Version 1.5 Released. Version 1.5 is a mandatory upgrade, so please upgrade as soon as possible to avoid a fork. Version 1.5 fixes the superblock issue, making Graincoin the first coin ever to generate superblock in a truely random way. This will eliminate the hackers from getting most of the superblocks. Version 1.5 also includes some minor bug fixes. The switchover point is set at block 310000, which will be in about 5-7 days (we are at block 277100 now). Download links for Windows Client and source in github are updated.

Very good!

Grain price in serious trouble.  I worry that if there aren't more buyers and people continue to dump coins so cheap, coinedup will remove grain from the exchange.  If you were ever planning on buying more grain, I think now is the time..

I agree with you,
and, I have bought some coins,
Actually, when consider the mining gain,
Still the profitability is not bad even little bit lower than LTC coin,
but, If keep going down, it will be a trouble.

Recently, my minder start to get more GRA per day,
but, I am not happy with it, because of number of miners are goind down,

....

Did you count on that, that superblocks are giving about the same value, as it's witout them?
I mean i count with reward: 3000
Because it's 1024-2048 ~ 1500 + (0,05*8*1500)+(0,01*64*1500)= 1500+600+960 ~~ 3000

LK7, GLX, BUK, MPL, COL and others are no different than GRA. Having solo'd them all, its easy for me to see the similarities.

Some have many orphans, some are PoS only... all are very problematic. Copy n paste coins.. period.

In a sense all coins after bitcoin litecoin, ppcoin and primecoin are copy and paste coins as they bring nothing new. The question is how the coin is handled after it appeared. You have seen my short discussion with LK7's dev. Most of these clones have no ongoing support from the devs after the coin is launched. Here I found an active developer who I decided to join when he offered.

We know COL and some other are pure PoS, but GRA is both PoS and PoW, and both blocks are generating. Hope with new algorithm the diff will be behaving more reasonably.

I have to agree that PoW/PoS coins have a lot more problems than PoW only coins, but we are actively fixing issues so hopefully Grain will work fine for both PoW and PoS.

If that is really the case, then why is Peercoin, the first PoS Pow hybrid, so stable ?

Peercoin is using a different algorithm (SHA-256), and Grain and other most PoW/PoS coins you see in alt coin forum are some descendents of Novacoin.

The main reason, I think, Peercoin and Novacoin is comparably more stable, is because of its much bigger block time. Both have block time of 10 mins, as opposed to Grain, which is 30 sec. Clearly (for evident reasons), the more the block time, the more stable the network will be. Fast block time creates a lot of challenges, such as orphans, stability of blockchain etc.

That's a good point. So than, it may be a wise decision if instead of halving the block reward the first time, double the block time, so it would be 1 min (allowing the POS to scatter, if i'm right).

Whatever the POW extender value will be, the only what matters, that IT HAS TO BE on the information sheet about the coin. Thats's it. This is the only problem.

It's a factor which miners have to know about:
block time, net hashrate, [POW block time extender]-----> difficulty, block value ---> coin price

Than will be more miners again. X4 would be good, cause than it's easy to calculate (2 min blocks). And a bit better for early miners,  than X3, i guess Smiley

(actually, it corrupts net hashrate stat also, but it's not a problem:
1. calculate with the actual block time:  30 sec X extender value
or
2. calculate with lowered hashrate: net hashrate / extender value

You will get the same result, i think, so it would be clear for miners.)

One possible way to solve the PoW block time too long issue is to decrease the max allowed PoW block time, which is currently set at 12X normal time. This means due to the generation of PoS blocks, the PoW block time can be extended to 12X normal time (of course when PoS generation decreases, the PoW block time will decrease and go back to target time). The PoW target time extension is needed in order to maintain the overall block target time.

We could decrease the max allowed PoW block to 3X normal time. Actually I noticed that Novacoin did this patch many months after they launched the coin. We could do the same. This will make the delay of the PoW less significant. However, this will require another hard fork, which is why I am reluctant to do. If the community thinks this is needed, I can make the changes.

Again, the PoS issues I discussed before the release of Version 1.3. Please refer to it (link below) and understand the pros and cons of the PoS blocks.

I think the fair value for POW block time extender would be 1X. But if, 3X is the down limit, we should go 4X, to have difference. But this info should be stated in OP/official site.

Send, all your money to yourself(same wallet), than you will get less (1 big in 10-15 days) POS blocks. That would help to decrease diff. untill its fixed...

A lot of people did small transactions from pool. Thoose coins have different coin age, generating a lot tiny POS blocks...
