Re: how can I prove that I initiated a Bitcoin transaction?
by
joe1234

Thank you all for your help. Unfortunately, I forgot to ask an important question in my first post:

Can the task of signing a message with my address - so that I can prove I am the owner of a transaction - be done
after the transaction has taken place? For example, if the recipient complains a week later that I am not the person
who initiated the transaction, can I still sign a message at that point?

Please note that I am using Electrum on Tails without persistence, so I would need to recover my Electrum wallet
from the seed.

Thank you!

how can I prove that I initiated a Bitcoin transaction?

Hello.

Is there a way to prove that I was the person who sent money to a specific Bitcoin address?
For example, if it is not enough to simply show that a transaction over the amount of 123 arrived at
that address, but if it is required to prove that I am the "owner" (sender) of the Transaction?

Thank you!

PS
I am using Electrum on Tails without persistence, but I did make a backup (Files -> Save backup -> Backup Directory)

misstyped Bech32 address

⭐ Merited by ABCbits (1)
What are the chances of accidentally sending satoshis to an incorrect (but in use) BTC address, if a single character is mistyped in a Bech32 (SegWit) address?

Re: sweeping paper wallet: sweep no input found
by

Thanks, everyone, for your help! I had to test several configurations, including with and without scanning the QR code and rebooting the OS. In the end, it turned out to be a missing or incorrect prefix.

Now for the "No inputs found" message, click the "Info" button on the upper-right hand side of that 'Sweep private keys' window.
If unsure or if the script type isn't indicated in your paper wallet, you may type your private key with three different script types.
You can skip "p2pkh:" and just type the WIF private key for it to also include P2PK UTXOs, then include the other two.
Thanks to this message, it became clear that the problem was probably with the address that was entered incorrectly.
.
An additional uncertainty was that I had entered the wrong public key into blockchain.info and received no clear error message, so for a while I thought I had previously sent all my BTC balance to a wrong address, for example, the one of my one paper wallet.

What type of script (address) are your funds allocated to?

When scanning private keys in Electrum, you must specify to it which type of script Electrum will scan for the amount, which are:

p2pkh: Legacy address that always starts with 1

p2wpkh-p2sh: Nested segwit address, starts with 3

p2wpkh: Native segwit address, starts with bc1

Depending on the address type, you must include the above options as a prefix followed by the private key, e.g.:

p2wpkh:LorKxyz(address...)

Note: for legacy addresses, just enter the private key without the prefix, using the prefix in private keys/legacy addresses is optional.

p2wpkh was the solution Smiley

Thank's again for your great help!

Do not use QR code but use copy/paste or transfer using file. You may not like this which is the reason you use Tails OS but Electrum can give such error while using QR code for signing on a cold wallet.
Good to know!

Use this guide to spend from Electrum cold storage: https://electrum.readthedocs.io/en/latest/coldstorage.html
Why do you suggest using cold storage? Is it because that's the safest approach if I'm running Electrum on Tails without persistence?

AFAIK, you previously asked not-so-distant questions about four years ago.
Is this related to that setup?: /index.php?topic=5359941.msg57935920#msg57935920

Interestingly, you seem to forget your previous threads and ask questions that you should've known since you must have used/tested it before.
Like this thread three years later where you asked if the seed can restore old funds: /index.php?topic=5504113
I have a note there as well, link: /index.php?topic=5504113.msg64361703#msg64361703

You are right, I have asked similar questions in the past. However, I can assure you that today is the first time
I have had real-world experience with Bitcoin.

In this case, my focus was on whether the initial connection duration of Electrum with the Internet/node/blockchain
has any influence on whether BTC funds can be lost.

Thank you very much for your patience and the good answers. I have learned a lot from them Smiley

sweeping paper wallet: sweep no input found
by
joe1234
on 04/06/2025, 10:55:38 UTC
Hello

My understanding was that, after creating a new Electrum wallet (on Tails), Electrum would prompt me to write down the seed as one of the first steps. However, in my case, this was different...

I did the following steps:
-> Create/Restore wallet -> default_wallet -> Import Bitcoin Address or Private Key (scanned the QR code of the paper
wallet with an USB cam)  -> Wallet -> Private Keys -> Sweep -> scanned the QR code with an USB cam

Error message:
"sweep no input found"

Question:
What I am doing wrong?

Thank you!

power outage before transaction arrived (Electrum on Tails)
by
joe1234
on 03/06/2025, 12:10:30 UTC
Hello

I am wondering what could happen to my BTC funds under the following circumstances...

1.
creating a new wallet in Electrum (on Tails with NO persistence, that means a Linux Live System)

2.
writing down the 12 word seed

3.
sharing the wallet-address to a donor

4.
donor send BTC to my (wallet) address

5.
Power outage of my PC running Electrum (on Tails with NO persistence)

Question:

Does it depend on how long the PC running Electrum on Tails (with NO persistence) was connected to the
internet/blockchain (before the power outage happened), whether my Bitcoins are lost or not?

