Re: 1-2 years of Bear Market from now? (or much less?)
by

I think there are many similarities to the start of 2017 but 2018 brings something new, regulations. The SEC and their international counterparts are stepping up regulations and we're feeling the result. The bear market will continue until the shock is absorbed but more people will enter the market because of the stability. More business will be open to accept crypto as payment as a result of more regulation and stable prizes.

I'm holding coins that I think have a good long outlook (LTC, XRP, NANO and others). Hesitant of tokens...

I agree with this.

No bro not for years, this market will start recovering in weeks, next month will be good hopefully, do not panic and just believe in your investments.

I really hope this is true and as a consequence I am holding strong even though I am currently in a negative. I have 55% XRP, 20%XLM, ETH and NEO. These are all stable strong projects which I think will stand the crypto test of time. I am hoping for a bull market to return in the mid to late spring post G20 like it did in 2017.

I see BTC rangebound around 10,000usd. This stability will help the alt coin market gain value and grow as to be expected.

Re: Bitcoin price manipulation patterns
by

There`s no single manipulator, who is rich and powerfull enough to push the prices down.
There should be a group of big crypto whales and they sell together, forcing the price to go down. When the prices go down, all the small traders start to follow the trend, and eventually the market is manipulated.
Slow and steady decline means small panic.Fast and rapid price crash means big panic. Both scenarios can be created by manipulators.
What do you mean by "artificially bring the prices down to cause panic selling"?

I wouldn't call this decline slow, slow is over weeks but not like today and yesterday. If it wasn't a single manipulator or big whale cashing out, why are the prices going down in this manner? It looks like someone intentionally and deliberately keeps the rate constant to bring it to a point when people think it's over and freak out mindlessly selling their coins. That's what I mean by artificially bringing the prices down to instigate an avalanche-like panic selling. When the prices start crashing on their own.
You think this decline started happening two days ago ?
You need to take a look at the 1 day chart and start counting the candles from when it started showing red, may be you will understand that this started a long time ago.

Just like the OP said, it is always a gradual process, they are whales, they know what they are doing, they come together and then play with emotions of traders to make a pretty good gain from it. Unfortunately, we have a lot of weak hands and traders in crypto, so that makes it even better for them.

I'm the OP, lol. Truth be told, I've been following the price for pretty long. Should I say that I'm kinda day-trader? It was a gradual process which brought the prices down so much without even a chance of a slightest pullback. This was the most frightening thing in the whole business. Believe me I can tell the difference between someone steadily pressing prices down and organic decline or even organic crash, where you can catch pullbacks and reversals every now and then. It was like a smart trader slowly but surely closing a huge position.

At last! Someone can see what I see - thank god for this thread. Does anyone else see the organic growth stop around $6k on the way up? May be $6k IS the organic floor? Another point. is it feasible for people/institutions with very deep pockets to start buying as much BTC as possible thus driving the price up prior to Christmas only to then sell en masse, bringing the price down, ensuring futures contracts execute and keeping the BTC price within a certain range? Or is this too simplistic?

I had a smooth transaction in HitBTC, before (late December as I remember). However, these past few weeks more and more issues are popping out on all exchanges (probably not only them). Both HitBTC and Bittrex are having several problems.

May I know what email provider are you using? Also, could you provide a screenshot of that 'the linked image cannot be displayed'?

Hi Felipe,

I am using Outlook mail provider. Here is a screenshot of the email: I have also just sent a test 0.01 ETH to Kraken which resulted in an identical email from Hit. I have about $11k on their exchange. I am loathe to transfer it if they are having issues.

When I withdraw less than 0.5btc on hitbtc, it takes 2-10 days
When more, 30min-12 hours

That's interesting. May be it will show up in a couple of days then? However in the reports section their is no evidence of the transaction having taken place which is worrying.

Well said Harizen - they are taking a pummelling on Twitter.

I fear my BTC are gone. Immediately after the withdrawal I received an email from HitBTC support asking to click on the confirmation link to authorise the withdrawal. When I go back to this email from support@hitbtc.com I cannot access it as 'the linked image cannot be displayed' .. which stinks of scam to me. What do you think?

Has anyone been a victim of scamming through HitBTC.

Just looking at their Twitter feed recently and you can see a lot of people have been scammed...

https://twitter.com/hitbtc

I personally sent 0.08 BTC from Hit to my Bittrex account. It has so far failed to turn up and it is not showing as a transaction on my Hit account. I am beginning to fear the worst....

