Re: World's First Bitcoin Lawsuit - Cartmell v. Bitcoinica
by

on 04/07/2013, 05:20:21 UTC
I knew my odds of getting any of the 150+ bitcoins I had in bitcoinica (just sitting there, not in any position) were always low and ever decreasing, but I'm assuming this lawsuit means that the chances of me getting any of that back have dropped to essentially zero.  That was a lot easier to shrug off when they were trading for $4.something a pop.

Re: WARNING! Bitcoin will soon block small transaction outputs
by
legitnick
on 04/07/2013, 05:18:49 UTC
The more people who run a full node, the greater the decentralization[1][2].

Using the chain as data storage, rather than currency, costs everybody, because it increases the rate at which people are discouraged from running full nodes.  It increases the costs of that dataset that cannot be pruned, and must be carried for eternity: the unspent transaction output set (UTXO), the list of coins available for spending.

Right now, it remains within the realm of a hobbyist to run a full node, especially with the recent memory usage improvements in bitcoind.  But one day, that will not be the case.

By pushing back on data spam, we reduce the rate-of-increase on blockchain resource costs, and reduce the disincentive to run a full node.  We push back the day at which there are just a handful of archive nodes with a copy of the full block chain.

! 5 Bitcoin Independence Day Raffle ! -SCAM PHISH-
by
legitnick

MOD NOTE: SCAMMER/PHISHER

*Note to Mods* Approved by John K. to keep in General Discussion.

5 BITCOIN INDEPENDENCE DAY RAFFLE

W     elcome fellow Bitcoiners to my 5 Bitcoin Independence day raffle!!! There will be 10 winners who will recieve equal shares of the 5 Bitcoins.  Raffle will be held five days from the start of giveaway on Independence Day, July 4th.

Before I get into the details on the giveaway, id like you all to know a little about myself,  Back in 2010 I first heard of Bitcoin while in a passing conversation with a co-employee. This "online anonymous currency" sounded interesting to me. I was having issues setting up my wallet when I entered a bitcoin IRC chat room for help.

After explaining my problem I was pleasantly surprised by the outpouring of help I received from members in the chat room.
One guy who went by the name of "kjwallet" took his time and worked me through my problem, then was kind enough to send me 30 bitcoins. After that event, I made a promise to myself that one day I would give back to the community in full.

This generous act further convinced me that the bitcoin community is truly something special. As I began to scour these forums my interest in Bitcoin grew. What especially captivated my attention was the posts from "Satoshi". Back then he used to post frequently about upcoming updates as well as his hopes and expectations for the currency. His posts sold me on the idea and I bought over 3500 Bitcoins at less then a dollar each.

It wasn't long until my investment in Bitcoin began to pay off. Before I knew it the price per coin was 7$, I sold just enough to make back my initial investment and kept the rest to save for five years down the road. It is my belief that if Bitcoin succeeds we will see the prices massively higher in the years to come. I encourage you all to do the same!

Now lets talk about the giveaway Smiley

This giveaway will stay true to the word, there will be no adding stuff to your signature, or clicking on links.
All you have to do is post on this thread and your name will be entered into the raffle. After the five day period is reached I will use a list randomizer (http://www.random.org/lists/) that will chose the 10 winning participants. Each winning member will receive .5 BTC!

I will be extending this giveaway to allow new members to take part. If you have not yet reached the four hours logged in send me a pm and I will add you to the raffle list. To prevent, or at least cut down on multiple account entries I ask that you have at least 10 activity to take part.

RAFFLE ENTRY: *Include Forum Name In Raffle Entry Post*

Example:

*forum name*

(whatever you wanna say Cheesy)

I dont want to have to go through a ton of posts and constantly check if the person double posted. So adding your name will be a lot easier for me. If your posting more then once on this thread do not include your name in the post or I will consider it double posting and you will have to be disqualified.

My hope is that this giveaway will bring some much needed fun to the forums, and offer a exciting chance to earn free bitcoins for newbies, and veterans alike.

I wish you all the best of luck!

Re: Why are some international payment companies not allowing Americans to join?
by
legitnick
on 29/06/2013, 14:44:00 UTC
I tried to sign up for several payment companies so I could fund my BTC-e account, and each one said that US Citizens accounts will be deleted.
Why are international companies doing this?
Is the US Government trying to disrupt the movement of money?

Out of all the replies I read on this thread, no one has answered correctly. The reason online payment companies like Neteller do not allow US citizens is because the law in US is greatly different then the rest of the world.

US has recently passed a bill requiring all online payment processors including paypal to verify every individual that uses the service in order to extort IRS money out of you.