Thank's a lot!

Securely sweeping a paper wallet into Electrum ok this way?
by
joe1234
on 02/06/2025, 11:15:16 UTC
Hello

Many years ago, I bought a fraction of Bitcoin at a Bitcoin ATM. Now, I intend to
sweep the entire amount from the paper wallet into Electrum running on Tails
(without persistence).

The private Keys do start with K and L.

Questions:
1.
Can I blindly trust and follow this guide?
https://bitcoinelectrum.com/sweeping-your-private-keys-into-electrum/

2.
Does that mean, after creating a new Electrum wallet and writing down the automatically
generated new seed, the computer could be rebooted without loosing any funds?

Thank's lot in advance for any feedback!

.
.
PS:
After the funds have arrived in Electrum, I will transfer them to the Relai app, which is
linked to my IBAN bank account. This makes trading very easy.

spend imported funds partially

Hello

started with Bitcoin about in year 2020 using BRD wallet app and never touched it again. Today I would like to recover my funds into
Electrum of Tails (no persitance) in order to make a donation to GraphneOS.

I will recover the funds into Electrum like shown here:
Recover BRD Wallet (BreadWallet) in Electrum
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5204223.0

Question:
Since I am not going to donate the entire BTC funds to this foundation I am wondering what will happen with the rest if I am
going to shutdown Tails..

Are the non spent/donated funds lost this way? What precedure do you recomend?

Thank's a lot in advance,

Re: different address types
by

Take note that any online device is always prone to hacking and it's recommended that the wallet is offline and your private keys never connect to the interent. That's why I recommended to import your private keys on an offline (preferably to be air-gapped) device and sign your transaction there. This doesn't mean you can't use an online device and sweep your private keys.

An offline device means to me something like a Trezor..

How can a transaction be signed on an offline device and why that is needed?

Thank's in advance for additional help!

Why sweeping the private key of a paper wallet isn't a good idea?
A paper wallet should be always offline. Otherwise, you would defeat the purpose of a paper wallet.
Since you can only sweep your private key into an online wallet and there is no way to sweep a private key into an offline wallet, it's better to import your private key into an airgapped device, sign the transaction offline and don't use the sweep feature.

This is assuming you have created your paper wallet on an airgapped device in the correct way. If you didn't do so, you have already defeated the purpose of a paper wallet and your so-called paper wallet isn't really a paper wallet.

My paper wallet was made by Bitcoin ATM machine. In general, are you concerned that I could loose my funds during sweeping the paper wallet into Electrum (preinstalled on Tails) or are you more concerned about privacy?

Thank you!

It's not a good idea to sweep the private key of your paper wallet. Instead, you should import your private key on an offline device (preferably to be airgapped) and then send the fund to any address you want.
Since you can't sweep your private key if the wallet is offline and your wallet has to be online, that would defeat the purpose a paper wallet.

different address types

Hello

I intend to sweep funds from a paper-wallet and other funds from an old BRD-wallet (12 words known) into Electrum (preinstalled on Tails).

1.
Do I have to care something about during start/setup of Electrum (Tails) if I inted to make a donation to https://grapheneos.org/donate
(there are different addresses listed/suggested at https://grapheneos.org/donate and I don't know which address-type to use) ?

2.
Sometimes in the future I will be required to show simple Bitcoin tasks to an audience. That means a transaction (of about 5 USD) to a
person of the audience should be confirmed withhin about 5-10 minutes. Should i use Bech32m (Taproot) addresses for such a demo?

Thank's in advance!

connection without IP to my own full node
by
joe1234
on 15/05/2024, 11:54:32 UTC
In an answer of a topic which does not really relate to my question, the following is written:

The best way to maintain privacy is by running your own full node and also using different address for different transactions. If you run your own node and then point electrum server towards it then your privacy might be protected and you won’t depend on other nodes for information and also you can use Tor or VPN to hide your IP too if you’re connected to other nodes
It is worth mentioning also that running your own node or personal electrum server should be connected with Tor for privacy reason. Connecting it with IP is not private enough as your Internet network provider can still see some information about you and that you are using Bitcoin Core.

Question:
How does it work to connect to my own fullnode without IP? Copy the the transaction physically to the full node, e.g. by using an USB stick?

can't mixed cons be deposited into a centralized exchange

Hello

in a thread with an other subject, a person pasted the follwing statement:

I don't know why some member mention mixer when OP mainly ask about wallet. But OP and reader should take note that not all mixers are equally good and usually mixed coin can't be deposited into centralized exchange.

Why is that the case? Does a mixer try to follow the entire way of Bitcoin funds, and if the "path" is intransparent,
mixing is not performed?

2.
The same, if funds from a paper wallet are sweeped to Electrum?
