I've used BTCLot and have a great services with him.

At first I have tried to order on amazon.fr in every manners possible but it didn't worked. I have talked with Coinbuck during the whole 3 days, he was very responsive and clear. We have exchanged 13 messages in 4 days and in average he answered within the 1.74 hours! That is really quick.

Finally I have given up amazon.fr which doesn't work with virtual cards and instead I have ordered on amazon.co.uk which has worked fine! I have ordered for about 45€ and one of the packet is already dispatched.

Thank you Coinbuck for you excellent service and support!

I'm just using your services, transfered some bitcoins and was wondering if I did it correctly to get a virtual card? In the purchase you have 1. 2. 3. like steps so I did begin by sending to Bitstamp, but I don't see my bitcoins anywhere.

Could you indicate the correct way to get a virtual card? maybe by adding some text on the page and please add a "customer" email for question, that would be great. Thanks.

EDIT: This is just fine, my deposit appeared for sell in euro, then I generated a card. I will see soon how well things goes to order on web sites with it.

Re: Centralization is Killing BitCoin
by
jamesb
on 05/07/2011, 15:05:46 UTC
I think we really need a way to decentralize mining pool. It seems btcguild is DDos at the moment and deepbit has again a too big part of the Network power, anyone who could hack their system could use their user power and put all in a mess. We should take it really seriously, we are quite lucky because nothing happened yet.

As the article says, it is really easy to develop a centralized system for everything but it is so vulnerable (to our level) that it shouldn't be a long-term solution and I think it is already late, but we can do something before anything really harmful happens. We need to think a way to make a P2P mining pool system which shouldn't depends on a such insufficient number of "master" peer.

We can make a centralized-decentralized system like Freenode which have super-nodes (>50 pools and >15 super-nodes/pool) and lots of other peers. I think the problem is that 50 BTC is huge and should be decreased. But I hope we will find a way to avoid cheating among those super-nodes (one has to collect the shares, make the block and distribute their reward). Maybe we should modify the bitcoin system to include the meaning of mining share or something like this.

Hey, I need some testnet bitcoins. Something like 20-50 would be fine but the faucet only gives away 0.11. Is there any nice guy which can give me them please ( mhP3E27xcV9fgkKcWgukJYEgw7ewNRSaBX ), of course give me an address to send them back. Thank you.

Re: What does the community need for this summer (2011)?

@cablestudios: I think I may not be involved in these kind of huge project. I mean I cannot take risks at buying/selling house with Bitcoin because this is a very serious business and involves contracts for example. Moreover I don't think there was any house selling with Bitcoin yet. But I may make the web site which could serve as selling and buying platform. If there are people interested I would be happy to develop a such kind of site.

@qikaifu: Services like banks and paypal are seriously risky and involves big responsibility, we can see the mess that the Mt.Gox issue created in the community because of the security problem (but they offer great services to the community). Again creating a web site is totally different than managing and assuming it. And you may say "Bitcoin is all about money so it is risky and you have to take the responsibility for any service you make". That's really true (I can see it now). When you say a bank you think of 'keeping Bitcoins safe', but anyone could do that. Maybe instead you would mean 'lend money'? For that you should have an investment for the base.

You mentioned the clearcoin and mybitcoin but how can they be improved, what features do they leak? Maybe you mean to merge them in an unique platform? The transactions today are quite slow for confirmations (I saw '6' in the code) but it doesn't mean you cannot spend them, you could wait only 1 confirmation (maybe by patching bitcoin). So the main advantage of mybitcoin is that you don't wait for your transactions to be confirmed (are they other?). But I think they are instantaneous only if the transactions were inside mybitcoin, right?

Still open to new ideas. Let them come Smiley

What does the community need for this summer (2011)?
by
jamesb
on 25/06/2011, 10:29:55 UTC
Hello,

I've been in the Bitcoin community, mining in pools and discussing (a little) on these forums since January of this year. I've tried to search great ideas for the community: like offering my services (hosting and my development skills on the wiki/my site) which I offer 3-4 people at the moment but no development project yet!; like offering platform to help the community (this post).

I think I prefer asking the community about what they really want to see because there are so many ideas and projects that has started recently that it's hard to decide what is a good idea. Moreover I have this summer (for me already in a few days) some (1-2 months) this summer so I can spend them to do interesting and useful things. I have great skills in programming like in C/Python/PHP and I like making web site development (but I'm not good at designing).

Here is some ideas I have got on the top of my head :
- Exchange/Pay files or maybe real things (seems already made like the auctions sites: biddingpond.com OTC and on this forum);
- Grid/Mining platform for passwords/RSA/physics/math calculus with GPU (found here);
- Distributed file system (like that) or something related to the encryption problem people have these days (that post);
- I have little plans to enhance the GUI which leaks some features (like that post and clearer GUI);
- Futurist game (MMO RTS) which could use Bitcoin to buy/sell game items/things between players... or to buy items/subscription (too oldschool and already done by Dragon's tale);

I'm sure there are thousand of ideas which I've even never thought, so give it a try and post your ideas and opinions!

