I'm interested in purchasing a largish number of shares (100's) if there's anyone who would prefer an off-market exchange to avoid slippage. PM me.

Re: Why bitcoin exploded in price

The pair of socks I'm wearing right now is pretty rare as they are one of a kind but that doesn't make them valuable.

No, what makes it valuable right now is the possibility that a lot of people in the future will desire it as a store of value.

This isn't even mentioning how bad of an idea deflationary currency is as an actual currency.

The market prefers commodities that are both scarce and durable to act as money, all else being equal. Bitcoin manifests these properties even more perfectly than gold. You can argue about the macro-economic effects, but in the end, it's what the market will choose if given the option.

Everywhere else there is a distinction between virtual currency and real currency. This line just says "currency".   It is quite vaque in that it could say "if the person accepts (Bitcoin) from one person and transmits it(Bitcoin) to another person as part of the acceptance and transfer of...value (that substitutes for currency)."  Would that mean that every node on the network transferring bitcoins from one person to another is an "exchanger and a money transmitter"?

I think if it just says "currency", they are referring to the FinCEN definition of currency, which excludes "virtual currency".

But the governments of the future, ohhhh, they're gonna LOVE IT, because using bitcoin will enable the people to love you (as you save them from this horrible state the planet is in).

I think you might be surprised how much political power the people who monetize government deficit spending have. Can you immagine a government that is restricted to actually taxing it's citizens to pay for wars and social programs? And not income withholding either... it will likely have to be funded entirely by taxation that doesn't involve self-reporting, like property and inventory tax.

I came across this blog post that explains how major exchanges set their fee schedules to promote liquidity:

Re: Campaign for XBT. A new ISO Currency Code is required for Bitcoin

Bitcoin is an unprecedented entity, that was made to disrupt the old currency system - to be non-conformist, rather than suck up to the establishment.

Yes, but it will happen much faster if users of national currencies can use the existing systems they are comfortable with to move value in and out of bitcoin. The name of the game right now is go mainstream as quickly as possible before they get their act together and realize what's happening.

The ECB already wrote that report promising "Further action from other authorities can reasonably be expected in the near future."

The one thing in bitcoin's favor right now is how quickly it's legitimate use is growing. Anything to hurry that along can only help.

I'm a mobile developer interested in working on a development project involving fellowtraveler's open transactions platform. I would like to post in the development forum in reply to a bounty he's offered. I registered on the forum today specifically for this purpose.
