Re: [ANN] Sia - Decentralized Storage - Working Beta - Currency has been released

Careful - there needs to be a VERY explicit way to enable renewing, or people may accidentally spend Sia they didn't mean to.

What is more important: lost files or pay accidentally for renewing?

Sia's renewing system could be based on spending account dedicated only to spending sia for automatic files renewing. More important thing is to be alerted when spending account is running low --> I will lost my files.

This could be like dropbox with credit system, I have sia -> I have files. No sia -> no files.

"Sia money = time for files". How much time do I have for my uploaded files based on my spending account. When I upload more files it will show me less time.

Then you can limit life of the files by simply limit funds in spending account.

I just saw that www.copy.com is testing CudaDrive Beta where cloud storage will create Disk Drive and not just folder.

It would be great to have simple "Sia Drive (S:)" and some credit (SC coins) in my account. Then when I copy something to this Drive it will simple deduct some SC from my account.

What is next step for Sia from user point of view?

The point of Sia is to be a back-end, high-speed, dirt cheap, decentralized, secure database. At least that's why I'm pursuing the technology.

I know and it is great. However Sia or some pioneer must start with first application for end users.

If somebody would like to create "Sia Drive (S:)" app instead of folder, would it be possible to start now in this direction?

Will we have some hub with programs using sia?

with a in wallet payment system i mean, users should be able to buy and sell sias in wallet without an exchange. you could implement a small marketplace for users to buy and sell sia via paypal for example.

think about a normal users. he downloads the app, want to place some files. now he has to learn crypto currencys, has to learn how to use exchanges, has to learn how to buy bitcoins, has to learn how to transfer bitcoins to exchanges, has to learn selling bitcoins for sias, has to learn withdrays sias into sia wallet... to complicated. without a easy solution for this, this will be only a plaything for techies.

PayPal for Sia direct purchase would be great and very important! The "how to" queue is really crazy for somebody who wants only see how good and usable Sia is and then maybe consider move from old cloud system or not.

how to:
1) find fiat <--> BTC exchange
2) send Proof of Identity
3) send Proof of Residence
4) find BTC <--> altcoins exchange
5) start using password manager for the first time
6) how to transfer BTC to exchanges
7) learn selling BTC for Sia
8 ) learn withdraw Sia into Sia wallet
9) finally try sia

It is not Sia's fault but this is really extremely complicated once I see it in one place.

I would like to give humble my opinion on something.

I think it would be good to have the wallet by its single denomination of SIA rather than KS. Or both options would be fine too.

It just would feel more marketable to offer a GB of storage for 13 Sia rather than 0.01317 KS. I am sure that development has more important things to do right now but these details can matter.

I see it this way too. Much more complicated to think in KS than simple in SIA. This way every new user would have to ask about KS to be sure.

Why don't make sia available in Nxt AE when exchange implementation is little more complicated?

Shapeshift.io would be great for Sia. Now it has an app. It is fast, simple and without registration. StorjX is there - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=702602.msg11576014#msg11576014

Maybe if you summarise redemption steps in one place, it could help too:

1) download address generator
2) how to generate address
3) length of the new address (nobody wants to send only half)
4) how can I double check that I have correct address
5) I need to keep the address as a text or generated file too?
6) send sianotes with some exact text message?
7) the message must be encrypted?

There is nothing wrong with using a very long password to encrypt the wallet file which would most certainly add to security.

Ok, thank you for info. Is there some length limit for wallet password? It will be generated anyway so 100 or 200 characters is the same work for a person. I don't want to end up with trimmed length of my password without knowing it.

if you are unsure about any of the technical stuff, please read this guide before doing anything.
http://blog.nem.io/getting-started-with-nem/

it explains some very important stuff and also shows how you are supposed to import your account to get your nem. if anyone says they are unsure what to do, post that link.

Very clear and informative.

Are acceptable all three ways for good backup:

A) display and copy Private Keys of all of my accounts from wallet in text form?
B) send funds from all secondary accounts to the primary account and backup only one Private Key of the primary account
C) "Export Wallet" zip as it is in the tutorial

Is this still used as a final list to check before launch: https://chain.nem.ninja/stakes/registered/ and then Double Check Your Private Key.

Then it will be really useful to have all my data locally too and running some sync software which will check status of my files and in case some file was deleted from all hosts it will inform me and I re upload file from my local disk.

This is not something we'll be able to make in the next 2 months, but perhaps we can do it in the future.

I understand that everything is not so easy. This is only from my "home user" point of view. Maybe describe real usage for end user would help to understand and see what is planed.

In case I know that I must have local copy and at least receive warning when my file is not in the cloud. Then it is better.

Or you are targeting complete different usage.

It is clear how will look situation when I will have 100% guarantee that my uploaded file will be there one year later?

Initially we cannot promise that anything you upload will still be there in a year, especially for the early life of the network we can't be sure that the same hosts will be around for a year or more. We can however provide 'health' indications of your file and repair tools - if the 'health' of the file goes down it's pretty easy to bring it back up, but you need to click a button; it's not automatic. Eventually, I do think a 100% guarantee for 1 year will be reasonable. (but not immediately!)

And will exist situation where I will not be sure that the file will be there?

For example person will upload passwords list and lose local copy.

Files will be encrypted, with the keys stored on your disk. If you lose the keys, you won't be able to recover the file. It may be possible to have keys that are like brainwallets, so all you need to do is remember a password, but for the time being you'll have to keep the keys backed up.

====

Overall, I believe that storage on Sia will be more reliable than any other solution. But until we've got at least 20 different people constantly online as hosts, I wouldn't trust file uptime at all. We won't make any guarantees, especially while the network is young.

Then it will be really useful to have all my data locally too and running some sync software which will check status of my files and in case some file was deleted from all hosts it will inform me and I re upload file from my local disk.

MaWo: are you implementing Atomic Cross-Chain Transfer?
btc2nxt will do for NFD.
ACCT is a use case of AT.
http://ciyam.org/at/at_atomic.html

Not Atomic, it will be Automated Transactions (AT), right?
