Re: CBDC in Russia
by
jc01480
on 27/07/2023, 00:41:49 UTC
From August 1, the law will come into force, but CBDC won't work everywhere and it is not yet clear how this will work in practice.

I do not understand the idea of CBDC. The country does not want bitcoin to be legalized but since they see the people's interest in crypto coins, they decide to launch their own CBDCs. The government control CBDC with no control over the supply is a no threat to bitcoin.
Also when all the countries do not have their CBDC, how will they operate within the countries? One contury want to trade in fiat while other in CBDC  Huh  Or will the people be allowed to buy bitcoin through CBDC ?

I don't see this model working well as of the developments till now Huh

The government doesn't want private individuals (corporations) to control a cryptocurrency as it could undermine the national currency control schemes (e.g., avoid sanctions, controls, and legal obligations). As long as the government controls it, it can impose a much broader swath of restrictions, albeit digitally. For example, they don't have to issue sanctions. They can quietly prohibit cryptocurrency exchange by any party that is deemed whatever. Dissidents, thieves, political figures, you name it. They control the entirety of the pocketbook. Credit and debit cards are a highly loose form of this digital control. With CBDC, they can do it instantaneously. You can only spend on what they say you can spend with whoever they say. Don't want anyone buying guns? Ban the exchange addresses of all gun dealers. No legislation or negotiation is needed. This is an autocrat or dictator's dream.

This is not news.  This has been a known issue for years.  Why is anyone surprised?  Might as well let the Fed moderate this thing.

Doesn’t DUckDuckGo run on the Tor network?  If you do a packet capture and check the IPs you should see them as tor nodes.  Also all traffic is encrypted I believe.  I like it for searching specific things like hacker stuff.  I’m a researcher.

Most of them are Jews-owned, or leftist-owned, and so are just pure propaganda. Some nice medias are not controlled. They're all from far-right.

What? Media's from far right aren't controlled? Are you being sarcastic? Anyway, I believe no big major media house is independent in today's time. They're all backed by big corporations hence have to take care of their interests
Modern media seems to be a little reckless with validating details and filling in the gaps through speculation substituted as fact.  Every day you hear some reporting and I’m like “...that’s not right!”  Two weeks late they issue a retraction in some obscure portion of their news site.  Oftentimes I feel like they just shotgun noise out there knowing they have so many days before a retraction is required.  Meanwhile, the hyped frenzy stimulates thei traffic numbers and ad revenue, even if they know it’s wrong.  This is all speculation on my part, btw.

Re: Cryptocurrencies and politics

I know that people here really want to continue saying that Crypto is going to be the thing that is able to take governments, politics, big banks, and so on and so forth down. But you really have to think about what you're saying, you're saying that our VERY SMALL tech is going to be able to overthrow trillions upon trillions of dollars of industry which has been created over hundreds and hundreds of years.

If we are ever something which is going to pose a danger to a politician, bank, lobbyist, etc etc. Then we're going to be crushed with regulation, bans, and so on and so forth.

The banks won't allow their grip to be lost, you have to understand that.

I second your opinion as we’ve already seen government action against crypto currencies.  Eventually it will be like driving down the road with 10k in cash.  The mere possession of that much money is indicative of money laundering and can be seized at will in the US.  Not a crime, either.  It’s mere civil forfeiture.  The burden is on you to get it back.  If it was 10,000 Bitcoin, you’d likely experience the same process.  Only an uninformed officer would likely lose all your private keys.  (Murphy’s Law).

Russian Dump of US Treasuries Fueling Bitcoin?
by

on 18/07/2018, 04:43:22 UTC
Saw this today and wondered if the rebound could be linked to the dumping of at least half of US Treasuries bonds by Russia.  Hints are this will soon coincide with a massive dump by China in the next few days.  Seems like China-Russia is allied against the US economically and maybe people are pulling their money out.

China's influence on the price of bitcoin is still very large

Hell, they could probably pick a currency and take it over with a 51% attack if they wanted (and concerted their efforts).

Been away from this forum a while.  What is this “merit” thing?  Man, blink an eye around here and stuff gets weird, quick.

Edit:Holy crap!  How did I get 500 merit?  Now this is awkward.

For the same reason I keep my identity a secret, I suppose.

Bitcoin ends central control.  Every flavor of crypto currency equates to the current market value of some country’s fiat.  The idea of crypto is changing the world, one in which government is no longer the dominant player.

Re: Bitcoin is not gambling

I don't know why people say bitcoin is gambling. Its not gambling. You are investing your money and time. You use your internet. So its not gambling dealing with it.

So many governments are looking at ways to get a piece of the action.  Categorizing as “gambling” is just one.  Others see it as investing.  Cities all over the US and beyond are trying to figure out how they can tax online sales originating in their jurisdiction.  You think crypto is cool?  You should see some of the suggestions proffered to “control” crypto (and their profits).  Your local municipality is in a long line of government organizations trying to reinvigorate their budgets out of desperation.

Wex is not going to cooperate with any US-based customers at all.  End of story.  Yes, that sucks.  Remember, the FBI is still investigating.  I personally suspect that this is the beginning of a concerted effort to freeze out any Americans from crypto currency in retaliation.  But I cannot justify this statement.

This is really interesting in light of the US crackdown of Russian state-sponsored crypto currency exchanges like btc-e.  That was purely a poke in the eye of the bear.  The chaos the US hoped would ensue in the Russian underworld of organized crime is clearly coming to fruition.
