Can anyone point me to a site that sell decent looking rigs? I need a rack to house 4 cards each. Everywhere I look they are either made out of wood or god knows what. THanks

Mining is only dead for those whose electrical costs are high enough to actually strip out any profit given the coin they are on.

Mining may be dead for one person, but not at all for another.  Blanket statements like 'mining is dead' are made by newbies who are simply new to the profitability cycle of virtual currency and who likely came in merely for a quick speculative buck based on something they read or where told.  These same newbies always make the mistake of thinking that their ROI will be a linear constant.  It almost never is.  It could be sped up in impressive fashion (re: latest altcoin explosion over the winter), or sit back and plod along like stuff is now.

In short, you either give yourself the necessary time to potentially break even in the least - or simply don't even get involved in the first place.

Remember, the lazy person always starves - the same is true for altcoin mining. If you don't work at it, you will starve too.  The profitability landscape is always shifting: one must adapt to the shifts.  Nothing ever dies.

Silly post.

Lets say you invest $20k into mining with GPU's for Alt's, you simply CANNOT make your money back mining, PERIOD, THE END! How hard is that to understand? You are commenting about people making money now? I think youre confused. The only people making money are those who started in 2011. Their mining operation paid for all of their expenses by now. If you are just starting now, or even a few months back, you will NOT be able to break even. You are either confused or way too optimistic, which in this case is a lost cause. Bottom line is that people who started mining 2 months ago and going forward will not break even, even if bitcoin price goes up.
Alts were tanking when Bitcoin was at $660, which is about a month and a half ago, they only follow it to a certain degree. Litecoin has been the most stable at around $25. Alt's are simply pump and dump. No one excepts them as a viable currency like bitcoin, and majority are premined and then sold when the value goes up.
If you are in it for the hobby then by all means.

I sold all 20mhash systems I had before everyone flooded the market with their gear.

Mining is dead, it's a fact. As others already pointed out you will still make money but you won't break even, ever. Because by the time you think you will break even the difficulty will go up and new miners will flood the market. Bottom line is this, the ROI is bad. You are better off trading currency as a day trader vs investing money into mining

keep dreaming. with a limited supply of only 20 mil it will likely take decades, if it survives that long.

eventually the banks will come up with their own universal form of payment, its just a matter of time.

I just invested in 30 290x mining farm and just got them up and running couple of weeks ago.  I now feel that it's too late and that I should have known and invested in Gridseed instead.  Now I'm wondering if should take the loss by selling by GPU rigs now to convert to ASIC farm, gridseed in particular, but the one major speculation I'm hoping for is that GPU mining will continue to be profitable because of nscrypt.  Then again maybe nscrypt will eventually work on these asics...

GPUs will always be useful because coin creators will just adopt different algos for which there are no ASICs yet.
That is simply an opinion.

I think if too many asics start to mine, people would just switch to asic-resistant currencies with different algorithms like vertcoin or something with scrypt-jane, wouldn't they?

That is a very real possibility, yes.  It is uncertain how profitability will fare on those currencies though regardless of being ASIC resistant.

I'm in a similar situation. I'm hoping Scrypt-Adaptive N factor and Scrypt-Jane coins keep the GPU farm busy. That being said, I'm only getting gridseeds from now on to increase my hash rate.
You guys are putting too much into an empty word "hope". Hope will cost you everything you invested into your cards, which will be a huge loss. You have to look into the current coins to see how they perform.

I put money into 16.5 Mhash two and half months ago, and am selling most of my gear now. 3-4 months ago the profits were good, you were practically guaranteed at least .1200 per Mhash. Now you are lucky if you get anything above .0058. I have sold most of my gear now at a slight loss which doesn't bother me. I came to a realization that I should have played the arbitrage game, which would have made me WAY WAY more than what mining could have ever brought in. I sadly couldnt do that because it took so long for BitStamp to approve me...very slow process. The only people that are benefiting are those that began mining years ago, which by now have paid for all of their hardware and made money. Also people that pay very little for electricity, especially in colder climates which dont have to use AC to cool down their hardware.

ASICs are coming guys, I didnt want to accept it myself. They are pricey however, but sure do save on power. Problem is, is that a solid ASIC unit thats in development that does 9-30Mhash is costing almost the same amount in video cards. It will still take you a long time to break even, even if you are paying less for electric.

So guys, when is this going to be as profitable as mining litecoin directly? its very close isn't it? When that happens is it even worth mining at multipools?
Answer is no. While many coins are popping up that may seem profitable, it's only for a short period until people sell them all off and drive the value down.

Come on comeonalready... I didn;t know you to be such a doomsday announcer... If I had a penny for all the bad predictions I heard over the years  I would crawl under my rock and be a filthy rich lizzard.

I've been mining since late 2012. I've mined for nothing, I broke 14 GPU's, I've mined at a loss, I've mined with great profits and every time ppl kept saying how the end of the cryptoworld is near and we should all quit. For some, THIS is not a game. If you want to gain enough then you have to stick with the plan and do your homeworks. The market is flooded with Sunday miners and ppl who just want to get rich fast without even understanding what the hell they are doing. They will be the first to go and unfortunately because of all the hype and late jumpers, altcoins with never recover but what the hell, we keep on mining. And as I said before many times, ASICS will not scare hardcore miners, we'll just have to find something else to play with our rigs.

Bottom line is, this is not and will not be the end of GPU rigs. But if you feel like selling then I'm definitely buying.

I agree with you, cryptoworld ends when miners leave it, until then there will be always something to mine with gpu. If it wasn't, we would make one !

For now, please take a look at Vertcoin (VTC) for mining with your rigs.
An influx of miners will only raise the sale of coins which will drive down price and difficulty, which in itself a big negative. It wont die, which is good for the currency itself, but the miner will no longer make money.

I truly wish everyone luck with mining. Rates on coins and profitability are coming down like world trade. The investment into hardware is no longer justified based on the returns, especially with summer around the corner which requires MUCH more electricity for cooling. Seems those who pay the least for their electric will benefit. Especially when you consider the influx of miners that are taking advantage of lower prices on hardware (recently they have been discounted), the more people mine the quicker coins go down the tubes. I now realize that I could have made WAY more in arbitrage vs. putting money into mining directly.
Sorry to discourage anyone. Good luck.