Hi guys,

I am looking for some feedback on my portfolio diversification. It currently stands as:

33.7%     XLM
25.38%   ETH
14.77%   WTC
10.30%   XRP

The remaining 15% or so is made up of around 20 alts including:

MANA
BQX
SNT
SC
OMG
ARDR
BNT
SUB
COSS
VOISE
ENJ
BTC
ADX
BAT
ADA
STEEM
DGB
XMY
VOX
TRX
RDD
VIB
XVG

Right now I'm happy consolidating into the 4 major projects I have above with the remaining spread across other alts. I'm still just over 100% up from my original May 2017 investment (although I should be at least 5 x this! - hindsight eh?). Am I missing anything? Am I being too cautious? Until the market settles and we see a bullish return I am happy reducing my risks hence my portfolio diversification.

Your thoughts are appreciated,

Mark

Thanks for all your responses - that's very helpful.
Has anyone given up work to trade full time? Do you think that's possible? I think I could get by on $2000 a month.

Not bad although too much weight in BTC for decent profits IMO. V similar to mine.
What are your profit taking strategies?

It looks good - well done. The only thing I would suggest though is maybe widen the gap between the 24H winners coin and percentage gain - I feel they are too close together.

Exit / Cash out strategies
by
harri74
on 28/01/2018, 16:24:20 UTC
Hi folks,

What do you use as your cash out / take profit strategy? Do you even have a strategy for taking profits?

I have been trading for the last 6 months and more than once I have been in a position, which in hindsight, where I should have 'cashed out' a significant portion of my portfolio, but I haven't.

The obvious strategy is to take out your original stake and just 'play' with house money after that. I also read that if you double your investment in a coin then sell half which seems quite obvious. However, I have a long term vision in place (mortgage/house purchase) which makes me more inclined to leave the majority of my portfolio exposed to the market. I use Blockfolio app which makes it easier to track my investments and until recently I was just skimming the profit off successful coins and reinvesting in sleeping giants. This strategy was working well until the price of BTC nosedived by around 50% 3 weeks ago which makes me think a regular profit taking Into FIAT strategy would be far more effective.

I plan to ride the alt train for as long as possible. I follow the market daily which makes me confident to hold fast through the hard times but I feel having some kind of profit road map is a good thing.

Thanks for your input.

I think this is still the very early stages for the majority of the Altcoin projects we are reading about. I expect BTC and ETH prices to stabilise (maybe around the current prices) and will be traded but I see more and more investment coming in to the altcoin sphere. Things will change sure but I expect the altcoin market to be healthy for the next 3-5 years.

Re: CME futures expires on 26th January
by
harri74
on 27/01/2018, 12:31:28 UTC
So, after all, nothing happened? Or market just slow reacting?

Probably not. Market manipulation is harder than it sounds. CME limits what an entity/group/person can hold, which makes it almost unprofitable given the cost of manipulation.

On the other hand, this futures expiration dip is more of a fud than an actual event. Price fluctuates too much not because of actual manipulation, but because people expects and are afraid of that manipulation.

See, nothing happened. As Maveth says, CME on its own cannot really do much, so this was nothing much to do with futures in the first place. As people keep reminding anyway, none of the contracts actually involve Bitcoin. It is just a bunch of people betting on whether the price goes up or down.

As yes, the actual event does not cause price fluctuations, rather people react in anticipation of news, and events. They either panic and sell out of fear and uncertainty, or buy in the fear of missing out, this is the herd mentality famous in trading.

The way I see it is that the inflating price of BTC we witnessed towards the end of November and throughout December could have been big business/governments buying up lots of BTC. Then in order to manipulate the price downwards to ensure the Futures contracts executed successfully, many of these BTC are sold. This would explain the fact that $50bn falls off the market in less than 1 hour around a week ago...

Thank you for all your input people - brilliant. Thank you.
Personally, I don't see it having that much of an impact other than keeping the bitcoin price within a range of 10-12k usd (right now) which is good for the rest of the eco system as a whole.

Re: 2 Hour Left....How you guys think about CME Bitcoin going to expiry?
by
harri74
on 26/01/2018, 14:08:46 UTC
Not sure tbh. The optimist in me would like to see a surge of capital back into the market taking the overall market cap back to above 80 million with the corresponding flow through to the alts. The pessimist in me sees bitcoin range bound between 10-12k usd. How feasible would it be to manipulate short and then long future contracts? I suppose anything is possible? However, when I think about regulation it may not necessarily be a bad thing for the market as a stable bitcoin price could/should attract more capital to the altcoin ecosystem..
