Has anyone else been getting a lot of hash rate drops this month?

One of these downtimes was planned, the rest I can't explain. Some of them can't be seen in the monthly graph because I caught them quickly enough. cgminer just stops hashing and never starts again.

Re: Netflix will be the next one

Netflix' collection is shrinking as content owners revoke their permissions and seek to monetize their libraries by cutting deals directly with ISPs or using their own distribution channels (for example "HBO To Go"). Netflix has become a glorified middle man and now that digital downloads are displacing physically mailed DVDs, they no longer have a market advantage.

Hence why they're moving on to original programming (House of Cards, Arrested Development). If those catch on, perhaps Netflix will survive, though it likely won't stay as predominant as it currently it.

To enable this, the blockchain uses a merkle tree to organize the transaction records in such a way that client software can locally delete portions of its own database it knows it will never need, such as earlier transaction records of Bitcoins that have changed ownership multiple times.

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Bitcoin#Confirmations

AFAIK, however, this is still unimplemented in the main Bitcoin client. But at least a solution is known.

The feds could just use their super computers for a few hours to hash out the required amount...lol. Livermore and oakridge should do the trick, right?

Are you serious? That would just make the difficulty jump. It would still take 100000 / (5 * 6 * 24) = 13.8 days assuming they have near-100% of the hashing strength.

If someone had >50% hashing power, they couldn't just start rewarding themselves more than 50 BTC, as those blocks would be rejected by honest nodes. No?

Having >50% hashing power doesn't let someone change the rules; that requires >50% of all nodes to agree.

I've used them twice so far with no problems. The only negative is that their prices don't get adjusted for rising Bitcoin value as fast as I'd like.

I'm basically a utilitarian, which I don't see listed. "The Moral Landscape" presents some good arguments.

What happened here is the equivalent of someone storing a suitcase full of cash in a rented garage and then wanting to sue the garage owner because he didn't install armored doors.

I'd say it's more like storing a suitcase full of cash in a rented garage and then wanting to sue the garage owner because the locks he puts on the garages don't actually work ("if you yank on it hard it just comes off!"), and so someone came and and stole your cash.

Hold on...is there even any oil in Iran?

Can't tell if serious or not, but Iran has an estimated fourth largest supply of oil, and second largest supply of natural gas. If you combine these, it's the most abundant source of hydrocarbons in the world. The US's issue with Iran is over theater dominance (the real reason we don't want them to have a nuke) and privileged access to energy resources (which we're competing with China for.)

Ah, I've been looking at the 15-minute interval chart. I think this may be a false crossover, unless the volume starts increasing. There also seems to be little support above $6.20.

Impending crossover... steady now boys.

I'm looking for it but I can't find the crossover. Could you link to a chart showing what you mean?

5870 just dropped ~30 Mhash/s after reboot. 11.6 drivers?
by
kinghajj
on 16/06/2011, 18:52:48 UTC
I'm mining on Linux with latest phoenix miner. Previously overclocking to 900 MHz got me ~370 Mhash/s, but I just rebooted (for reasons unrelated to mining), overclocked again with atioc, and started mining, but now only get ~340 Mhash/s. I just upgraded to the 11.6 drivers last night, but maybe I hadn't rebooted then and so was still using the 11.5 ones.

EDIT: I just saw that the "trayer" and "X" processes were using way too much CPU. Killing trayer got the 30 Mhash/s back.
