I don't doubt it. He was pretty well known to be a scammer but was protected :/

Maybe - *I* didn't know, though I do now.  In addition to everything mentioned above, he was a silver member of the bitcoin foundation. That's what convinced me.  I am stunned that the Foundation has remained utterly silent on the matter.

inputs had a nice little bitcoin foundation badge. That should probably count for something.

Silver member, as I recall.  Yes, this reflects poorly on the Foundation.  Hope that means something.
Educate me if I am wrong Bitcoin Foundation membership is purchased. Im sure there must be some sort of approval https://bitcoinfoundation.org/support

I had a little over 3.4 in CL. The CDs still show on my page. Mine are spread into 3 CDs about a week apart. I've got one coming due next week. I'll withdraw if I can but somehow I don't think that will happen.

TradeFortress seemed like an upstanding enough person and I started very small and got braver over time. I'm disappointed as it does not seem the promises of security were kept. I hope that some of this can be rectified.

I wonder if there is any police investigation. I noticed this UK based company http://www.sytech-consultants.com/ that claim to do Digital Forensics on bitcoin.

http://www.sytech-consultants.com/blog/2013/worlds-first-stolen-bitcoin-tracing-service-and-bitcoin-data-recovery-high-profile-digital-forensic-services-company-sytech-embraces-bitcoin

Good place to start for sure.  Filing a police report would also provide some reassurance to people becoming convinced that this is a scam, to hold off the screams. Filing a false police report is a crime in most places, so filing a police report should make people take the "I am not a scammer" seriously.  Do we have a jurisdiction/police report number?

is the CL thread.

BTW: since coinlenders generates revenue, I won't accept anything less then my initial investment.

+1

All who are using CL should get at least initial investment back.
Maybe it will take a while to get the coins, since the people who took the loans might have a few weeks/months to repay.
But eventually all CL deposits should get refunded.

+1.

Just received most of what I had deposited on October 27th, the day after the hack was discovered.  It wasn't a lot of coin, but it was to me, and I salute TF's efforts.  Immediate responsiveness, contrasted with Roman/bitfloor.

As I have said in another thread, while I am angry at how this happened, I am not accusing TF of being a scammer.  I've always told my kids that making a mess is regrettable, but leaving it is really bad.  TF seems to be trying to clean up. I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, and I remain hopeful at this time that I won't lose the larger amount in Coinlenders.

... the insulting 12 year olds and their indisputable "Omg yuu musta stolenz da bitcoinez!" argument were starting to piss *me* off.  Can't imagine how TF feels.

What a terrible shame this is. Not just for TF, but for the whole community. Inputs was starting to take off as a viable new service; CL had become the de facto place to invest if Asicminer stock returns were underwhelming; we *all* lose when one of the Good Guys takes a hit like this.  Pissy little children might not grasp that "subtle" concept but I'm sure the rest of us do.  Just keep us in the loop, TF, and don't let the bastards get you down.

I am incredibly angry about how this went down. But do not confuse my anger with any accusation that TF is a scammer or a bad guy. I don't believe he is. He's responded to email and to many people here and I remain hopeful.

This is a huge blow for me.    At this point, I want to take the coin I have left and tuck it under the mattress, which does the economy no good.  But the risk just does not seem worth the reward right now.  If lots of other people feel this way, then the entire bitcoin economy takes a hit.

This wasn't just an attack on TF.  It was an attack on all of us.

indeed, if there were 4100 coins in the hot pocket, he should easily have 10k in cold storage.
That'd be great, but it's not the case. The majority of the coins were on the 'hot pocket' which was hacked Lips sealed.

Why did this change from a few days ago, when people were complaining about a too-small "hot pocket"?
The hack occurred on 2013-10-26.

and you just now noticed?
If you actually read about what has been going on instead of jumping to the "Post" button, the attack was detected in hours but it was only announced today as we investigated and explored our options.

And allowed people to continue to deposit, as I did??

...my guess is the CoinLenders people will feel the brunt of the loss.

THAT would anger me, as Coinlenders theoretically has assets loaned out, and eventually to be paid back. Some people may cut and run, but not everyone will, and he should have more than a few coin there now AND rolling in as people make their payments. Theoretically all of it.  Theoretically.  I keep saying that word.  I want to believe in honesty.
Yes, which is why it's much simpler to handle claims with Inputs and why it's being handled first.

Good to know, let´s hope for the best.

Indeed so.

I do not have anything to my bitcoin address yet, and still show a balance on inputs.io..  Will report in when something shows up.

Your btc address? If you have a balance on Inputs that's >1 BTC and have received an email, you should have received a refund already.

Bit over half a coin.  Had just increased my balance on Coinlenders, which is more.  You email did say proportional - please tell me that this carries to the smaller amounts as well, at least down to something like 0.1 BTC.  At these prices, half a coin is not dust.

Got a quick reply from inputs.io:

If you have had balance shown on Inputs.io, we're dividing up the coins we do have left based on a sliding scale, and have sent it to the specified address.

I hope his reputation is worth enough to him to at least make good on Coinlenders. Theoretically, the balances there are held by people who intend to repay their loans.  But I'm naturally nervous.  The timing of the fee rebate payments got strange recently:

I would add mcxNOW (https://mcxnow.com/exchange/MCX) as a decent trollbox to check out.  The site itself has blazing fast responsiveness.  No fiat - a bug or a feature, depending on your preference.

Maybe do the final withdrawal to the user's public withdrawal address if one is set, otherwise to the address of the last successful withdrawal?

That makes sense.  I will write the script so that it pulls that first, then falls back to the last successful withdrawal.

Makes perfect sense.

I, and probably others, have a few bit pennies left there, with some small dividends continuing to come in.  My thought is to leave them there post-shutdown for a final accounting, in the hopes that you will return these balances to our public addresses once all the dust (transaction volume) has settled.  Is this a good approach for finishing the wind-down for these small balances?

He is obviously gone with the wind. I am not far from his home base and I am going to try to get over to the address that is listed sometime soon. I will let everyone know what I see.

Thank you.

In the mean time, why does he not simply pay divs according to the spreadsheet he has from Burnsides?  It means no trading of shares themselves for a while, an inconvenience to shareholders for sure, but it would be an important signal that he is not simply cutting and running.

"Bump"

I'm about to retire old graphic cards.  I'm not going to farm-mine Scrypt, but it'd be nice to have a card mining when it's not being used.  Would the above July advice still be good advice here In October?
