Thanks for getting  back to me guys.
What do you all think of the Dragonmint 16T?

Would it be worth investing in a few of these instead of antminers?

Setting up my first bitcoin mine in garage
by

Hi all,

I am looking for advice on setting up a home solar garage mining farm.
I live in Queensland Australia where it can get very hot at times but great for solar energy year round except for the season.

- My garage is hot most of the time of the year, will I need to get it insulated and make it temperature controlled?
- I already have solar on my roof producing 6.17KWh today with a power of 1903W.
- I am willing to cover my roof with more solar if it means saving electricity.
- My solar currently does not have batteries to be stored in for nighttime use, it is just on-grid.
- I primarily just want to mine bitcoin, would recommend just bitcoin or move into altcoin mining using an FPGA miner?
- Should I turn my system off during the rainy season when there will be less sunlight and no profit?
- I have all the funds to start this venture but know that it could be a gamble if the market crashes or unexpected events happen.
- how many miners should I setup to start with?
- what is the best brand miner to go with?
- would it be smarter to buy old used miners and even some damaged ones and fix them cheaply to use for miners too?

Could this be a good new years resolution project to get started? I know the halvening is coming up this May 2020 meaning it will be even more difficult to mine but could it still be worth my while?

Thanks for all the opinions and thoughts you may have.

Re: Getting bitcoin address from blockchain.info wallet.aes.json file

Yes, I setup up btcrecover lastnight only to discover that I had to know part of the password to start with.
Is there a way to just bruteforce the password without knowing any part of it or will that just take too much time to compute?
Try put this in .txt that used for password list
Code:
0
1
2
3
. << - - - until
9
a
b
c
d
. << - - - until
z
However, it will take a lot of time to brute forcing it except you're lucky or the password is pretty easy, it can take about some years or probably hundred years. If you think the password only number, then you don't need to write the alphabet, and vice versa.

Thanks for this!
Luckily I managed to guess the password Smiley

If you have a clue what your password might be or know some specific characteristics of your password you might try out btcrecover.
But you need a pretty decent clue on what it might be.

For example, can you limit the amount of characters it had (e.g. 6 to 8 ) ?
Can you tell for sure which symbols you have (or have not) used ?
Do you regularly use any specific sequence (e.g. always 123 at the end) ?

All of these things are helping to decrease the search space. If you can guess it good enough, you can bruteforce it.

Getting bitcoin address from blockchain.info wallet.aes.json file
by

on 09/10/2018, 11:47:36 UTC
Does anyone know how I can find out how much I have in my old blockchain.info wallet?
I have the wallet.aes.json backed up but dont know the password to login.

Is there a way to find out the bitcoin receiving address to see how much is in the account?

Cheers

@bob123 it would be great if you tell the name of the linux distro or recovery tools.

That's not really distro specific (even tho there are some available which have the basic tools for recovery, e.g. knoppix)
The majority of recovery tools are available for all most common distros (e.g. debian based).

You'll have a higher success rate on linux since there are way more (and better) free tools available for linux than for windows.

The chosen tool itself depends on the situation. An example would be:
For imaging / cloning the drive: dd
To correct partition level issues: Testdisk
To recover specific files based on ending (ignores file system): Photorec (is part of Testdisk)

Ok,

Thanks for all the info.

Im a newbie to Linux.
As there is Windows 7 already installed on the device how do I go about installing Linux?

Is there a small portable version I can download without having to lose windows?

I have the wallet.dat file here but when downloaded  the Bitcoin Core wallet and synched it and then overwrote the wallet.dat with the new one it came up with a balance of 0. Am I doing something wrong or missing something?

Core does never overwrite a wallet.dat if it already exists in the directory.
Chances are high that this is your old wallet (if it was in the correct directory).

Core does only create a new wallet.dat if there is no in the data directory (standard directory?)

Even if you have deleted the file, under some circumstances you would be able to recover it using some recovery tool and a linux distro.

But, the phrase from your OP is not related to core in any way (maybe your wallet password?).

I have a software program called Recova, its a windows program. I managed to see that there were some files deleted in the recycle bin relating to bitcoin dating back to 2013, and they were called:
blk00013.dat
000346.ldb
rev00029.dat

any reason why it might show these in the recycle bin recovery program?

Also, why should I use Linux distribution to recover files instead of the Recuva program? Is it better? Will it find a lot more files?

Thanks for any help,

M

I do have the wallet.dat
Im not sure whether it is an old or new one. How can I tell?
can you try dumpwallet command on console and then check the output file
in that file, each line will show the date when the specific address was generated by the wallet
it should give you some clues on how old the wallet you currently have

When I typed in "dumpwallet" where does the file save to? or how do I see the information you are talking about?

