Re: Is GPU hobby-mining dead?

I have been thinking about this a lot lately. I was late to the game but invested in 10mh/s rig setup in January. I have not made ROI and probably never will. There is movement to make GPU only coins, but lets be honest, if crypto currency is ever to go "mainstream", it cannot be supported by grassroots GPU mining. Special hardware will always win in this case.

Any tips on actually getting into Leaserig? Doesn't seem like you can just sign up and go, they want forum reputation threads, security deposit, etc.. It looks to be the most profitable but also has a barrier to entry.

Is the consensus that GPU mining is dead? I see ebay being flooded with rigs now and getting concerned about selling mine for any decent amount.

It is hard to tell. Profits are way way way down right now.. So much so that people are about to start losing money just on electricity alone. I hope it comes back up because i invested in 8.5mh/s last month.

[ANN] Cryptonewz - A cryptocoin news aggregate
by

on 12/03/2014, 18:18:52 UTC
We just launched http://cryptonewz.com/.

With so many sources of crypto-currency news out there you might find it difficult to keep track, so we are attempting to do the hard work for you. We pull in various feeds across the web and filter out redundant articles and promote only the best/most important ones.

We have only just begun and plan to add more features in the near future.

Please let me know what you think and what features you would like to see.

We also accept article submissions if you have something you want to say.

Are all the pools dropping in profits today or is Clevermining having problems with the mass influx of new miners?

How to make BAMT stable?
by
jbass350z
on 28/02/2014, 23:56:51 UTC
I have 3 rigs running 6x 270 GPUs each. Most are Gigabyte, but a few are Asus. I get anywhere between 450-490 kh/s per GPU. At least once a day one or two of the rigs crashes, and there seems to be two types of failures:

1. The first type of failure the GPUs go to zero load and miner restart will usually get things going.

2. The second type of failure the GPUs are still under load but BAMT shows no mining activity, and SSH login is very laggy. A reboot is usually required to fix this.

Failure # 2 above often results in this message upon reboot:

xauth: (argv):1: merge: unable to open file /home/user/.Xauthority

Sometimes it takes a few reboots to get things running again. This is becoming frustrating because i cant babysit these miners all day and reboot them every time one freezes.

What do I do?

You may want to to limit the users. It seems the higher the MH/s go the less profit there is to be had. People will just move on to the next pool once it reaches a breaking point.

Careful with the results.. If everyone moves to clever they are going to suck too! It seems when a pool gets too large they cant sustain the smaller profitable coins.

Why is the reject rate so high (it is not fixed!). Is it the particular coin that is being mined?

I've run middlecoin for a week and returns were aweful. Much less than .01/mhs daily.

One note on your test, 48hours may be too short to determine true results. One pool could have a lucky day and skew the results. I would like to see you run this test for a week at least and report daily stats along with an overall 7-day earnings.

Automated cgminer monitor and restart script
by
jbass350z
on 16/02/2014, 18:37:51 UTC
My BAMT would go down randomly every once in awhile and it sucked leaving home for a few hours only to return to dead miners. Crontab is the answer. I ran across another guys post awhile back and tweaked it for BAMT use.
Below assumes you are logged in as root:

Create file:  /home/user/cron/checker.sh

1. cd /home/user
2. mkdir cron
3. cd cron
4. nano checker.sh
5. Inside file put the following:
Code:
#!/usr/bin/env bash
ps -A | grep cgminer > cgminer.status
if [[ -s cgminer.status ]] ; then
echo "running eval date +%T_%d-%m-%Y " >> cgminer.log
else
echo "NOT running eval date +%T_%d-%m-%Y " >> cgminer.log
/etc/init.d/mine restart
fi;
6. chmod 755 checker.sh

Save the file:
1. ctrl+x
2. y
3. enter

Edit crontab:
1. nano /etc/crontab
2. Add this at the bottom:
3. */15 * * * * root cd /home/user/cron && ./checker.sh >/dev/null 2>&1
4. ctrl+x
5. y
6. enter

Restart crontab:
1. service crontab restart

So what does this do? It checks cgminer ever 15 minutes and logs whether or not it is working. If it is not running it restarts cgminer.

If you want to to reboot the machine instead restart cgminer change this line:
Code:
/etc/init.d/mine restart

to

Code:
coldreboot

No issues here.

I have the Rev 4.0 board in two machines running six Gigabyte 270s in each. The cards get 480-490khs/s.

I am also using a Sempron 145.

Out of interest, have you tried unlocking the second core?

No, i have not. No need for that?
