I like your widget but it has recently stopped working. Can you please take a look at it?

It's happening again. About a week without updating. Tried reinstalling, cmd+r, nothing. Please take a look at it if you can. Really useful tool! cheers

Saludos, Forsythe

-f is for priority processing, the lower it is -f 0 the higher the priority, so -f 60 is not very concentrated processing. If you have a dedicated cpu for mining, then you would set -f 0 or 1 or 2, if you use your pc for other things as well, you might want to try -f 60 or above

I don't personally use diablo miner, but that's what -f does in the other miners

good luck!

Re: Building a 6990 Rig - Operating System
by

Just to add some of my small experience with the 6990's using Windows, I set the clocks 920/840 and get just under 400 MH/s per core(just under 800MH/s per card) with fans set at a constant 90% the GPUs get around 70-75c except for GPU2 which is at 81c. I noticed when going lower with mem clock it actually gains heat (1-2 degree's). Also these is a switch near the crossfire port that will turn stock 830/1250 into 880/1250, I used afterburner to get the 920/840. Also something to think about is that you can not under clock memory less than 100mhz of core clocks(you can visually do it but the effectivness is zero and will reset your mem clock back 1250, at least in linux anyway). I did get over 405 MH/s by setting the clocks to 940/840 but didn't want the extra heat or didn't want to increase fan speeds above 90%. The temps are stable and barely move. I used Phoenix Riser with "vectors" "13 aggression" and use the "BFI_INT" as extra flags. I still need to tinker around with the fan speeds to see what effect it has when lowering them, but im happy with 2 x 6990's(I use to have 3 but got too hot under linux) which produces just under 1600 MH/s

Hey dude, nice workaround, I'm having trouble with my 3x6990's temperatures. I have one question, you mention that underclocking more than 100mhz of core clocks will default to 1250, so how did you manage to get to 840 in linux? or did you end up using windows and afterburner for good? thanks!

you can use atioverdrivectrl in ubuntu to set your 6990 clock to 1000,150. you get 850 Mhash/s

Hi Darkpandora,

Can you share with us how you managed to change the memory clock speeds in your 6990? I'm currently stuck at 1250 and nothing I do seems to untangle it. Please help if you can, thanks!

Re: 6990 trouble (linux) lowering memory speed with AMDOverdriveCtrl/BIOS flashing

You can only lower the memory to 125mhz below the core on 69xx

thanks, so I can move 1250Mhz to 1125Mhz in the GUI of AMDOverdriveCtrl and then run the -b profile in terminal, then use aticonfig to set to gpu speed, 1125Mhz? How significant is this reduction overall for temperature? Does this limitation also exist in Windows?

May I ask what is the ideal voltage for low mid high profiles in AMDOverdriveCtrl?

Many thanks again for any help!

6990 trouble (linux) lowering memory speed with AMDOverdriveCtrl/BIOS flashing
by

on 21/06/2011, 20:06:47 UTC
Hi,

I'm having a hard time using AMDOverdriveCtrl to achieve results for lowering memory speed. My setup has 3x6990's and I can basically use only the middle card's 2 GPU's because the other two will have crazy hot temperatures.

AMDOverdriveCtrl modifications don't stick and may show as current peaks, but current clocks remain exactly the same. I load the profile for each according to their -h index number. The ranges are lowered and set via aticonfig command, but it doesn't work. Am I missing something here?

In many topics it is suggested that BIOS flashing could be the answer, but can't really find anybody with successful conclusive experience doing that with 6990. I'd appreciate a hint to a guide if there was any.

Is there a solution in linux for my dilemma or should I move to Windows 7 and stick to x6990 (4GPU) setup and find another system for my third 6990?

Your feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Forsythe

Re: How to install AMDOverdriveCtrl on Ubuntu via remote SSH?
by

Thanks Rob, I got confused because my logic tells me that if there's a 1.20 good for download, it's probable that there's also a .deb package awaiting, but I forget how linux world depends on lots of collaborations and one shouldn't take things for granted. Cheers.

Did you get it installed?

1.2.1 is now out as a Debian package:  http://sourceforge.net/projects/amdovdrvctrl/files/deb%20binaries/

I was able to install it with:

Code:
$ sudo dpkg -i amdoverdrivectrl_1.2.1_amd64.deb
$ sudo apt-get -f install

Ignore the errors you'll see from the first command, just run the second.

