Re: When do we know bitcoin is safe? Segwit

Don't panic, but your Bitcoins may just vanish into the ether next month
Well, actually, do panic. A pending code change could bring a period of instability
The community-driven organization overseeing Bitcoin on Wednesday warned that any Bitcoins received after Monday, July 31, 2017 at GMT-0700 may vanish into thin air or be rejected as invalid.

Bitcoin.org said that at the end of the month, Bitcoin confirmation scores – a number that represents the difficulty of altering the associated transaction – may become unreliable for an unknown period.

"This means that any Bitcoins you receive after that time may later disappear from your wallet or be a type of Bitcoin that other people will not accept as payment," the group said.

The reason for this "potential network disruption" is Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 148 (BIP 148), which describes a "user-activated soft fork" (UASF). It's an effort to implement a code revision referred to as a Segregated Witness, or SegWit, a method for separating signature data from transaction identifier data in a Bitcoin transaction.

Doing so offers a number of ostensible benefits, including increasing the Bitcoin blocksize, limiting the extent to which transaction data can be modified by third parties, and simplifying scripting upgrades.

The SegWit operation depends on the consensus of Bitcoin miners. If a majority of the Bitcoin miners signal their support through their mining activity, the change should become active across all compatible Bitcoin clients.

But if BIP 148 is only embraced by a minority, the blockchain could split. That would create a situation where BIP 148 Bitcoins and legacy Bitcoins would be incompatible.

Not really looking like dying any time soon

People focus so much on what the price of bitcoin is that they don't look at *how* bitcoin is traded.  Bitcoin is quite interesting because it is the first asset whose trading/exchange infrastructure was created from a clean sheet, and so you have things like 24/7 trading, multiple exchanges, and direct trading with counterparties, that are going to eventually be used to trade everything else.

It's not just bitcoin.  The issue is that the global banking and payments system is fundamentally broken.  Bitcoin is merely one part of general set of financial technologies that will reshape the banking system.

Bitcoin nears record high price after 'milestone'

Bitcoin nears record high price after 'milestone' in fierce debate over its future
The price of bitcoin traded near its all-time high.
A key milestone in the so-called "scaling debate" which has been consuming the bitcoin community was reached.
But some in the bitcoin space said there are more hurdles to jump over yet.

What's been going on?

Within the bitcoin community, a so-called "scaling debate" has been going on. There is a big backlog of transactions on the bitcoin blockchain — the technology that underpins the cryptocurrency. That's because the bitcoin code only allows a certain number of transactions through in one "block".

What next?

The new code update called BIP 91 has been locked in with 93.8 percent of miners showing support for the proposal in the last 24 hours, according to Coin Dance, a site which tracks bitcoin blocks.

It is essentially a software update that miners need to run. So 93.8 percent of miners are signaling their intention to run it.

There will now be a two-day grace period for miners to prepare for the activation of BIP 91. Following that, there will be an adjustment period which could take two weeks. The actual increase of the block size might not take place until November.

And there could be some potential issues. For example, one bitcoin developer Bryan Bishop, said that miners might not upgrade their software, even though they are signaling that they will.

It is rising is just saw the price it is at 2770$ and i don't understand the reason why is the price increasing so fast suddenly. 2 days back it was at 1800$ and now it is at 2800$ why did you even sell your bitcoin if yoh would have waited you could have easily made 1000$ per bitcoin in just 2 days which you won't get anywhere in the world

yes it is being said that it will rise to 3000$ btc  , what will happen after 1st august?? it so confusing to me

I think you sold it under the panic selling wave pressure and yes, I can understand that it is difficult to sustain in such conditions especially in the early days of investing. Since price is started to rise now, I am sure you must have learned a lesson from this incident and it will help you every time in the future during such fluctuations in the price. In such kind of market conditions, I would say go with buy orders but will lesser units and higher frequencies so that it will be cost averaging for the period. (I might be completely wrong, please do your own research before investment).

yes i bought at 2300$ btc rate and still i got much profit
