#10 This week in Elrond - Report from AdrianDobrita - ELROND team member





It's the end of the week and as usual here is the weekly tech update Elrond #BUIDLs


1. New EVM compatible WASM VM is integrated in Elrond protocol and has been tested with several smart contracts, providing promising preliminary results.
2. Expanded the documentation with information related to the VM, you can check the work in progress here:
3. Block and transaction rewards have been tested, validators and block proposers now get their rewards for the produced blocks and included transactions. This covers the first part of our economic proposal article.
4. Smart contract results & block and transaction rewards are indexed in the elastic search and visible on the blockchain explorer.
5. Validator statistics engine finalized, providing nodes consensus participation information. This data is now cross checked between shards and metachain.
6. First working version of the transaction generation binary has been tested. We can now stress our testnet with a high number of transactions between multiple randomly generated accounts, distributed on all shards.
7. http://Cryptobubbles.io testnet and game upgrade after processing 10 mil smart-contract calls.
8. Optimization of node synchronization mechanism in progress, integration tests with different scenarios are being developed to target the synchronization mechanism.
9. Improved filtering of transactions is in progress and will optimize the node memory, CPU usage and network traffic.
10. Automated testing processes are in place, monitoring & automated bug reporting have been configured for internal testnets.
11. Integration tests added for BLS multi signing and p2p integration tests refactored.
12. Several bugs affecting memory consumption and other bugs have been fixed improving the testnet stability.

#9 This week in Elrond
The last week of summer is almost over, but ERD team are still working hard.  Read the thread below for the weekly tech update Elrond #BUIDLs


1. Improved bootstrap from storage and syncing mechanisms in order to eliminate attacks when syncing from malicious nodes or when the database is corrupt.
2. Added security checks in order to prevent smart contracts to modify maliciously the balance or the state of an account into the protocol layer. Gas will be consumed, but the output will be disregarded.
3. Using the metachain peer processor, synchronizing the dynamic validator's data on the shard level. All of the nodes will now have the same view of all the validators' rating, their participation and their contribution to the consensus.
4. New transaction generation binary and improvements made to the node for receiving, validating and propagating transactions in the network.
5. Improvements for the termui console: added new metrics: an estimation of the time required for synchronization, number of transactions processed, etc.
6. Improved error handling on serial level DB: non-blocking. Fixed error that would put reading and writing from/to storage on an infinite loop.
7. Top-down analysis of the Elrond node and insights are being crystallized in the form of a comprehensive document.
8. General bugfixing and stabilization.

I’ll let Beniamin kick things off with a quick personal introduction before giving us some background on the project before we open things up for Q&A.

Thrilled to have Elrond listed on Bitmax and sharing more info with all of you.
Here’s a brief version of how it all started.
I stumbled into bitcoin sometime in 2013 and joined the NEM core team in 2014 to lead product, marketing, and community, helping take the project from a Bitcointalk post to a global billion dollar product. I have co-founded Metachain Capital to invest in ambitious founders solving critical blockchain problems and also started ICO Market Data with my brother to streamline investment expertise.
As it became clear that scalability was perhaps the most pressing problem in the blockchain space, I saw no one was really solving it properly and had a clear intuition on how a really compelling solution would look, but needed to test it against the brightest technical minds I knew and see what I was missing.
So, together with my brother we gathered some of our smartest technical friends, and had several in-depth discussions about this. The discussions continued for about a 1.5 months, when it became clear we had a really significant breakthrough. This is how Elrond began, and the point when we started working on formalizing the first fully state sharded proof of stake architecture.
The rest, as they say, is history 🙂
To clarify: Elrond is a new blockchain architecture, designed from scratch to bring a 1000x cumulative improvement in throughput and execution speed. To achieve this, Elrond introduces two key innovations: a novel Adaptive State Sharding mechanism, and a Secure Proof of Stake (PoS) algorithm, enabling linear scalability with a fast, efficient, and secure consensus mechanism. Thus, Elrond can process upwards of 10,000 transactions per second (TPS), with 5-second latency, and negligible cost, attempting to become the backbone of a permissionless, borderless, globally accessible internet economy.
We have built Elrond with great team of experienced entrepreneurs along with 13 engineers and researchers with significant blockchain backgrounds and technical experience at Microsoft, Google, Intel, and NTT DATA. The team includes two PhDs in CS & AI, multiple math, CS, and AI Olympiad champions, and a former member of the NEM core team.
We’ve come a long way since Oct 2017, and the future of Elrond looks more promising then ever before.