I installed Recuva software and searched the recycle bin.
What I found was a file called $R1R1T1P.exe it was last modified 02/05/2013 its 14,691kb and its file name is blk00013.dat and was stored in users\henry\appdata\roaming\bitcoin\blocks\blk00013.dat

What could this file suggest?
Was this part of a mining file? node? So weird.

Bought Bitcoin in the year 2009, doesn't seem right.

So what the time stamps, could that mean that he once was mining it and didnt even realise it? or running a node?
I will ask him about the Liberty Exchange and see if that sparks his memory. Thanks for that!
Here's to rephrase the answer: Your given debug log in the OP only consists of information regarding full nodes, nothing on wallets or whatsoever.
It was used by the client, though.

I have a friend who bought bitcoin in 2009 but cant remember much at all.
On his laptop there is a bitcoin folder but it is dated 2018 for when the wallet.dat was created which leads me to believe that it was made this year.
The datestamp 2018 indicates that something inside that folder was overwritten/added on the displayed date.
In your case, that was the time when you've overwritten the original wallet.dat inside that data directory.

If you still got a backup of the directory, there's still a chance to check if the wallet has bitcoins in it.
Otherwise, stop using the client until you can get a data-recovery software to recover the old (overwritten) wallet.dat to increase the chance of data recovery success (talking about the file, not the coins in it).

Oh dear, so if the wallet.dat has been overwritten then is there anyway of going back in time before that has happenned?
I am having trouble looking for old backups. Is there software out that can bring a file back that has been overwritten?

Thank's for clarifying about the timestamps.

So it was this year someone or my friend has installed the bitcoin core and happenned to overwrite the wallet.dat file by accident presumably.

The debug file only contains info of each blocks, starting from genesis block. New best is block hash, date is timestamp of when the block is mined (and thus no correlation with your problem) and others already tell itself.
If you have original wallet.dat (not new/the result of overwritten), we might able to dig more information.

I do have the wallet.dat
Im not sure whether it is an old or new one. How can I tell?
All I know is when I open the debug info I get all that info.

Check the date created or date modified of the wallet.dat on your file explorer. But date created usually changed if the wallet.dat is copied.

He bought or he mined? This file could be related to Bitcoin Core wallet and as it downloads the whole blockchain it shows historical blocks.

The story goes he bought bitcoin back in 2009.
He may have mined it by accident? Im not so sure. But he is certain he bought bitcoin back then.

I doubt he mistaken between mining/buying bitcoin (unless his memory is wrong). But anyway this information can't help much.

A bit off-topic, the first bitcoin exchange is New Liberty Standard (https://web.archive.org/web/20091229132610/http://newlibertystandard.wetpaint.com/page/Exchange+Rate). You might want ask him if he know/remember this exchange.

So what the time stamps, could that mean that he once was mining it and didnt even realise it? or running a node?
I will ask him about the Liberty Exchange and see if that sparks his memory. Thanks for that!

It's not a GA code because those are represented in base32 and according to the RFC the base32 alphabet does not include the character 8.
OP made up an example to show what it looks like. It could very well be his original code is 15 characters base32, but he didn't know that when he typed "JPGZE4MATACPN8L" as an example.

You are both absolutely right.
The character 8 is not actually in the original one.
The 8 is actually a 9 in the real one Wink

So what are your guys thoughts on it? could quite possibly well be an authenticator key?

Im actually looking for bitcoin for a friend on his laptop.

I'd agree with OmegaStarScream here. This looks like a Google 2FA code.
They use 'secret codes' with capital letters + numbers and a length of less than 16 symbols.

This definitely isn't a private key. You need way more characters to encode a private key (256 bit).

Do you remember anything at all regarding the wallet you have used ?
Did you use an online wallet ? Or did you maybe use a desktop wallet ?

This GA code could be from anywhere.

Those are Windows GUIDs. They are not likely to be related to Bitcoin.
Isn't that blockchain.com wallet ID? I have wallet on there and its pretty similar with OP's listed. The format is same too 8-4-4-4-12(random word an number).
If this right, how op can get this list?

You are right. They could be blockchain.info wallet ids, but I tried some of them and it said "Unknown Wallet ID".

It would not work maybe because I randomized the characters to protect the account.
I went to blockchain.info and in the search put the first line of numbers and it said "Oops! We couldn’t find what you are looking for."
Am I searching the right way? I didnt see wehre it says "Unknown Wallet ID" like you said.

Not necessarily... because the rest of the network would have rejected the transaction as "dust"... most of the nodes would have refused to propagate the transaction... and you transaction would have effectively "disappeared"... which it appears to have done.

At this point in time, your only hope is that CoinJar refund you your 989 sats and your CoinJar points.

In the future, I'd recommend you don't try and send anything less than 0.001 BTC from CoinJar at the very minimum. Given that CoinJar are using a default of "0.0005 bitcoin transaction fee"

Thank's HCP, will do another test shortly with more than 0.001 and see how it goes and report back.
