The known 2048 words at 128 = 2^128 and IF (and its a big if) there was a sufficently large qbit computuer, becomes  2^64 problem that is a lot more crackabble.
Why did you halve that?

On elliptic curve, a 256-bit private key provides half the security meaning 128 bits of security. But when you have an entropy for key derivation, that entropy is providing the same amount of security as its size. Meaning a 128 bit entropy provides 128 bits of security not 64.

If quantum computers eventually become practical with sufficient qubits, many classical cryptographic problems could be solved much faster. For instance:

- Shor’s algorithm, quantum computers can break ECC and RSA in polynomial time, dramatically reducing their effective security.
-Grover’s algorithm, the security of symmetric encryption schemes would effectively be halved, meaning a 128-bit symmetric key would provide only 64 bits of security against quantum attacks.

I am theorising  how you get to the specific key from 2048 known words must be easier than unknown words to get to a specific key in a key space, the entropy might be the same, but the your looking at a different sector of the key space.

The process of deriving a specific key from a constrained set of inputs, such as the 2048 known words in the BIP39 word list used for cryptocurrency wallets, may reduce the practical difficulty of a brute-force attack. Although the theoretical entropy of the system remains unchanged, the search space is effectively constrained.

Think of it like using a lightouse searchlight. If you’re looking for a target in a completely dark area, the light could shine in any direction, covering the entire 360-degree field. However, if you know the target can only be located within a specific arc—let’s say between points A and B—the searchlight doesn’t have to scan the whole field. Even though the target is still hidden, the process becomes more efficient because you’re focusing on a smaller, defined area.

Similarly, knowing that a key is derived from a deterministic process, like a BIP39 word list, limits the search to a specific subset of the key space.

Yes.

It may worth mentioning that you don't really increase your security with increasing the number words to more than 12.
A 12 word seed phrase provides the same security as a bitcoin private key.

My high level thinking - as I don't quite grok the detail is this

The known 2048 words at 128 = 2^128 and IF (and its a big if) there was a sufficently large qbit computuer, becomes  2^64 problem that is a lot more crackabble.

A 24 brings this back to 128 in these conditions.

haveing 2048 know words mean the map to a particular key space -

if you have say 1 unkown word in the mix, then the attacker is really stuck, as they have a much larger dictionary to choose from and you dont have to use a word.

So it seems to me that the space of of the private key is larger than the space of the 2048 word dictionary versions as I can map to a private key that is not int he 2048 space by using my own words or strings

look forward to being shown the error of my thinking

Re: How to use a 24 words seed phrase in Electrum Android Version?
by
jubalix
on 03/01/2025, 12:01:21 UTC
You will need to use electrum on a pc or mac in order to generate a 24 word seed. Then you can restore from seed in android. So download electrum from electrum.org on a PC or mac and then go to view menu > check console. Switch to console tab and click on the warning to make it go away. Then paste in the following command there:

Code:
make_seed(nbits=256)

Press enter and it should spit out a 24 word seed.

whats the difference between make_seed(nbits=256) and make_seed(256)

should we do seed = make_seed(nbits=128, language='english', type='segwit')

to avoid any errors or security issues?

A few questions about electrum .... I love the product

[1] is the console Consol make_seed(xxx) the same fuction and security as going through the GUI when makeing a new wallet to generate a seed?

[2] does make_seed(256) for a 24 words seed, is that as robust and safe as the defualt GUI 12 word at the begining gui for a new wallet

[3] could you use a make_seed(512) for a 48 word seed if you wanted? what are the risks

Re: Is taxation theft?
by

Is it really against your consent though? They didn't take the taxes without you knowing. Before any tax is passed or increased the public is notified. So I guess we can take the issue of theft away.

Taxation becomes wrong when it becomes extreme and when the government don't make good use of the taxes. In my opinion, taxes are like payments to the government so they'll be able to continue providing what they're supposed to provide for their citizens. Where it becomes wrong is when you pay your taxes yet don't get anything in return.

Taxing gains from cryptocurrencies is extreme to me too and I agree that it crosses the line. In that case, we can say that they're overstepping. The fact that they're in charge of the citizens of their country doesn't mean the citizens should have no power over themselves. They should have a right to privacy.

So if other people vote for it they can come and take your house off you?

government CAN NEVER make good use of the taxes, becuase they are not aligned with the market, but the politcal cycle.

Where ever you are forced to buy, give or aquire something rather of your free will, yes that is theft.

Gov forces you to give them $$$$ or they use violence against you, so thats theft.

Re: A new milestone for Bitcoin. Today it breaks $100,000!

Another milestone.  The same type of people saying "it's a ponzi/tulips/dead" haven't change since well under a dollar in 2010 and dollar parity in 2011. $30, $100, $1000, $10,000, $20,000 etc.

Several minutes ago, Bitcoin after many days of delays, hits $100,000 and even breaks it to about $101,000.

Is Bitcoin dead after many years of "Death" fud?
https://99bitcoins.com/bitcoin-obituaries/

The message is simple from Bitcoin performance today, it has never been death and it won die in future.

becuase they dont understand the implications of zero counterparty risk, nor the value of a clean signal which mean BTC can allocate all capital

I agree with HODL - I think a small fractional amount should be cashed to allow you to hold for longer with no real effect on total investment. This is becuase the longer you can HODL is a function of how much money you have to pay for cost of living.

