Re: Bitcoin Core 0.20.1 Address does not refer to key when signing message

For signing a message in Bitcoin core, you need a legacy address.
And for generating a legacy address in bitcoin core, go to console and use the command below.

Code:
getnewaddress "" legacy

For generating a legacy address that have a label, you can use the command below.

Code:
getnewaddress ("Enter the label here" "legacy")
Thanks for this info, I'll try and see if that does the trick for now.

I expected the first one not to work since its a sort of legacy address.

Both are SegWit addresses. A legacy address starts with 1.

Am I missing something or does this function simply not work? It seems Electrum can do it just fine.

This function does not work. A standard of signing messages is currently being worked on. Only Electrum is able to verify its messages signed using SegWit addresses. Either import your private key for that address into Electrum and inform the other party that they will be able to verify your message only using Electrum or use a legacy address instead.
Thanks for the info! I'll do it using Electrum then.

Bitcoin Core 0.20.1 Address does not refer to key when signing message
by

So guys, I've been using Bitcoin Core 0.20.1 and now I had to sign a message to be able to verify an address when buying some BTC.. part of a KYC process.

I have two type of addresses in my wallet. One starting with "3"  and one with "bc1"

I expected the first one not to work since its a sort of legacy address.

When signing with either of them I get the following error "Address does not refer to key (code -3)"

So now it seems that no matter what type of address I create from within that same wallet, none of them are able to sign messages...

Am I missing something or does this function simply not work? It seems Electrum can do it just fine.

Without a dev team or people actually making a roadmap and taking over this coin is going nowhere even though I still have some since 2012

Without a dev willing to work on it that can update the wallet and claim that it is the real chain with a real official website this won't go anywhere

I use wallet 1.88 havent done any transactions with it, but it's fully synced. Any clue what the block height should be and what wallet exactly should be used then? This coin has no real devs so difficult to find out what version to use and more important where to get it

IFC is just like Doge, it may need some technical upgrades but other than that it works just fine. I have been holding some IFC since 2012 and will continue to do so.

One problem that I see is we need more miners. The more different miners, the smaller the chances of 51% attacks. But this goes for every crypto. This is not something that IFC suffers from alone. If support for BitcoinCash would drop severely then it would also be easy to attack that is someone wanted to do harm. In the end 51% attacks cost a lot of power (money) to do and the return isn't that great.

One more thing is that IFC doesn't have a real team so there are multiple wallets out there that people don't trust. I still use 1.8.8

To succeed more you need people actively talking about IFC on Twitter etc. That's where all the crypto people are today. I don't know anyone else (in person) that uses BitcoinTalk even though I still like it.

The problem that I have with IFC right now is that the project was abandoned it seems, the old website infinitecoin(com) is still there with old information that is completely outdated. There is no team that is now in control of the information on coinmarketcap for example, Twitter etc. Without this you can't go anywhere unless a group of people can take over and actually start fresh with a new wallet and community support on Telegram, Discord, Twitter etc.   Who owns the domain for example?
I think if Fisheater and TECSHARE can go back to develop IFC, these problems are not a problem. Grin
Imaging the possibilities for future growth for Infinitecoin. This coin should be able to be just as good als Doge for example. Remember that IFC is still on CoinMarketCap and that will never happen if you would want to do that now.

How does the community know what version of the wallet to use? I still use 1.8.8 but I believe there are people who created a 1.9? This is a bit confusing as this BitcoinTalk thread is also not updated I think? I could be wrong

Who is running / managing IFC now? Do we have an official Discord or Telegram etc? I have the feeling this coin is so invisible and hard to find online. I was just wondering because the website is also very outdated when it comes to providing information. Any idea who owns the domain?

Hey everyone, I think it's time we spend more time here on Bitcointalk. I've haven't been on this website for a year I think. Maybe due to the bearmarket.  Planning on visiting more frequently. How's everyone doing?

I have setup my own extra Infinitecoin explorer, you can find it in the link below. It is still syncing, that could take a few days depending on how fast it syncs. I want to know if it works ok, I'll leave this online for a few weeks see how it goes.

Hey people, can you update me on the current status of IFC?  did someone take over the project? I can setup a block explorer for IFC if you want, I'd be happy to try.
All I need to do is update my 1.8.8 wallet to the new one? I've been in IFC since 2014, still holding
