Re: [video] Nothing At Stake Explained in 4 Minutes

Why do you keep beating around this debunked myth? It does not cost nothing to produce a block. Wha t the fuck...

Where is the cost?

I think you misunderstand the concept. Sure it is possible to fork a POS cryptocurrency by forging a block on an alternate chain and broadcasting your new chain, but if the chain that you do this on doesn't have over 50% of the stake forging on it, it will lose out to the main branch.

You are welcome to attempt to forge on as many branches as you want at the same time in Proof of Stake, but unless everyone else is mindlessly running their nodes with a multibranch stategy, the attack that you try may cost nothing, but it will not work.

The explanation is just superb!

Thanks Kushti, happy to know I got it correct Smiley

Who are you replying to here?

Proof of stake in the PP/NVC fork is essentially different from NXT algo.
It is not true that no resources are used.
Everything is mixed up and confusing.

Yes, in the video I focus on nxt like 100% pos systems, but parallels can be drawn from this to other more complicated systems.

[video] Nothing At Stake Explained in 4 Minutes
by
jones_
on 13/08/2015, 06:15:17 UTC
I made a short video explaining what nothing at stake means with proof of stake cryptocurrencies as well as what can be done about it and how much it effects the currency as a whole.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzIl3vmEytY

In this video I discuss what is generally called a short range nothing at stake double spend attempt. Nothing at stake could mean a few other potential issues, but this is the most interesting to study and the one that is potentially feasible in most Proof of stake systems.

thank you to kushti and the consensus research team (http://consensusresearch.org/) for their work on this subject.

What is the latest about this hackathon centered around the API of Nxt competition?
Has a winner emerged?

The competition begins in around 18 hours.

I will update the title, that is a good idea.

Re: How is NXT decentralized?
by
jones_
on 30/07/2015, 05:20:13 UTC
Excuse my ignorance, but I can't seem to find an answer from the internet.

If NXT is a decentralized currency, why do I need to download their client to store my coin? That doesn't feel safe to me.

For example with Bitcoin,Monero,Litecoin, etc I can generate a random wallet and put it in cold-storage, but from what I understand NXT wallets are only stored online?

Am I missing something here?

In Bitcoin you use a wallet.Dat file, which in essance is a file that holds a passphrase, like you would use in nxt.

You can generate offline nxt accounts just like you would bitcoin, using http://jnxt.org/vapor the vapor wallet.

Nxt is just as decentralized as bitcoin or any other altcoin, imo it's more decentralized, but that's another topic.

Nxter.org did a very good article on this hackathon.

Explains the key points very well, good to explain it to people who are still a little bit confused.

And for the most up to date information and the chat that we will use for the competition is the #nxthacks channel on supernet slack (http://slackinvite.supernet.org to gain entry)
There will be many people, including myself, to answer any questions and help with problems during the hackathon.

I will like to participate in selecting the winners as I will like to see the crypto apps made.

Anyone who wants to watch the process and weigh in on the entries is invited to the slack channel.

Please forward this competition to as many developers as you know, so that we can have some good competition and make some interesting apps

http://slackinvite.supernet.org needs an invite, please send it to me in order to join.
Also you should try all you can to make the voting process of selecting the winners very transparent, if need be use random.org.

You just need to put your email in the form at that page and it should automatically send you an invite link to your email address.

The voting process will be conducted over the #nxthacks slack channel on SuperNet, so everyone will have input to arrive at a clear winner.

NxtHacks Hackathon - Last chance to sign up - 40'000 NXT first place (~$500)
by

on 16/07/2015, 04:28:15 UTC
I've been in the cryptocurrency space as a developer for a little over a year and a half now, and I have realized that there are so many cool ideas that have yet to come to the surface with this technology.

Personally I use Nxt as a platform because it has so many features that make it incredibly interesting to develop on. I decided that the best way to get some new ideas off of the ground was to have a hackathon centered around the API of Nxt, and with some help I have been able to do this.

Some information - http://jnxt.org/nxthacks

Date: 11:59PM (GMT+0) July 31st to 11:59PM (GMT-0) August 2nd (48 hours)

Prizes:
1st Place - 40'000 NXT (~$500)
2nd Place - 20'000 NXT (~$250)
3rd Place - 10'000 NXT (~$125)
The winners will be decided through a vote of all competitors and contributors to the hackathon.

Rules:
- Must be completed in the allotted 48 hours
- Must utilize one or more featurs of the Nxt API (http://jnxt.org:7876/test)
- Only solo entries are considered for prizes, teams can compete, but don't qualify for prizes.