Yes yes yes we all know how everyone is elated about trump's victory.
But personally I think we shouldn't get excited yet, there has been so many promises made but we all know politics and how politicians can still change overnight.

I don't think trump could have done much better given how prejudical the whole education system is in brainwashing the population over the last 40 years.

Escaping the Indoctrination Trap, the existential threat counter.
by
jubalix
on 12/11/2024, 01:27:56 UTC
BTC/Crypto is perhaps the only viable counter to leftist indoctrination of the youth, capturing the next generation.

Which implies the right's existence is only viable by supporting crypto in the strongest possible way.

[I realise this is a dichotamous argument - however that the reality of the left right divide - and the whole paradigm has shifted to the left over the decades.]

The left attracts and is populated by people with left-leaning tendencies on cultural, self-interest, and even a genetic level. Public education depends on government support and therefore must align with the government's political views to secure funding.

This shapes the minds of youth when they are young and unable to resist such political dogma.

This indoctrination only comes into question much later in life, when many realize that money, productivity, and opportunity are insufficient to support them. The level of taxation and government regulation ensures they will never get ahead. By then, they are too marginalized, old, and used up. Some may come to understand the larger reality of debt issuance's power—via quantitative easing—which compounds the erosion of their purchasing power.

This manifests in urgent questions like, 'Why am I working all week, yet my take-home pay will never allow me to buy a house?' or 'Why, after doing what "they" told me to do, do I now have massive debt, with my investments and work being heavily taxed, while bills and the cost of living keep rising without end?' It becomes stark when you cannot afford food or shelter for yourself or your children, making it clear that perhaps you've been misled at some point.

Crypto offers a means, a bright light representing the devaluation of your local unit of account. The government apparatus is so entrenched that it may take ages, if ever, for any government to dismantle it.

It must come from the ground up, where individuals have an opt-out, allowing the value of their work to be preserved.

Where the right supports this, it enables individuals to opt out of dependence on the government's indoctrination systems.

A first step would be exclusive use of non-state schools or homeschooling.

The future of the right's existence depends entirely on offering self-determination—in a tangible and practical way that people can access now.

Fractional BTC on CEX
by
jubalix
on 05/08/2024, 09:20:48 UTC
My view is and remains that most CEX btc is fractional.

Almost anyone holding since 2011 or 2013, if they were going to sell out, would have sold out since. Leaving the long erm holders in control of most BTC.
[There is only about 3M BTC on all the CEX's anyway]

This leads me to the view that there are no bulk sellers left for years, so exchnages are fractional.

Until Dex's that can prove reserves in real time become the norm and bulk of tradeing, then we will see actual price discovery.

Re: Excessive Bitcoin fees
by
jubalix
on 05/03/2024, 03:45:45 UTC
So this whole issue is a restatement of 'should we scale blocksize?'

SegWit2x was shot down. BCH market price has tanked. BSV has tanked. Though I think that is market recognition.
Bigger block size means nothing useful if people don't use that bigger-sized blockchain.

this is not apples to apples, the use of BTC is not the same as BTCCASH or BTCSV. They are different things.

A bigger block size will lower fees as supply goes up, and it achieves the origonal L1 soloution that satoshi outlines.

There was no mention of L2 or LN in the BTC white paper, but there were calculation by satoshi to show L1 could scale, by blocksize.

The people seeking to use and do use BTC is much higher than BTCCASH or BTCSV and the latter do achieve a much lower relative cost for fees.

So this who issues - is a restatment of should we scale blocksize.

segwit2x was shot down
BCH market price has tanked
BSV has tanked

Though it think that is market recognition.

I argued with LK  on this  - that there must be some g(x) where block size gets bigger as the internet gets faster and HD space get cheaper, which is has since 2010.

Satoshi's intial idea was to sacel block size and the blocks were 32mb each

The 1MB cap was instutided as stop gap measure only.

It is clear that all the high TPS and super cheap coins run into L1 centralisation issues, but normies dont get this they just want to hear TPS high and cheap.

EOS is a demostration where you could not keep up with the rate of increase of the blocks and so end up with centralisation.

DAGS - may offer some solution but I have yet to see a convinicing proof.

The imuutable fact is data costs space and energy to store.

The 1MB size does ensure that dentralisation is high, but reaches a crunch point where - minners see fees drop off.

At some point the Blocksize should increase and there is some g(x)

Where this is up for question, but when BTC does increase this - it risks loseing the narritive - to BCH or some other scheme, as BTC has commited to 1MB.

Luke JR actually advocated 1/2 MB blocks which is why I said fine but what is your g(x)?

there must be some, and a reasonable one could solve the fee issue.

Who is selling? Fractonal CEX
by
jubalix
on 12/01/2024, 23:25:06 UTC
BTC allows us to see more or less how much BTC is being traded. That vast majority of BTC is not moveing and sits off the market. About 2-3 (30%) million BTC seem to be actively traded.

On top of that, whoever sold in the repeat cycles of 2011, 2013, 2017 and 2021, have been wiped out from the market, meaning each time you just get people more commitied to holding.

So what I don't understand is Who selling, becuase there is almost no one left in BTC that is selling any significant amounts.

Are CEX's selling and dealing in fractional BTC tradeing?

I am saying is people have run out of BTC to sell. So what then is being sold?