#8 This week in Elrond : Read the thread below for the weekly tech update


1. -> WASM integration into Elrond protocol is almost ready, ~90%. We choose to use ewasm / hera as the base and changed the whole implementation and logic of linking the actual engine to the protocol.
2. The next things are defining and limiting non-deterministic behaviour of WASM linking crypto hooks into the Engine, as we want to get rid of sentinel contract. Further steps is to create libraries for smart contract developers to use and deploy them.
3. -> Optimization for our formally verified VM with GO backend never stops: improvements on collections, especially maps.
-> Heartbeat improvements: checking the validity/integrity of the information about the node - ShardID
4. -> Completely refactored of the interceptors component. Interceptors do the hard work of prevalidating any data coming from the network. They unmarshal the data, verify the integrity and validity of all data fields, caches and validating the data.
5. -> As we work mostly with interfaces and go's nil check does not verify if the underlying object is nil, it may have adverse effects such as nil pointer exception. All nil check on the protocol got updated with interface nil checks as well.
6. -> Transactions generator binary: working on a new binary which will generate transactions used for stress-testing on the testnet. It will send a given number of intra-shard or cross-shard transactions to the network, optimising the test transactions generation from the node.
7. -> We finally have a peer processor which writes into the peer state trie, it updates data such as uptime, rating, number of signed and missed blocks and so forth.
8. Metachain gathers all the peer data through the shard headers and updates the trie. As all the nodes process the meta-headers they also update their peer state. So all the peers have the same global view of how the others behave.
9. -> Handling of summing all the transaction fees and creating special transactions to the leader, to a burn address and to the community is finished. Implementing rewards is in the final meters, in the weekend will be finished.
10. -> Validator Dashboard improvement on termui console, added new metric for block info and change CPU load and Memory load to display how many CPU and Memory node use.

ElrondNetwork’s short summary progress made this week - Read the thread HERE for the weekly tech update


1. Released feature-rich testnet v1.0.12 with a redesigned ui and validator monitoring. Verifying your nodes is easier, all the data rendered into a simple UI.
2. Reworking the scripts for starting a node, one-click deployment, bringing all the tools, building and running them. There is no more need to start a CLI.
3. Improved gas limit and consumption calculation for miniblocks. Creating batches of miniblocks with predefined gas limit, in order to be sure that it is executable in a given time in the destination shard.
4. Heartbeat gets new data to be shared, this tool helps to send and receive messages about your connected peers and their statistics.
5. New validator page, now you can see who is on and synchronized from the validators on the testnet. This is the frontend for heartbeat. Keep your validator in the green.
6. Started integrating the new VM to run WASM. Multiple languages can be compiled into it, ran with JIT/AOT compilers, a number of great developer tools are already available and it is super fast.
7. We propose to support multiple engines in the back: WABT, Bynarien, WAVM, Google V8. As always, it is not enough for us to copy existing technologies, we want to improve them.
8. Launched http://cryptobubbles.io. First dApp in a truly sharded architecture. Written in IELE, running on a formally verified VM, k framework with go backend.

9. IELE VM got another set of improvements, when it comes to memory handling and rule matching. It is getting faster every day.
10. One more step for K Finality in shards. As a group of bad actors can drive some part of the shard into an invalid fork, that group will be desynchronized from the netwrok. The solution is to revert back to the final shardblock notarized by metachain.
11. Activated nonce check for each type of transaction
12. In our stress tests we found and interesting bug: the consensus and processing was so fast that 2 consecutive blocks were created in the same round.
     Metachain subsequently stopped notarizing the shardblocks becuase of invalidity.
     Added more security checks on any block.
13. Detailed documentation and specification of the Elrond node. It started as an internal description of the components, but it will become our open cookbook.
14. Elrond HQ validators meeting was a great success, many enthusiasts to become validators in the Elrond protocol. Discussed the further steps in terms of automatizing the administration of the node.