Re: LTC possibilities, $25 + 1/4 of BTC ?
by
legitnick
on 29/06/2013, 03:16:48 UTC
I am new to the forum, but have been invested in BitCoin before it was worth $5 each.

I am a supporter of LTC as well.
What are your aspirations, concerns or thoughts on LTC over the next year?

LTC being the only valuable alt. at this time to BTC, and only improving on some of BTC's flaws, I see no reason for LTC to be a quarter of BTC's value, $25 atleast.
Im not saying LTC follows BTC because it does not, Ive seen BTC go down as LTC went up and vice versa..... With LTC heading to MtGox, it will get into a more populated market and outreach to more people in the crypto community which will also help drive the price up, we know this. But we should also focus on mining and getting invested in LTC, getting it now while it's cheap, it'll surely make us all some money in the near future.

LTC's price does follow the price of BTC. There are rare occasions where it may not, but it will not last long. So it doesnt matter to much what you invest in, LTC or BTC, they will both succeed or fail together.

Re: Let's show them what Bitcoin can do.
by
legitnick
on 29/06/2013, 03:12:11 UTC
With this new nLockTime microtransaction update coming in bitcoinj it will allegedly allow unlimited microtransactions with no fees to accumulate until one large transaction is submitted by a vendor. If this is correct, then Bitcoin will become the fastest and most powerful financial network anywhere. Let's use it, acquire statistics, and prove that Bitcoin can process the world's transactions with speed and efficiency.

This is great news. I heard about this earlier also, but dont think its going to be a big of a change in speed and efficiency as it is now. We will have to see though, a boost to Bitcoins speed is something definitely high on the need to do list.

Does King James have a wallet we can send bitcoin tips to?
[/quote

I highly doubt he has a wallet address, the amount of press we would get if someone succesfully donated 10,000$ in bitcoins to Lebron James would be awesome. A good way to build Bitcoins popularity is getting celebrities to start accepting it!

Like another person pointed out, Lebron James is already mega rich, in fiat. He probably has no desire for Bitcoins, or to see them become successful. You can only dream..

Re: Bitcoin Farm
by
legitnick
on 29/06/2013, 03:04:37 UTC
Having re-read Animal Farm, it occurred to me that it's actually an allegory about Bitcoin!  Help me complete the correspondence table:

Snowball       = Satoshi
Napoleon       = Gavin
The Windmill   = Bitcoin-Qt source code
Attack dogs    = THE bitcoin Foundation's lobbyists and lawyers.
Farmer Jones   = Ben Bernanke
Squealer       = Erik Voorhees
Old Major      = Diffie + Merkle
Boxer          = all code contributors who aren't "CORE"
Benjamin       =
Crow           = Luke Dashjr
The cat        = Zhoutong
The Sheep      = bitcointalk.org
Molly          = Bruce Wagner?
The hens       = miners?
Muriel         =

Unallocated: FINCEN, MtGox/Karpeles, Bill Cosby, Butterfly Labs.

Lol! This is great. I dont see how the similarity is between animal farm and bitcoin is I mean dont they become communists in Animal Farm?

Great article. Bitcoin has a ton of advantages over the dollar. For one, it isnt linked to any nation and can be used and exchanged anywhere in the world.

Tourists say in Uganda are going to find it a whole lot easier to buy some Bitcoins online, then exchange them for the currency of the country their visiting from localbitcoins or from the Bitcoin ATM's were going to start seeing a lot more of.

Re: Cosmic Currency: PayPal and SETI Developing Space Cash System
by

on 28/06/2013, 18:22:24 UTC
Perhaps something bitcoin is ideally suited for:

http://www.space.com/21739-paypal-galactic-seti-space-tourism-payment.html

I can imagine problems with blockchain forking though if the distance between the two locations is so great that signals will take 10+ minutes to travel and mining occurs at both locations.

Bitcoin is already the solution for this. Looks like paypal is trying to one up Bitcoin again.

lol, this idea is really out there and looking way into the future maybe 100-150 years down the road.

I dont see us having to worry about space currencys any time soon.

Re: Bitcoin ATM: any news after San Diego?
by
legitnick
on 28/06/2013, 18:08:26 UTC
The problem is that all the companies developing Bitcoin ATMs are located in a country that will never allow such a machine to exist.

Once some companies in Asia take up the task it will probably go from drawing board to street corner in a much shortly time.

Last time I checked China was still "Communist" I dont see the chinese government allowing bitcoin ATM's as it takes money out of their own state currency.

In the United States there is no law against a bitcoin atm so its not the countries fault.

It seems like not enough people are using the ATM's then expected.
