Re: Bitmain Antminer S9 Troubleshooting Blank Hardware Version

Got the same problem on 1 S9 from batch 21-30 november, with APW3+ PSU.

bminer not found....

I tried different firmwares:
- fixed frequency 550MHz
- autofreq from August 15

I did several soft and hard reboots of the miner. It finally worked but I really don't know why.

That seems totally random.

If Bitmain could explain what's going on that'd be great

Hey,

I'm the dev of thehalvening.com. I've just noticed this thread, thanks for all the nice comments!  Cheesy

Just to answer a few questions:

"Total number of bitcoins:" , are those real stats ? It seems like it's simply increasing and counting , I don't think it's correct .
"Total number of bitcoins": the value is not totally accurate since new bitcoins only come when a block is found. But we wanted to give a sense of the increase rate and it's easier to visualize it with a continuous evolution!

Hey, maybe it's me but I'm on Firefox and on the last part if I click to have the details of the question is make some weird effect with the text :/
@Laosai: It seems you have trouble with the text animation. What version of Firefox are you using?

another clock shows 129 days http://www.bitcoinblockhalf.com/ versus this that show 137, and another one show 137 like this one, so i guess the first that i saw is wrong

@Amph: Well all of these dates are estimates, no one can tell the exact date because it depends on mining activity! Our countdown is based on a 10-min block generation time, which is Bitcoin network target

Feedback is very much welcome, cheers!

With my S7 it's working fine. HW went down big time

@beffje, thanks for posting this.

What's the input air temperature that gets you to 60°C? And how unpleasant is the fan noise at that speed (~2200RPM)?

not @beffje, but
it is only unpleasant at ~3900 rpm for my ears.
I would say that if you can get a S7 safely to 2200, then you will be surprised how little sound comes out of it (it is much less than S3, which was good).

Thanks

Less than the S3? Sounds almost to good to be true!
I have no choice but running the miner a few meters from my working desk, so the noise level is kind of critical... The S5 was a monster, I had to mount quieter fans but then it got hard to cool. Ambient air had to be ~20°C to keep the miner below 60°C.

How about the noise from APW3 PSU advertised by Bitmain?

With the summer hotness I was tired of continuously adjusting my S5 frequency, so I decided myself to dive into shell coding and wrote a small script to do it automatically.
Cool (pun intended).  If you have a donation address, should drop it in your blog post Smiley

Right, thanks for the tip! (pun also intended)

Hi,

With the summer hotness I was tired of continuously adjusting my S5 frequency, so I decided myself to dive into shell coding and wrote a small script to do it automatically.

I'm pretty happy with what I got: every 20 minutes the script checks the temp sensors, increase or decrease the frequency and restarts cgminer. Thus I keep the temp between 58 and 62 °C at all time.

If you're interested you can download the script on github: https://github.com/kmitz/Regul
Installation notes are on my blog: https://jomcflyatwork.wordpress.com/

You can ask me questions in this thread or PM me for help.

  Cheers!

NB: If you worry about my script stealing all your coins, just check the script, it's only 40 lines and very straightforward:
1)read temp
2)write new frequency in /config/cgminer.conf
3)restart cgminer

@suchmoon @Biodom
Thanks! I connected the 2 PCIe cables, up to now it seems to work great. I'll do a temperature check tomorrow.

Now I have to make this fanmod before the wife starts to beat me up.... :p

i did not dare to run it at default for more than 12 hr...
Everyone seem to be particularly affected by the S5 default fan sound. You want to stay as far away as possible.
what's your mod?

I replaced the loud stock fan by two 120mm fans I had in spare. The fans are in push-pull configuration and powered directly from the PSU (constant speed).
It makes my S5 really quiet, about the same as my desktop computer. But I had to downclock to 250MHz (~800GH/s) to keep the temp below 60°C.

So at this point I loose 30% of hashing power to reach an acceptable sound level..
Next step I'll try more powerful fans with the "fan shroud" trick mentioned by dog1965 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=908494.msg10250546#msg10250546

I also noticed a big spread between the 2 temp sensors... Any idea what it could be??

Sorry for the noob question:

I'm setting up my freshly arrived S5. Power supply is Corsair rm750.

I keep reading everywhere (http://www.enthusiastpc.net/articles/00002/3.aspx) that maximum power output is 75W for 6pin connectors and 150W for 8 pin connectors.
How can the S5 draw ~500W using 4x6PCIe providing 75W each?
And can I power it with 2 cables of the type 1x8PCIe -> 2x6PCIe?

Thanks

just letting people know, Zoomhash still has the s5's selling at $325 with cc, paypal and bitcoin as a payment option. will prob change fast but thought I'd let yah know. I don't work for them, just noticed they are the cheapest I've found right now

Thanks for the tip! I just ordered one S5 on Zoomhash. I checked here and there if they were legit...seems ok.

Finally didn't turn out well... My order for one S5
got cancelled 2 days after payment. Got an email from Zoomhash saying they don't have enough stock. But they debited my account anyway!
Now I'm nervously waiting for the refund...
Bad first experience in the mining world.

Edit: A least I'm not alone :-p

Wanted to contriboot.
The stock fan is only good for sending small Craft into low earth orbit.
I'm using 3pin corsair sp120 running full speed off a molex to 6 x 3pin fan board for the push and an af120 @ full speed from the same board. I think the onboard pwm is shit
Now I live in Australia and it's summer so ambient temperature is around 30*c and often up to 40*c and my s5 is running at 55*c just slightly underclocked to keep it there.

Much happier with that.

What do you mean by "6 x 3 pin fan board"? The fans are not powered by the S5 itself?
