The hacks just keep on coming
by

Anything that you do online comes with a risk. As technology has advanced, so has the skills and knowledge of hackers and cyber criminals. Even though buying cryptocurrencies is a way to keep your money safe from government, its still at risk from cybercrime.

NiceHash, a well-known mining marketplace, experienced this risk firsthand when about 4,700 Bitcoins were stolen from the site’s account. The platform’s CEO, Marko Kobal, had this to say in a video statement on Thursday:

“Yesterday morning at about 1am, a hacker or a group of hackers was able to infiltrate our systems through a compromised company computer.”

Based on this, the platform would be out of commission for at least 24 hours. At the time of writing, the site was still down. When the Bitcoins were stolen, they were collectively worth over $70 million.

The platform discussed the hack with other exchanges and mining platforms in a possible bid to both track and hopefully recover the funds.

NiceHash provides a space for miners to mine cryptocurrencies and get paid in Bitcoin. Kobal claims that the platform has paid out $1 billion in Bitcoin since it began operating four years ago.

The breach appears to have occurred when the hacker(s) gained access to the site by using the details of one of the company’s engineers.

“Given the complexity and security of the systems in place, this appears as an incredibly coordinated and highly sophisticated attack,” Kobal said.

However, Kobal did not mention if the hack extended to the platform’s user’s accounts.

“While the full scope of what happened is not yet known, we recommend, as a precaution, that you change your online passwords,” the platform said in a statement.

This isn’t the first instance of a crypto security breach though. Well-known Hong Kong-based exchange, Bitfinex, also had to close up shop for a bit last year when almost 120,000 Bitcoins were stolen. Based on the market back then, that was worth over $65 million.

Bitstamp, a European exchange, suffered a similar fate when their platform was hacked and they lost approximately 19,000 Bitcoins.

This problem may get worse before it gets better, especially when you throw political aspirations into the mix. FireEye, a cybersecurity firm, previously stated hackers in North Korea are stepping up their Bitcoin-stealing game in attempts to financially support Kim Jong Un's authoritarian rule.

The news of NiceHash’s security breache comes hot on the heels of Bitcoin breaking astronomical new price records, bulldozing passed the $20k mark on some exchanges. It also comes in the wake of CBOE announcing that they will begin trading Bitcoin futures on the 10th of December.

ASX jumps on board the blockchain train
by
mayuri27
on 17/12/2017, 16:54:11 UTC
It’s not just Bitcoin making waves with its phenomenal price surges and futures contracts. Blockchain, which is actually the underlying technology for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, has taken another step on its road to global adoption.

Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), the country’s main stock exchange, announced on Thursday that they will be using blockchain technology to process equity transactions.

This is a groundbreaking move, a sentiment echoed by ASX deputy chief executive, Peter Hiom:

“We're the first exchange to consider taking this step.”

Blockchain has become one of the major buzz words in range of industries, not just in crypto. This distributed ledger offers users a secure and cost-effective way to store records and transactions. These records cannot be changed or deleted.

Because of this, it is seen as a great tool for banks and financial institutions. However, it can be used in many different industries.

In the case of ASX, Digital Asset Holdings will provide the technology. The latter is a start-up run by Blythe Masters, a banker who previously worked for JPMorgan Chase & Co.

ASX has invested at least $14.9 million in the start-up. With additional investments from CME and JPMorgan, Digital Asset Holdings has raised more than $152 million.

Coinbase crashes but still has ‘most downloaded app’ title
by

There are many ways to measure the success of companies, especially those in the online sphere.  Perhaps, in our increasingly smartphone-glued-to-your-hand world, the best way to determine this how many people have downloaded your app.

If this is the new measure of success, then Coinbase definitely has something to smile about.  The crypto exchange describes itself as a “secure online platform for buying, selling, transferring, and storing digital currency”.  This was probably music to the ears of those hoping to benefit from the rise and rise of Bitcoin, and for those following its upward growth trajectory over the last year.

The world’s most well-known cryptocurrency left dropped jaws and head scratching in its wake over the last two weeks when it continued to breeze passed its previous record-breaking heights.

It first achieved five-figure status by reaching $10k, then continued to climb in $1k increments until it reached $18k, even $20k on some exchanges.  One memorable day showed the price increase by 20% in just 24 hours!

These impressive numbers saw people scrambling to get in on that Bitcoin action, which resulted in the Coinbase app going into overdrive.  It took its maiden voyage to the top spot of Apple’s US App Store for free apps.  In addition, the platform is said to have opened approximately 300,000 new accounts in a single day.

The value of Bitcoin
by
mayuri27
on 17/12/2017, 16:52:36 UTC
Bitcoin entered the arena claiming to be the next big thing in electronic cash.  It took a while, but it gained traction with more and more enthusiasts convinced that it would be just that.

Through an unpredictable market, it’s increase in price seemed to reflect that it was indeed on its way to becoming the Next Big Thing, but this same market volatility detracted from its initial aim of being a currency, albeit a virtual one.