You can use any programming language you would like, though js, node.js, python, or php are most common.

More information:
The sign up and information page http://jnxt.org/nxthacks

Introduction video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrL3WcReJyo
The Nxtforum thread https://nxtforum.org/general-discussion/testing-the-waters-an-nxt-hackathon/

And for the most up to date information and the chat that we will use for the competition is the #nxthacks channel on supernet slack (http://slackinvite.supernet.org to gain entry)
There will be many people, including myself, to answer any questions and help with problems during the hackathon.

* an in advance answer to the 'nxt is a scam' people:

No matter what you believe nxt to be, a scam, or a useless alt coin, it does have a very large API with many cool features that can be used to build cool little applications. I believe it is worth a try for a developer no matter what your skill level or language is.

Nice distribution  /s  ..  plus no anonymity features.
Is the market and other features fully opensource?
No thanks!

That chart is the balances currently being held at the bittrex exchange, not the distribution of all Nxt. You want something like this https://nxtblocks.info/#section/blockexplorer_distribution
Psudo-anonymity can be achieved by not linking your address to yourself, plus a core coin shuffling mechanism is on the way.

Everything on Nxt is open sourced and freely available https://bitbucket.org/JeanLucPicard/nxt/src

Re: Online demo for Nxt 1.5.10
by
jones_
on 08/06/2015, 06:24:12 UTC
It's not working for me. If I click the start button it says "your pass phrase is less than 35 characters long and is not secure" or something like that. On the second click it says "you must enter your pass phrase".
 Huh

I've removed any notifications and error messages associated with password length, but any sort of not allowing you to log in should only occur on the mainnet.

Could you try hitting ctrl + f5 (if your on windows) to do a full refresh of the page. It should work after that.

Online demo for Nxt 1.5.10
by
jones_
on 08/06/2015, 05:28:15 UTC
If you don't want to go through the trouble of installing the Nxt client or figuring out which lite wallet is best for the new Nxt 1.5.10 release, then try out the features online with this demo.

http://jnxt.org:6876 (top level page at http://nxt.org/demo/)

Just click the start demo button and you will arrive at an account funded with 200'000 Nxt.
This new version has the ability to create and vote in blockchain based polls, as well as make transactions that are only accepted into the chain when certain conditions are met (phased transactions).
If the account you arrive at is empty, just refresh the page and try again, you will enter a new account.

Sample screenshot:

Have fun Smiley

I like NXT, and have a few K of them to have and hold.  It is a genius project overall.

The asset exchange is good, though it's hard to browse through and find assets.

The marketplace needs a way for feedback and voting on the quality of the item sold in the marketplace... something like fiverr.

Haven't checked out the voting system nor the plugin system yet - lots of development going on.

Cheers

For following the up and coming AE assets I suggest http://jnxt.org/jayex
It is a frontend to the nxt asset exchange with charts and realtime updating, it works together with http://jnxt.org/jay to be a usable decentralized exchange

I see that you copied the "sorted by 7 day volume" from NXTBlocks...
Which is not very useful since it's always the same Assets... and volume can be easily faked on crypto exchanges.

Every real world exchange ranks 24 hr Net Change = basic window into events (with a minimum volume cutoff !!!)...
If you added that I would check it several times per day.

Nice work anyway  Smiley Smiley Smiley

Interesting, that might work well for this, I'll play around with this reorganizing with my next set of improvements.

What are my options for storing NXT outside of a centralized exchange?

In the blockchain through the client.

If you don't want to download the blockchain, try mynxt.info or mofowallet.com. mynxt.info also have andoid and iOS apps.

I'm very careful about what I install on my computer.  Can I install NRS in a sandbox somehow?  I suppose I could run it as a very unprivileged user.  I use Linux BTW.

I think a web wallet is too risky.

Would Jay be a good choice?

jay with http://jnxt.org/nxt can work well as a Web wallet solution, also nxtvault is an android version of jay. For secure cold storage I would suggest http://jnxt.org/vapor

How does that work?  Wouldn't I be trusting jnxt.org?

With vapor on an offline computer you are trusting no one, there is no way for your private key to even get to the jnxt servers, you can also use the nxt today android app to broadcast the transactions vapor creates to the network through qr codes.

Jay works in such a way that the client is locally downloaded and holds your private keys and is only in charge of signing transactions, those transactions are Givin to it by anything with jay.js like http://jnxt.org/nxt

Neither of these setups ever allow your password to be given to jnxt.org in the first place, so minimal trust is assured.
