I have cygwin, and have started the X server. But when I run ssh -X user@ubuntu machine, bitcoin-qt says it cannot connect to my X server.
Unless you have an X server running i WINDOWS, it doesn't matter how much forwarding you have.
I missed that cygwin has an X server. Sorry. I haven't looked at cygwin in a long time and at that time I
didn't see any X server.
I've also tried with Xming.
Perhaps I'm not setting DISPLAY properly before running bitcoin-qt? I've tried a number of things and I'm not certain which it should be....

I also have putty, with X11 forwarding enabled. That doesn't work either (same error).

Same here, just the raspbian wheezy package. Don't bother though, it runs so slow I don't think it's worth it. You really need an external HD also.
I use my pi only for mining (not to run bitcoind). It does that just fine....
I've gotten them working on ubuntu and raspbian wheezy, so I'd vote for any Debian. It's a nice family because there's a lot of users and support.

Sorry - been away a while.
I was running Centos 5. Trust me, it was a bitch trying to get bitcoind compiled and running (and I'm a 20+ year 'nix admin). I'm guilty of not remember the exact problem, but I think the compile was failing on some missing cryptographic library routine that Redhat don't support for a reason I don't quite remember either....
I'm now running bitcoind on Ubuntu 12.04. An absolute breeze compared to Centos 5...
ps. my mining is done via cgminer running on raspbian on a pi....
which raspImage did you use ?

What structure did you have in mind for this group?
I am trying to start a charity (Bitcoin association of Great Britain) which would have it's leading object as the advancement of education for organisations who wish to incorporate bitcoin.
There is another thread started concerning this with a video of me talking about it.
I have attended all the most recent London bitcoin meetups (highly recommended) and have had a lot of enthusiasm for this but limited support. Let me know if you are interested in sharing ideas?
My ideas are all on github, search for BitcoinAssociationofGreatBritain or bagb org uk

Where did the info on the units' sizes come from -- do we have a solid idea on what they will be?
Looks like on KnC's site, they list Jupiter at 160 x 160 x 200 (I'm assuming cm), and 4kg weight. For those of us who are metrically-challenged
that converts to roughly 5ft x 5ft x 6.5ft, and just under 9 lbs.And that's just one unit...! I'm hoping that they've managed to scale it down a bit, but I've opted at this point to use their hosting plan (whenever they have more info).
Usually sizes are in mm, not cm!

but id drop the peon, arch is a pain, a normal rasp weezy and you can compile cgminer from git source hapily..

Ah, I misunderstood. Was the point that the original Jalapeno's be powered by the USB hub, being that they are only 3 watts or so? I guess a computer would have no problem with that?

I'll bear that in mind next time. I bought powered because I'd been reading that the pi is much stabler with them.....I've mentioned it to a few others who may not be frequenting this forum, so lets do it anyway. Would be good to grab a pint :-)