Yes, fiat currencies do fluctuate, but definitely not to the degree that Bitcoin does.  Take last week.  In the span of one day, the price of a single Bitcoin grew from $14k to $18k.  Looking at the market today, it’s trading at just under $14k.  This volatility may make for excitement and mystery, but it doesn’t do well when Bitcoin is trying to establish itself as a viable alternative currency.  In addition, converting Bitcoin to dollars is a tedious, and sometimes expensive, process, which doesn’t help its cause either.

Perhaps Bitcoin can be defined as store of value, as in keeps its value without depreciating.  Fiat currency used in economically advanced and stable countries could be referred to as stores of value, if hyperinflation doesn’t occur.

Inflation, in the context of an increase the actual supply of available money, is a moot point for Bitcoin has it has a finite amount, which is 21 million, of coins available.  Bitcoin has the potential to be a powerful cash alternative, especially in countries with a high level of government and institutional corruption.  However, because it does not currently have all of the usual suspects required for it to be a currency, it has not yet been adopted as a preferred medium of exchange.  So, it’s a no for store of value then.

Bitcoin-inspired illicit investment schemes to face regulatory axe: Sebi
by
mayuri27
on 17/12/2017, 16:50:26 UTC
Market watchdog SEBI will come down heavily on illicit 'initial coin offers' seeking public investments with the promise of high returns from Bitcoins and other virtual currencies, amid a mushrooming of such schemes in the absence of any regulatory regime.

However, SEBI is not keen to take on the mantle of a regulator for such 'trading' — currently being offered on a number of so-called exchanges despite there being no rules in this regard — as the underlying product, which is Bitcoin or any such cryptocurrency, is not an approved product by RBI or any other agency, top officials said.

At the same time, SEBI cannot allow gullible investors to be taken for a ride with unlawful promises by these exchanges and those claiming to 'mint' cryptocurrencies. A number of them are suspected to be indulging in fraudulent activities without actually minting any such virtual currencies that require very complex algorithms, the officials noted.

Decentralizing centralized exchanges
by
mayuri27
on 17/12/2017, 16:49:38 UTC
Virtual currencies seem to be the way of the future.  It offers decentralized freedom from both greedy governments and handsy financial corporations who are ready and willing to take your hard-earned money.

Even though this is a common sentiment among crypto enthusiasts, these very same users are actually using centralized exchange platforms to keep their money.  It may not be the bank holding their funds, but those funds are still being held, only now by the operators of the exchange.

An additional threat to these centralized exchanges are hackers.  Security breaches have been reported by many well-known exchanges, including Bitfinex, and more recently, NiceHash.

As crypto’s popularity and adoption grows, so too does the need to have a safe and secure decentralized method to convert your fiat to crypto and vice versa.  Blockchain seems to be the answer as its completely decentralized, which is one of its selling points, which will allow users complete control over what happens to the funds.

Bitcoin is Trading at a 40% Premium in Africa – Here’s Why
by
mayuri27
on 17/12/2017, 16:48:14 UTC
This week bitcoin surpassed $19,000 on global exchanges, with the exception of one continent – Africa. Customers of the world’s second largest and second most populous continent were already paying that much per coin back in November. Prices at Africa’s Golix.com exchange have been 40% higher than the rest of the word for months. Now news.Bitcoin.com can reveal why.

On November 15, it was revealed that Zimbabweans were paying $13,500 for bitcoin, a sum that was described at the time as “eye-watering”. Last month’s expensive bitcoin is this month’s cheap bitcoin, and the intense demand for the digital currency has since pushed it to over $19,000 globally as of this writing. The premium that’s been in place at the continent’s Golix exchange remains in place though. As a consequence, one bitcoin there is currently trading for around $32,000, down slightly from a peak of $34,000.

Citizens of Zimbabwe Use Bitcoin to Access International Markets“Who’s talking about us?” runs a banner on the homepage of Golix alongside logos for media organizations that include CNN, CNBC, Reuters, and news.Bitcoin.com. Everyone in bitcoin is talking about Golix and they’re all asking the same question – why? Why is it so expensive to acquire the virtual currency in Africa? The answer comes from a recent blog post on Golix which outlines the factors that have contributed to the premium price.

As Bitcoin Flirts With $20,000, Let's Revisit Its Earlier Crashes
by
mayuri27
on 17/12/2017, 16:45:01 UTC
Somehow the Bitcoin roller coaster just keeps climbing, leaving many people wondering when it will finally crest the top of the hill and tumble down the other side or if it may just climb right out of the atmosphere.

On Saturday the price of a single Bitcoin briefly crossed $19,700 on Coinbase, which is remarkable for the cryptocurrency that was trading for under $1,000 a this time last year and under $8,000 only a month ago. In just the past seven days, Bitcoin is up nearly 35 percent.

All along the way there has been talk of a Bitcoin bubble about to burst, and as the price approaches another psychological milestone at $20,000 the question of whether we've finally reached the peak is top of mind once again.

Bitcoin is notoriously volatile and it may not be well known that its price has actually crashed a handful of times in the past, when it was less on the mainstream radar.
