Hi I am interested but i have a few questions 1. Someone earns storjcoins based on the amount of the available GB he has on his hard drive? 2. Can this be an empty external hard drive? 3. How many storj per 1gb at the moment? 4. People store data on my hard drive. Are those data backed up anywhere else? What will happen if I decide to turn off my hard drive? Will people lose their data?
Thanks
1.) you will get paid for space that is utilized not simply offered 2.) sure it could be a floppy disk if you wanted 3.) at the moment 0 4.) you would loose the contract for the redundant copy of the shard you are storing. That copy would then be replicated from one of the other nodes storing the copy
quick question, since i dont understand this well.
The nodes are people that are going to give space of the hard drive, so the net puts the file encrypted in them, right? how much does someone gets pay? Imagine i have a 4 TB HDD, i want to know where i can see the , earnings of putting that in storj, by month
Sorry if it is a noob question.
edit: i found this http://driveshare.org/ but it says i will earn, like for 1TB, some services gives me 60 dolares each month? o.O is that real what im reading???
The calculator is showing major services pricing. As simply offering space does not guarantee utilization you will be paid for the space you have that is utilized. Until the network is live it will be very challenging to give accurate predictions
The DriveShare whitepaper is listed as 'coming soon' on the storj.io website...-thumbsup-
Noob question. In the Metadisk whitepaper, it is stated that copies of data will be stored in three separate locations in line with current industry redundancy standards. In the Storj whitepaper, it is stated data will be broken down into byte multiples such as 8 MB or 32 MB. It is also stated that a "farmer must be able to prove cryptographically that it has the shard, and has not modified it in any way." What are the chances of a malicious actor 'damaging' all three shards and destroying the data?
I also noticed that the Storj whitepaper is co-written by Ethereum's Vitalik Buterin. Personal contribution or is Ethereum involved with the project?
The malicious actor would need to given all three redundant copies simultaneously. This is only likely if there is only 1 drive share farmer
People would need to keep their computers on for this to work right? What if you need to access your data and they turned their computer off? Great idea though, I'm excited to see how this turns out.
I imagine people would have an incentive to leave their computers on 24/7 to earn more. I know I certainly will. I also imagine that file storage would have redundancy for safety reasons.
you need to leave your computer running. storj uses "heartbeats" to check the status of a node. If a node drops (ie you turn off your server), it will seek out another node to copy the file you hosted, then it will end your contract. It does this so 3 copies (minimum) of the hosted file is available online at all times. When you contract ends you will no longer be paid storj because you are no longer providing the service of hosting the encrypted files.
There's no way to resume a contract? That's a bit silly. What if I need to turn off a server for maintenance? Do I have to start a new one?
The heartbeat frequency may be set so there is time for that and some files may not need as many checks as often. Part of the reason for test group A is gathering data to figure out what is needed.
What about external drives? I have a few terabyte externals that I would love to use if its possible. I have my data up in two different places right now, but Storj seems really handy by being encrypted.
When my family bought its first computer it had a 2 GB hdd at the time I couldn't fathom filling up 2 gigs of space, yes hard drives will get cheaper but data requirements also increase.
What price range should I expect for Storj and will it be permanent too?
Prices for storing files on the Storj network will be dictated by the market (supply vs demand). Most likely they will be waaay lower than Dropbox rates.
Keep in mind that price for space is on Storj is one thing and the value of SJCX is another. Both will be controlled by the market. the valuation of SJCX will be factor into the cost of space on the Storj network.
So they're not tied together? how are they separated?
They are tied together in that sjcx is used to buy space on the network but speculators will have an effect on the value of sjcx so as price rises it will each sjcx will have to purchase more and more space on the network.

I think you meant fewer SJCX, which is the Crypto currency used by Storj.
My mistake. It's a little confusing.
No problem, I was just trying to help you out. It takes time :-) STORJX (user on the forums) has corrected me on a few things. That's how we keep it all straight. I would rather be corrected than continue to be wrong.
That's the sign of a developing community when others than devs and community leaders give out information it is great to see people getting involved and helping the new people #bethecloud.

Re: [ANN] Metadisk - Blockchain Based File Sharing - Powered by Storj
will farmers need to maintain a minimum amount of coins in order to use driveshare?
might be interesting to see what type of valuation Storj can achieve if every node required 10,000 coins to run, sort of like Darkcoin. This would help raise funds for the developers and community.
This can be even broken down based on the amount of HD Space being shared. So for every 1TB a node needs 1000 STJX. This could ensure that the people hosting aren't some hacked servers or a pentuim 286 on an unreliable internet/electricity grid.
This might also stop or hinder blackhats from using stolen storage space to run nodes, as they will have to invest in a node in order to participate.
Currently to use the software sjcx is considered a software license, however in the future that may change.
I like the having to invest to use it however that could present some issues for adoption as the 10,000 per fairly distributed would be 50,000 nodes and nobody would have and sjcx to buy space on the network.
Keep coming with great ideas! #bethecloud
I thought the 10,000 SJCX to be involved in Test Group C was just to rise barrier and have the parties show active interest in the technology. I didn't think that was going to be an on going requirement. As you noted that would limit the number of nodes to 50,000 and remove all SJCX from the market place.
There is nothing written one way or another regarding that. Storj also reserves the right to future crowdsales so there could be some rewards as far as access to future crowdsales. Time will tell.

I think sjcx will have and maintain value, yes storage gets cheaper over time however with a foxed supply of sjcx each one will have to purchase more space on the network

Factom Use Case - Protecting Sony Pictures with Blockchain Technology
Watch how Blockchain Technology can protect Sony Pictures using Factom and Storj.
what's the relationship about Factom and Storj? any link?
Storj will eventually use factom to store metadata of files on the bitcoin blockchain, if you look at the Whitepaper this is currently being done on its own with florincoin, https://storj.io/storj.pdf

I think a great case for Driveshare will be people running the software on anything with a hard drive, nobody will know woth storj that your really a refrigerator #bethecloud
I'm sorry, but I do not understand. Why do I have to buy 10,000 SJCX to take part in tests?
Agreed, I had been looking forward to this program for a few months. I had signed up on their forums and got in on a small SJCX giveaway. Then, I get this email from them that to participate you need 10k SJCX coins, which was like 2btc or something the other day. They tried to say that to participate in the program a few month ago, you had to deposit more counterpoint currency, I complained and I got an email reply that said they wouldn't ask for money to participate. I don't mind putting in a little bit to cement a bit a commitment, but not that much invested into SJCX. Crowdsale or not, if you want people to buy in, drop that level. Maybe 100 sjcx... not 10k. Come on guys, lower that requirement.
Sorry I was not clear, we held a crowdsale in which 910 BTC was raised at the time 1 BTC purchased 38,500 SJCX, The crowdsale participants have always been the ones that will get access to the software first. To differentiate who within the crowdsale should get first access a limit of 10,000 SJCX was set to differentiate two groups of crowdsale participants. So we have given these people the first access followed by the rest of the crowdsale participants. Then after them we have it set up currently that Group C will be those that have supported the project by holding SJCX will be in test group C.

P.S. I'm aware this post is probably going to be immediately flamed as an obvious scam, but frankly we're not worried about that. It's a totally real opportunity but only appropriate for a select few who can understand it, who can evaluate it properly and thoroughly by themselves before making a "go or no go" decision on it for themselves, and who can handle the personal responsibility issues of participation. The reward is great for those who can make the cut, and we don't much care about the opinions or flames of those who can't make the grade. So go ahead and have fun flaming away in public if that's how you roll, haha, and leave the capable and open minded individuals to just PM me for more details in private.
I'm listening though skeptical
