You should backup the wallet.dat file, not just your address. Only by having your wallet.dat (private key) will you be able to spend your btc.
Is it sufficient to have the address and dump the private key, and have that pair stored in keepass, or written down? With just those strings, could a wallet be reconstructed?

The wallet is long gone. I think there could be some useful improvements, like warning the user that the address has never been seen, are you sure, etc.
OK, feeling hopeful. I found the wallet in an old Carbonite backup. I have restored that to a working bitcoin location, and am now synching. It's taking forever to sync, but fingers crossed.
