Looking for Bitcoins from long ago
by

I've been out of this game for over two years, but with the hype, I decided to check it out. I loaded up my wallet and I saw that I had made an outgoing transfer in July 2011, to what I believe is some sort of BTC exchange (possibly Tradehill). I couldn't find any more info, but I saw that the transaction in question was made to a wallet that two hours later made a large transfer to two different wallets (and that transfer was a very round number, whereas my transfer was not). These are the only transfers that the other wallet has made. What sort of entity would this sort of behavior correspond to? (i.e. could I figure out if a certain wallet address corresponds to an exchange?) Thanks in advance.

Re: 2x6970 rig runs extremely loud and hot

Try this :

to get fan speed for card 0
export DISPLAY=:0.0; aticonfig --pplib-cmd "get fanspeed 0"

to get fan speed for card 1
export DISPLAY=:0.1; aticonfig --pplib-cmd "get fanspeed 0"

to set fan speed for card 0 to 50%
export DISPLAY=:0.0; aticonfig --pplib-cmd "set fanspeed 0 50"

aticonfig claims that I changed the fan speed, but it is still the same loudness. And I don't believe any other fans are to blame. Also, the old fan speed appears again after a restart.

2x6970 rig runs extremely loud and hot

I have a dual 6970 rig that I just got. It runs incredibly loud and very hot, able to heat up a whole room very easily. Is there a way I could step down the fan speeds so it doesn't sound like a WWII-era fighter plane?

I'm on Ubuntu by the way.

Google killing Adsense accounts on Bitcoin-related sites
by

Just had an Adsense account of mine get shut down, although it was only making me pennies. I've heard/seen of this happening to others too who ran Bitcoin-related websites. Has this happened to anyone else?

Possibility of a difficulty decrease soon?
by
lessPlastic
on 27/06/2011, 02:12:47 UTC
With all of these increases, only those with the most efficient rigs will be able to profit with mining under the current price. Due to this, mining levels should drop off, and eventually we should see a decrease in difficulty. How possible is this?

Conversion issue:

Entered: $1.
Convert: 0.066 BTC.
Convert back to $: 0.997.

Entered: $1.01.
Convert: 0.067 BTC.
Convert back to $: 1.013

It's realtime - this behavior is due to the quotes changing between the times you convert. It's AJAX, so it pulls the new last price with every conversion, not page refresh.

To everyone else: I got the site back up, thank you for letting me know it was down. It was a scripting error Tongue

Bitcoinvert.com - Dead Simple Bitcoin Currency Calculator

This is a utility I made recently for the community. Just thought a few people here would find it handy in these times of BTC volatility! Please let me know if you have any feedback on the site.

Does anyone else think it really hit the fan lately?
by

on 17/06/2011, 04:32:41 UTC
Bitcoins were at $9 not too long ago. All of a sudden, they hit 19, then 24, then topped out at 30, where people consider there to be a mini- or not mini- bubble. Right when this happened, all of the hacking began, there began rumors of giant hash farms being brought online, senators started to discuss it, and it seems like our community quadrupled in size. All in a short period of time. Anyone else think so?

When will we finally get GUI Mac OS X/*nix Clients?
by

on 17/06/2011, 04:28:48 UTC
As fun as it is to run things from the command line, it'd be much more user-friendly (as well as easier to bring up new machines) if there was a GUI frontend to poclbm and/or phoenix-miner for the OS X/*nix platforms. Are there any in development?

Re: Mining rigs "after Bitcoin"
by
lessPlastic
on 17/06/2011, 04:24:13 UTC
Guys, please learn the way Bitcoin works, this thing is discussed to death. As long as Bitcoin will be a viable currency (which, as things look now, seems to be a REALLY long time) mining will exist. Mining doesn't only mint new coins and puts them in circulation, as most people here seem to think. It also verifies transactions and secures the network. If mining is done with, Bitcoin is done with. They won't exist one without the other. Also, miners don't get money from discovered blocks only. They receive the fees from transactions inside discovered blocks. This will more or less compensates the loss in income from reducing rewards over the years.

So the only way "after Bitcoin" exists is if Bitcoin dies. Which, hopefully, won't happen. And seeing the momentum it gains, this becomes more unlikely with each day passing.

So you're saying that mining will still make money after all of the coins are mined out? How will this compare to current profits?

Could a top end graphics card from 2000 even do 0.1 Mh/s? Even good cards from a few years back are doing 20 Mh/s.

Will there realistically be another major advance in mining before we finish up?

I'm talking as major as it was to switch from CPU to GPU. Will there realistically be any such advance before we mine out all the BTC?
