

And with a single post you have me turned 180 degrees on the profitability of mining. It kind of puts everything in perspective, doesn't it?

Didn't hashfast partner with icedrill for 250-363th for November? (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=269216.0)
Friedcat, he has more money than anyone, has said he would have a petahash ready for the end of the year. (Looking for source).
