Vega is shit for mining. Memory isn't quick enough to be in line with its price.

Great gamer card though, heavy shaders are going to love all that brute force.

Re: Molex Power Adapter for PCIE Riser

It depends on

a) the gauge of the wire
b) How much each card drains through the pci-e slot

First one is pretty easy, just look at whats written on the yellow wire going into your molex chain probably something like AWG 20 or AWG 18, then consult this chart: http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/wire-gauges-d_419.html (go by the gauge on your wire and look at the amps noted on single core). Multiply the number by 12 and you have the max amount of watts this wire was designed for.

Second one is tougher but you can assume the maximum any card will drain from the PCI-e slot is 75W since that's the max allowed in the specification.

If you're just gonna test it then most electrical wires are rated for up to 75C, as long as it stays under that at full load, its fine.

Re: Strange behavior from an older motherboard
by

Ok, figured it out. There's a really tiny (like literally) footnote in the motherboards manual that says the bottom 16x slot shares its bus with the 1x slots. If there is anything plugged into there then each PCI-e lane it uses shuts off one of the 1x slots.

Armed with this knowledge I could get 4 cards working in that motherboard. Maybe it could do 5 but I'm out of risers and really not in the mood to fuck around with it any further.

Strange behavior from an older motherboard
by

I've had 2 rx470's mining in my old 965P-DS4 for quite a while now. Since one of my other motherboards crapped out and is now in warranty, I needed to move its 580's into other rigs. This motherboard is acting strange though.

Basically, it has 5 pcie slots total - 2 of them are 16x and 3 of them are 1x. It has no problems with any video card/riser combo as long as I'm either using the 16x slots exclusively or the 1x slots exclusively, I can't use all of them at the same time. Essentially, as soon as anything is plugged into the 16x slots, the 1x slots stop identifying video cards.

I can plug other stuff in the 1x slots and have them identified, it had no problem running 2 video cards in 16x slots, a wifi card, usb 3.0 card and a sound card in the 1x slots at the same time.

When I switch it up and fill the 1x slots with video cards though, if there is anything in the 16x slots (not just video cards), it won't even boot.

Looking around the BIOS, the only thing associated with PCI-e is its frequency, I can overclock it but I left it on default. Also should mention that the board only supports PCI-e 1.0 and is running the latest bios update.

The type of risers I'm using are the externally powered USB ones, version 006S and are perfectly functional as far as I can tell. I'm testing with a corsair ax1200i so power isn't an issue either.

Anybody else experience something like this?

Re: Altcoins worth CPU mining?

no cpu can compete with gpu's in terms of cost efficiency but out of all of them, monero is the most fitting for CPU's since unlike zcash or eth algorithms, it heavily banks on a large on-chip cache which gpu's don't have.

Its already commencing. In the local craigslist equivalent, last week I saw 580's moving for 350-400ish, today they are asking for 300 and nobody is buying. This christmas is going to be like an oprah show "You get an rx480! You get an rx480! EVERYBODY GETS AN RX480!!"

Re: FPGA or GPU for altcoin mining
by
grape_tectonics
on 16/07/2017, 18:32:00 UTC
Faster per watt? certainly. Faster per the cost of the device? No way in hell.

Due to the more popular altcoin algorithms being heavily memory dependent, FPGA's have no real advantage. Sure they can crunch whatever little there is to calculate more efficiently but they still have to be hooked to a gpu style memory controller with regular ddr memory.

There are some exotic FPGA's with more advanced memory tech than DDR too but when it comes down to random read bandwidth per dollar, you just can't beat a modern GPU.

I did consider this actually. Its due to hit 3gb around April, that's why I was looking at either the 6gb 1060 or the 8gb 580, so yeah, looks like the 580 is the better option.

this guy thinks he can still afford the electricity costs with his mining profits more than 3 months from now  Cheesy Grin Cheesy Grin have you seen a difficulty chart lately?

The noobs will commit suicide.

No point in buying gpus at this point when profit is getting less and less and prices on gpus continue getting jacked up by manufacturers.

Its not the manufacturers that jacked up the prices, its the retailers figuring out how massive the demand is. Some of them were still selling rx 570's at sub €200 prices while the second hand auctions were already reaching €350, its only a few weeks ago that they finally adjusted their prices "appropriately".

Re: Have I killed my GTX 1060?

A sata cable  can do 75 watts.

nope, sata connectors are rated for 54W but how much they can actually do depends on the gauge of the wire they are connected to. 18 AWG is pretty common for more reputable brands, those cables can support 2 risers per cable. 20 AWG is pretty common for cheap PSUs, those can only do 1 per cable.

Also, unless you have an actual way to measure the power draw from the pci-e slot, you should always provision for at least 75W per each.

pools measure your current performance by frequency of accepted shares, this can easily swing by double digit percentages for small workers like yours. Check again some other time, maybe you'll see 20mh/s

also wtf are you doing mining on a gt 730??

You won't see any 470s in stock for at least 3 months, I guarantee it. With the massive video card shortage, all of them that are actually available are so overpriced that you won't even make ROI.

Re: PCI-E risers problem
by

It depends on what kinds of wires you got. Look at the PSU cables, find the AWG markings.

You should supply the extender with 75W so if the molex cables have

AWG 22 - 20, you can attach 1 molex -> 6pin per cable
AWG 19 - 18, you can attach 2 molex -> 6pin per cable
AWG 17 - 16, you can attach 3 molex -> 6pin per cable
AWG 15 for 4
AWG 14 for 5
etc.

Most good quality PSU's come with at least AWG 18 so on those, 1 molex cable can do 2x 6 pin adapters or a single 8 pin adapter.

Need I remind you guys that the R9 Fury cards using HBM get their asses kicked by the R9 390 in mining?  I'd say 40MH/s is perfectly in line with what you'd expect out of these.