@krepta3000: The difference is that Bitcoin only needs your password to send (encrypt and sign) coins. When it starts, it reads the transactions list in the memory and shouldn't keep the password in the memory.

When you copy your wallet file on the TrueCrypt volume it is encrypted on the hard disk but you can still access it unencrypted as long as your volume is open. You should use the -datadir option to tell Bitcoin to use the folder in your encrypted volume.

But the best way to protect your wallet is to use the bitcoin version proposed on GIT which encrypt with AES your wallet and ask for your password (it is not integrated yet in the official version). TrueCrypt is good for your backup but if you keep the volume open this won't be more secure than having your wallet in your regular directory.

Thank to both of you. Pieter Wuille's post is very useful after InstaGx's answer.

In Pieter Wuille's answer I've read that there is no verification of the address. It will be a great idea to publish somewhere a list of generated address (each of one signed for proof of existence) so we can have safe transaction. Thank you anyway.

5. Delete the original wallet.dat file. (I won't lose anything right?)

Wrong too! If you don't erase the old file bytes on the hard drive it will be easily read again. You will have to use a secure random to overwrite the bytes if you want your deleted file to be unreadable forever (like shred on Unix)!

Transaction fees (for 0.01 BTC)
by
jamesb
on 23/06/2011, 11:31:39 UTC
Hello,

I've sent 0.01 BTC to an address to check the system is working (auto generation of address) without any fee and it is. But now I cannot send my 0.01 BTC back because it requests a small fee of: 0.005 BTC. I've tried with the GUI and RPC and it is the same behavior : "Error: This transaction requires a transaction fee of at least 0.0005 because of its amount, complexity, or use of recently received funds".
Ok now I would like to understand why is there such a limitation (I mean why didn't have I to pay a fee for the 1st transaction but only for the 2nd?)? Is there a way to send them anyway and wait even if it has ridiculous low priority? It's been 3 days that I test it so the "recently received funds" should have expired?

An other short question: Can someone sends bitcoins to an offline generated address and the address owner check he received them when he is online again? If yes it should means that when my client generates a new address it don't needs to broadcast it or inform the Network.

Transactions comments and messages (fields)
by
jamesb
on 16/06/2011, 17:33:10 UTC
Hello,

I've successfully compiled bitcoin 0.3.23 from the sources and I was reading the code. I was wondering why are there 'message' and 'comment' value in CWalletTx.wtx map. I think there isn't any of these fields in the transaction written in the block chain so I understood that this is only local to the wallet.

But at the moment I didn't see how to change these fields manually or from the GUI. I think commenting the transactions is a good idea only if this is in the encrypted part of the wallet (is it?).

Moreover I've seen only a few people talking about including messages in transaction and I see the message field was gone from the GUI which was only available with a IP-to-IP transactions. Why was there a such limitation? Bitcoin is working with asymmetrical keys so it musn't be hard to add and encrypt a message in any transaction.

I hope there are some interesting reasons and discussion we can make. Smiley

Re: poclbm using CPU 100% even though using GPU?
by
jamesb
on 04/06/2011, 14:00:43 UTC
When I was using Ubuntu 10.10 and NVidia 260.19.36, there are no problems - poclbm was using only 0-5 %
Today I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 and fresh NVidia driver 270.41.19, and now poclbm (and phoenix too) are using up to 100% Sad

When I install old NVidia driver 260.19.36 on Ubuntu 11.04, poclbm is digging and "top" shows low cpu usage (0-5%), but unfortunately X server cannot starting complaining about "ABI version mismatch". Now I am on Ubuntu 11.04 with fresh driver, and also seeking for better solution... Maybe I'll have to go back to Ubuntu 10.10.

EDIT: videocard is - nVidia Corporation GT215 [GeForce GT 240] (rev a2) ~20.000 khash/s

I can confirm this problem too, new drivers 270... makes my cpu work more for nothing! I've downgraded to 260 and now it's fine. Thank you Wink and about your ubuntu problem you should rmmod and modprobe your nvidia kernel module before restarting xorg, or reboot. It should fix your error.

IMHO this problem is caused by the OpenCL implementation in the driver, I am testing the RPC miner (CUDA) under Windows 7 and it works fine, with very small CPU usage (< 1%) and 80% of the poclbm efficiency (43 vs 55 mhash/s). [...]

I have GTX 275 and C2Q 9450 @ 2,66 GHz.

