Development update June 10th 2018 — Attention Economy

Cryptoscene will be developing and implementing an attention based economy similar to Steem’s, focused on the wants and needs of the reader and profoundly balanced to take into account the interests of all acting parties on Cryptoscene’s online platform.


In laymen’s terms this means that the content that will be displayed is targeted specifically at different types of users. We will be starting with 3 layers of users that will each be shown a different set of content > Novice, Intermediate and Advanced. To be categorized as such you will need to fill in a form at registration. Don’t worry though, at any given time a user would be able to switch between categories when they feel they are ready to dive into more technicalities, or they could progress more naturally, by reading articles and completing courses.

The new and refined model

In the new and refined model, as of currently, businesses would be allowed to post relevant updates or information on a separate blog section, but it would require advertising clients to pay with SCENE cryptocurrency tokens to acquire access. This will effectively drive more use for the online platform and increase the overall investment in the system, but most importantly allow users to be shown advertisements based on their needs and status. the Cryptoscene’s mechanics will be ideally suited to attract advertisers and to provide them with exposure in a healthy and non-intrusive manner.

The revenue from these targeted ‘advertorials’ if you will, will be put towards Cryptoscene’s community dividend model, which pays out authors, curators and content creators based on the usefulness of their content to the platform and simply if the readers liked it or not.

Quality based rewards > greater financial and targeted content incentive > Grows the overall value and impact of the system

Essentially by providing day to day news, tutorials, courses and more, the user base will grow and we will be able to fine-tune to the needs of our users — which would also be of great importance for our research towards our quarterly offline magazine. Mind you that advertisements will always be relevant to our readers and we will not promote ICO’s or other businesses that require investments of any kind. Businesses would have to pay in SCENE, whereas users would get paid in SCENE. It’s pretty similar to what Steem is doing on their platform, though they also pay out dividends over their ad revenue, which we might eventually do as we can stake some of our profits using the PoS software of the Neblio blockchain. Where we will differ ourselves is focusing on what every unique reader needs, and allowing them to supply us with the information we need to adjust Cryptoscene to their likings, quite like you see on modern day social media. This is incredibly complex feature to realize, but we have made up our minds and will do everything in our reach to work towards a functional beta version and progress from there.

So, what the heck is an attention economy?

You might be wondering what an advanced attention economy is if you don’t know about Steem yet, allow us to briefly explain the concept and why we feel the need to implement this as soon as possible on Cryptoscene.

Have you ever spent time in a third world country or with people who grew up in awful poverty? Then you might’ve noticed how much they talk about food — their favorite foods, what they’re going to eat this weekend, how they like this and don’t like that, and so on.

You could imagine that a big portion of these people’s lives and conversations revolves around food. This is for the simple reason that the scarcity of food makes it appear incredibly important. The fact you prefer strawberries to oranges matters a lot when you can rarely afford to have either. But in first-world cultures where food is never an issue, discussions of food among most people are superficial and usually over within a few seconds.

For most of human history, the big economic scarcity in the world was land. Because there was a limited amount of productive land - there was a limited amount of food. And because there was a limited amount of food, most day-to-day economic concerns and political squabbles involved land. Most people spent their lives contemplating what land they were going to work, what they were going to grow, what kind of harvest to expect, and so on. Food was always on the top of people’s mind.

When the industrial revolution hit, the primary scarcity was no longer land, as machines could now help cultivate more than enough food for everybody. Now the big scarcity was labor. You needed trained people to run all of these machines that did a wide variety of things, so the workers could invest it in bitcoi..- errm — food, and stuff. Thus, for a couple hundred years, the organizing principle in society was based on labor — who you worked for, how much you made, and so on.

Though in the 20th century, there was more being produced than any one person would ever need or could ever purchase. The new scarcity in society was no longer labor or land, the scarcity had now become knowledge. People had so many choices of what to purchase with their hard-earned money, but they didn’t know what to purchase. Thus, people spent most of their day-to-day existence trying to figure out what the best toothpaste was, what a toaster oven could do, how to spend their bonus money over the holidays and so on. The fields of advertising and marketing were invented and came to dominate society, as they were the means of disseminating the information people needed to allocate their resources appropriately.

Still with us? Because this is where the internet and smartphones have disrupted everything.

With the major adoption of the internet, the primary scarcity in society is no longer information. In fact, there is now more information than any of us could possibly know what to do with.

The scarcity in our world is no longer knowledge. There’s an abundance of knowledge.

The new scarcity in the internet age is attention. Since there is a surplus of information, more information flowing through our society than any of us could ever hope to process or understand, the new bottleneck on our economy is attention. We now live in an attention-based economy.

This is why we each are currently bombarded with a ton of advertising messages per day. This is why these advertisements get zanier and more nonsensical, because the goal of advertisements is no longer information but simply attention.

Our vision has and will always be centered towards our users and readers. By involving advertisers in a thoughtful manner, and linking them to readers that have a certain level of knowledge or needs, we can create a better harmony on the platform. We will also allow voting for every user / reader, they can vote to categorize articles in 3 separate categories. The author makes up for 30% of the voting, and all the readers combined make up the other 70%.

Next to the ranking, articles and courses can also be upvoted and downvoted, this will slightly reflect on the bounty reward of the creator(s) and curator(s) of the article (+1–10%) because valuable content should be rewarded. But foremost it will affect the way your article shows on the website if you search on most popular, similar to the UI of Reddit.

We plan to further research and work towards a perfect execution of the advanced attention economy within Cryptoscene together with some specific — to be disclosed — advisers from another cryptocurrency oriented project and ofcourse our own developers, but we will be actively reaching out to new developers shortly. The roadmap and Whitepaper will be incrementally updated throughout the coming weeks, with the whitepaper further going into the benefits and downsides of these changes. We aim to have a beta version of this working on the site before the end of Q3 2018, and the fully functional environment including advertisers and a functional bounty reward system based on smart contracts (Partially dependent on Neblio’s advancements in this field) in Q4.