  How This Company Is Pushing The Limits Of Blockchain Technology To Achieve Scalability


Momentum is gaining among blockchain proponents that the next generation of applications, free from the centralized data monopoly of big tech, is just over the horizon. At the core of the race towards more scalable, decentralized applications (dApps) is the hope that recent advances in the underlying technology, ranging from sharding to proof-of-stake, can provide the type of infrastructure that these dApps need to become widely adopted.

 One of the platforms pushing the envelope in the underlying technology is Elrond, a high-value transfer network that relies on secure proof-of-stake consensus and a bleeding-edge integration of sharding with a public blockchain.

Sharding is an ambitious take on scaling public blockchains at the convergence of decades-old technology for horizontal database partitioning and decentralized networks. Elrond has made some significant headway producing a working sharding implementation, and already has a testnet live with an early version of their platform.

I had a chance to speak with Beniamin Mincu, CEO of Elrond, on the progress and future direction of the technology, along with its potential industry-wide implications.

Joresa Blount: Can you give a high-level overview of the technology (i.e., sharding & proof-of-stake) that underpins your network?

Beniamin Mincu:  Elrond is a new blockchain architecture, designed from scratch to bring a 1000-fold cumulative improvement in throughput and execution speed. To achieve this, Elrond introduces two key innovations: a novel adaptive state sharding mechanism and a secure proof-of-stake (sPoS) algorithm.

The key insight with sharding is that you can partition the network into smaller networks to enable parallel transaction processing. Once you can do that, a new performance paradigm opens up. There are 3 levels of sharding, each posing a more difficult challenge that needs to be solved: transaction sharding (level 1), network sharding (level 2), and state sharding (level 3). After more than one and a half years of work, Elrond has validated the technical model proposed in its technical paper, and has come with a practical solution to the most difficult of the problems that can radically increase performance.

The adaptivity of our sharding model means that unlike other networks, in Elrond, as more nodes join, the network can expand and contract in real-time. In other words, as more nodes join the network to reap validator rewards, new shards are formed based on a clever binary tree model, and scalability increases even further.

The second key innovation in Elrond is its secure proof-of-stake algorithm. Elrond has attempted to depart from the energy-intensive and unsustainable proof-of-work and come up with a solution compatible with a globally scalable architecture. Thus, we employ proof-of-stake to significantly improve energy efficiency and prevent Sybil attacks, random sampling of the consensus group to make it very secure, unpredictable and use of a PBFT consensus variation for breakneck execution speed.

The implication of these improvements is hard to overstate, and businesses are starting to pay attention because, for them, they make all the difference.

Summary
To sum up, Elrond looks like a very promising project. It has a working (in a testing environment) solution for scalability problems, and that could really disrupt the market if the same result will be seen on the mainnet. Unlike most of its competitors Elrond supports a lot of programming languages, the smart contract languages are formally defined in K Framework, it is possible to perform formal verification of smart contracts written in these languages.
Elrond is a kind of “all-rounder” type of project, it can be considered Layer 1, Layer 2, and Interoperability project. It is both a strength and weakness: Elrond has a lot of potential use-cases and can choose it’s focus further down the line, but at the same time there is a risk of becoming “Jack of all trades, master of none”.
Elrond has a lot of competitors and they have been in the game for a longer time, so Elrond will have to act quickly and try to launch a marketing campaign that will be able to attract anchor clients and core users. Right now it is hard to compete with Elrond tech-wise, but their next challenge and opportunity will focus on how they will attract users and developers.

Elrond marks Ethereum (2.0), Zilliqa, Dfinity, Algorand, Harmony, Quarkchain and Multivac as their competitors and they have written a detailed comparison to each of the aforementioned companies.
If I were to outline the main differences between those companies and Elrond they would be as follows:
    1- Consensus mechanism — SPoS, this novel consensus is much more efficient than PoS or HPoW;
    2- Sharding — not all of the competitors even use sharding, but those who use lack wholesome approach, Elrond’s adaptive state sharding is the state of the art;
    3- Cross-shard operations — there is a larger overhead in communication compared to the Elrond architecture;
    4- The finality of the cross-shard transactions is much shorter in Elrond.
