Re: [ANNOUNCE] Micro-payment channels implementation now in bitcoinj

Impressive work guys!  Watching Mike's 2012 talk on youtube was what really got me excited about bitcoin again and I'm glad to see such amazing progress in making these concepts a reality.

I'd be delighted if someone could elaborate on how things change once transaction replacement is turned back on.  From what I've gleaned there's a risk of the refund transaction being modified and broadcasted but I don't understand how this could happen before the locktime and without the server resigning the inputs.  What exactly is the caveat with this implementation and transaction replacement?

Maybe take a peek at the Bits of Proof Enterprise Server.  Stores the blockchain in the JPA compliant database of your choice.

Interesting concept and perhaps it will become viable with some more thinking.  At this stage though I think there is still a chink in the armor.  As everyone has already agreed there is a necessity to limit to one address per person.  This is difficult enough, but there is still an issue even with this guard in place - just because you can't spend to yourself doesn't mean you can't spend back-and-forth with your friends.

Your concept kinda sounds like demurrage flipped on it's head but I wonder if this really yields any additional benefits.  Even if you could solve the aforementioned problems, would this idea introduce value above and beyond something like Freicoin?  Demurrage may feel icky because money is slowly 'lost', but for most people the indirect economic effects will easily surpass this cost and it doesn't require difficult to enforce constraints on it's users.

I'd like to advocate for a timed 10-15 minute multiple choice test on topics involving Bitcoin and related technologies.

My timely escape from this newbie prison has been frustratingly hindered by a genuine and uncontrollable apathy for most any topic in here, and as a result I've found it curiously difficult to reach the paltry 5-post requirement.  Really, the newbie restriction is probably doing more harm than good to a rapidly growing community like this one.  People get here excited about Bitcoin, usually spending most of their time reading until they eventually find a reason to post, but then, alas, the tragedy.  There's got to be a quicker way to vet that people are literate before letting them converse with the general population.

Re: Best Altcoin

I think a lot of these altcoins offer improvements, but nothing on the order necessary to rival Bitcoin.  Litecoin, for example, offers a target blocktime of 2.5 minutes and the use of Scrypt which obviates the disruptive influence of GPU, FPGA, and ASIC mining.  These are both seemingly nice things in a cryptocurrency, and whatever supersedes Bitcoin may choose implement them, but there will need to be something radically new and innovative that compels consumers and merchants to actually convert their holdings, change wallets, etc.  Until then, why diffuse our efforts with all these carbon-copy altcoins when we have Bitcoin?  It's not perfect but it's the only one growing with enough momentum to have any kind of meaningful adoption anytime soon.  Alts like Freicoin, Namecoin, and Occcu are the exception, and as projects which are taking big strides in new directions I think there's every reason to be interested. Very cool!  Sounds like you guys have a lot of expertise in the area which could make you competitive quickly.  Not knowing much about hardware architecture I wonder how this would be scaled to higher speeds.  You mention you mostly do small quantity production so you'd probably be thinking of making more powerful more expensive rigs, as opposed to cheaper high volume ~500MH/s USB sticks?  Also, are you guys in a position to make the whole product or do you just do integrated circuits?

Satoshi abducted?

Newb here - just wondering if anyone's suspected foul play in Satoshi's disappearance.  I think most people assume he vanished because he didn't want the spotlight, and a smaller group of people wonder whether he is indeed the pyramid scheme mastermind they've been warned about.  As the creator of a technology so potentially disruptive as Bitcoin I imagine he'd definitely be the target of some ultra-powerful banking syndicate, if you're inclined to believe such things.  Anyone know any of the details surrounding Satoshi's disappearance?

Hi all,
First let me say what a great forum.  Lot's of quality discussion going on in here that's for sure.  As a developer I've been interested in Bitcoin tech for awhile but only recently became reengaged with all this recent fanfare.  What's happening with the price right now is interesting but I'm mostly curious about the future direction of Bitcoin and new applications built on the blockchain.

Delighted to make your acquaintance!