Thanks RobP, I'll try it tonight. Can this version address the issue of mem speed tweaking for 6990 cards? That's the only problem I seem to be having. The sheer temperature it runs at doesn't allow me to use the top and bottom cards. I've read repeatedly that running memory at lower speeds (300 instead of default 1250) can significantly reduce the heat and V consumption as well. The room's lighting starts flickering when a 4th GPU starts to run, so I'm running only three now.

Should I just go to Windows 7 and use 2x6990 and move the third one to a new system?

I've also read about Bios flashing, but I'm not too sure if this will work for 6990 and/or the most recommended method.

I appreciate any help provided.

It is not possible to do any meaningful mining with CPUs, that's why most good performance video cards from AMD are out of stock. Not even nVidia seem to have what it takes in this bitcoin world. I suggest you read all those boring, but informative new guides to get a hang of it.

Here's a link to a page with some mining calculators which you might find useful. Good luck.

Re: How to install AMDOverdriveCtrl on Ubuntu via remote SSH?

@SomeoneWeird - Yes, I managed to install it. I have this system with Three ATI 6990s, Approximately 2.1 Ghash/s https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_rig, the only difference is the motherboard where I got a Crosshair IV Formula (Asus) instead, same brand as the 3x6990.
My system is Ubuntu 11.04 64 bit and I followed the great guide found elsewhere in this forum.

The problem I'm getting is with underclocking, because from the three cards, only GPUs from the middle card remain at workable temperatures (below 85 C) The top and bottom card jump above 100 C in matter of seconds and quickly enough, the system freezes. I'm trying to control it via SSH, because I'm in another country.

After installing AMDOverdriveCtrl, I had my buddy run the utility GUI and the settings we set for low - med - high are all identical, that is GPU 850Mhz, MEM 300 Mhz.

Via SSH, I run the AMDOverdrive -b -i 0 xxx.ovdr and it runs correctly, so I do the same for the other 5 devices as well.

After that, I check aticonfig --odgc --adapter=all and it shows me the Current Peaks I had in the xxx.ovdr profile, the configurable peak range is also correct, but the current clocks are beyond the 300 Mhz and state 1250 Mhz.

So I turn aticonfig --od on and aticonfig --od-setclocks=830,300 --adapter=all and it does chance the Current Peak for all, but Current Clocks remain unchanged.

It's a pain in the ass because I can't tweak it and hard reset it as needed, due to the fact that the rig is actually half a world away and my buddy is most of the time out of his office, where the rig is. To make matters worse, his Internet connection at the moment is very basic, so there's no static IP, so everytime something goes wrong and I can remotely reboot to prevent some crazy fire while nobody is in that office, I can't log back in because it changed the freaking IP. LOL

So, here I am, mining with the two GPUs from the card in the middle. I switched to Eligius so that I don't have to Add the new IP to the Whitelist of Slush after every reboot.

If any of the more seasoned miners cares to help, I'm more than willing to share some bitcoins once the rig starts "showing me the btcs".

Cheers!

How to install AMDOverdriveCtrl on Ubuntu via remote SSH?
by
ixfinito
on 16/06/2011, 00:54:55 UTC
I tried:

wget -O amdoverdrivectrl_1.2.0_amd64.deb "http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/amdovdrvctrl/deb%20binaries/amdoverdrivectrl_1.2.0_amd64.deb?r=http%3A%2F%2Fsourceforge.net%2Fprojects%2Famdovdrvctrl%2F&ts=1307967653&use_mirror=switch"

sudo dpkg -i amdoverdrivectrl_1.2.0_amd64.deb

As suggested here http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=7514.msg212294#msg212294

But with the "wget -O...etc." command it contacts sourceforge.net and returns a NOT FOUND message.

Another method I saw in another thread http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=11561.0 seems to install amdoverdrivectrl also, but it includes several other things, so I don't want to mess with the mining rig until someone knowledgeable can confirm it's ok.

And of course, I can't post directly in those threads because I have to fill my Newbie quota, sadly.

The reason I need to do it this way is because my rig is in another country and my buddy helping me with maintenance over there is out of town for a few days.

I need to get the memory speed down and see if that can cool my GPUs down a bit. I've got 3x6990 btw, but can only operate 3 of the 6 miners at the moment, because the temperatures are simply insane otherwise. I've tried flags and stuff, but it will need to be the memory speed tweak I suppose.

Thanks in advance for your kind help.

Cheers,

Ixfinito