I've got a GTX 285 and the same CPU and got 60 Mhs on linux with poclbm (at max without Xorg). Do you think CUDA could change dramatically the performance? Something like > 65 Mhs?
EDIT: I've tested puddinpop's miner with CUDA and I'm getting less (45-55 Mhs and it has frozen my kernel!) than poclbm OpenCL at "low rate" (-f at 150 I get 56 Mhs) which allows me to use my computer without refreshing latency at all (if I whish I can set -f0 and mine at 60 Mhs without Xorg! How can it be better?).

by
jamesb
on 02/06/2011, 15:00:15 UTC
Hello there,

I've decided to offer my service as a programmer for Bitcoins. I have several years of experience in C and Python, to begin I propose to make simple programs. For example: a solver for your homeworks, scripts to automate tasks, file/network processing, OpenGL drawing. At the moment I prefer to not offer my skill for big projects because I wanted first to experiment little programs.

If you are interested, my current price is at 0.312 BTC/hour ; to contact me visit my web site: here Wink I hope you will give me some interesting program to make! Source code will be given and it will be yours.

One thing you can do is to not mine but you can sell your computer power for bitcoins. I've already think about something like this, like a grid. You could do a pool which don't solve blocks but instead solve some problems that someone has paid for an answer. It may be based on the computer power used. It's only an idea so my answer may be out of the subject.

Idea: Exchange platform
by
jamesb
on 21/04/2011, 13:18:57 UTC
Hello everyone,

I've got an idea of project which could really be useful to anyone who wants to share Bitcoins and work in general. I don't know if whether someone has already think about this but maybe not and I'll try to make it if it's worth it for the community. First I'll describe in a few words what I mean and I will develop the possible ways it can go.

Origin: I've seen multiple times people posting their services about drawing, text writing, file sharing. It would use the way people rates each other in forums to ensure quality.

Idea: My goal is to build something like a forum where you can post messages depending on if you want to do something for somebody or if you are waiting of something. In the first case you can ask a payment for an attached file. There will be a thumbnail or a short part of the thing you "sell" visible. Then anyone can buy it with the amount fixed by the offering person. The platform will pay the offerer. In the second case you deposit the amount you think your request is worth. It can be a simple question in math, physics, computer science, it could be some piece of code, of text, an image to draw. When people reply to your initial post you you can decide which people to pay. The people may even rate all the posts and the ones which has the best score gains his payment (it can be split or not).

Deposing: To verify every transaction I propose asking people to deposit the amount they want to buy some services in the platform. It allows us to be sure the person has enough to pay. I don't think when you are a seller it is necessary to keep the coins in the platform. It may be when a better answer has arrived or when an answer/file wasn't what was excepted and the people want to be given back their coins.

Rating: The people on the platform should be rated to ensure quality, assurance to everyone. This system could become a really great platform for exchanges as far as people post comments about the posters. It's like now on the forums but it may be improve.

Offering: This part is quietly safe because the person put its text, image or file on the platform but it must be hidden. One can view a part of it in a thumbnail for example. If you are interested you have to pay the offerer in the platform to access entirely the data. These may be split into parts (different size of images, pages, chapter or archives). When the person has made its payment (and it's validated) then he can download/access the file(s) and the offerer is paid (It looks like a "App Store").

Requesting: The requester has to send some bitcoins to pay the answers then this is a little bit more risky because when someone reply, its answer may not be paid. In one way the requester could refuse to pay and use all the answers. It may be possible to hide all replies but you cannot choose the best one anymore. The solution is to let people rate the answers and the requester can choose the answer(s) he wants to pay. If the requester don't pay after a few days (more or less) the payment should be split to the people which have useful answers based on the community rates of these. It may be after a few days if the origin requester don't pay or longer. (This looks like helping forums but more general and you earn Bitcoins).

Answers: As I wrote in the beginning the word answer may refer to text, images or more generally files that the requester needs. These answers may be displayed partially to protect stealing until the person is paid for example. Again it could be an option to let people decide about that.

Coding: I have enough skills in PHP, DB, web to code this platform as a forum for example. It may take several weeks or months to achieve a certain quality. I may need some help but I can do it myself of course.

Fees: As you know everyone wants to earn Bitcoins. I don't want to force people to pay an overhead but I think it's a good idea to let people choose how many they want to pay to support the platform (Paying my/our work and servers) like on mining bitcoins.cz.

Here it is! A long post. I hope you enjoy my idea and you can give your opinion, ideas and whatever you want about it.

This uses flash but you can do it in HTML5 and with CSS if you want to. Changing the color when the mouse is hover is easy and the opening box under the link is not very hard. You could use JQuery to make your life easier: animation, fading, event are basic stuff with it.

About including it in WordPress I don't know it very well. I work with HTML standard in general but I think I can make it if the code isn't that messy.

I just had a new idea with the SSH access I offer. Is there people which are interested having SSH access for short period like one/few hours for very little price ? The utility is to transfer files from two servers, download something quickly and volatile, mount a temporary NFS (why not?), temporary torrrent leeching/seeding or anything like this. Any suggestions ?
