Not sure if anyone else has come across this but it seems to be a new type of Dwolla, although the description says that transactions are shared with the public in a social way. Seems like a cross between Dwolla and Bitcoin without the anonymity.
Your not the only one. Mining requires investment upfront in equipment. I find it much easier to watch the charts at bitcoincharts and invest accordingly.

I heard/read about it a year or so ago and recently (last week) stumbled on it again. I bought some coins to test out and love it. I see it as an investment and also a way for us to change internet money transfers.

You should look into Armory so that your wallet is encrypted and you can also make a paper wallet with it. Print up a bunch of copies of your wallet and store them in your real wallet, the mattress, in a book, etc..
