Re: Commission-free advertising network business model

As an advertiser, I don't really care if the ad network or the site displaying my ads get the money.  I want the ad service to be matching my ads to people most likely to want what's in those ads, and I want the widest possible distribution on high quality sites.

If me selecting a higher percentage to go to the network lowers the chance my ad will show up on a site, I don't imagine I would.

Why do people thing a current utility bill is a good verification of ID?  It seems like it'd be the easiest thing to forge.

It turns out my business liability insurance won't cover this site and it risks me losing my insurance across the board.  Because of that, I won't be developing bidfast any further.

Quick post-mortem: Never took a single BTC from anyone, and paid out all outstanding debts.  I will delete all personal information from the database.  For me, ~$100 and ~ a week's work was an acceptable cost to run an experiment to test the viability of a site like this.

If anyone would like to purchase the code and/or domain behind the site, please PM me.

On to find something else, I suppose.

There are a couple new auctions set up for tomorrow that are scheduled to end around 2:45 PM EST.  One for 0.25BTC and one for 0.5BTC

I've updated everyone's account to have 10 free bids.  You'll need to decide on how to split your bids between the auctions.

The bids went smoothly, except maybe the last second before the end of the auction where it seemed like the counter went from 0:01 to 0:00 twice meaning that it did something like 0:01 -> 0:00 -> 0:01 -> 0:00.

Yeah, I noticed that too.  Want to get it fixed before the next one.

Did you ever see the "Going..." message?

Congrats to djohn for winning the first one.

Thanks everyone for the first test.  Please do leave any feedback.

Had a few timing/display issues that need sorting out.  I'll be looking into those before the next test.

We definitely have enough people for a test tomorrow.  Still taking signups for anyone else interested.

Some notes about the site...

This is a very minimal site that only functions enough to test out the viability of the idea.  If you've ever heard the terms Lean Startup or Minimal Viable Product, that's what we're doing here.  This is the best time to make suggestions to help us improve what will eventually be the final product, and I really appreciate any feedback I can get.

Thanks everyone for signing up!  We've got enough people to run through some tests.  Tomorrow around noon EST I'll set up the first test.  I'll really appreciate any feedback on how it works.  Feel free to post here or over in the service discussion thread.

When I log-in and on Home page I click on any of the 6 picture items, it shows me sign-up page. Shouldnt it show purchase bids page when I have 0 bids left?

Yup, it should do exactly that.  That homepage is just a placeholder for now with the only goal of getting people to sign up.  Thanks for letting me know.

You lose whatever you bet. The more you're willing to lose, the higher your chance of winning the item.

Correct, it's how site like these work.  There's a ton of them out there for fiat.

Think of it more as entertainment than shopping.  Not really gambling or a lotter since there is no random chance involved.  I've heard some people have come up with fairly interesting strategies to consistently "beat the house".

Sounds a bit fishy?

What's fishy?  Not trying to hide what the site is or how it works at all.

Thanks for the note on the verification email, I'll look into it.

Thanks for everyone who has been signing up.  Would like just a couple more people before the first test.  I'm hoping I can start one tomorrow (Wed Sep 26) around Noon EST - I'll shoot out an email letting you know.

Are you going to tell people who you are and why they should trust your site ?

I wasn't worrying too much about that since I'm not asking for any money from anyone yet.  But this is me:

Code:
Marc Hughes
Rogue Software Development LLC
MA, USA

That should be enough info for anyone who's interested to find me.  I'll post a proper about-us style page on the site with more info before it goes live for real.

Thanks for the intrest from everyone!

Hiya (fellow) newbies!  Looking for a way to earn a couple BTC?  Over the next week and a half, I'm doing some testing on a new site I'm working on and am looking for a few beta testers.  During that, I'll be giving away 5 BTC total, no risk to you.

Please see the post over here for details:

I recently bought my first 11BTC via ebay/paypal - a 10BTC and a 1BTC auction.  Both went smoothly.

Paid a premium, but 27 more days in my Dwolla time-out to go.

Looking for beta testers - Bitcoin penny auction site
by
mhughes
on 24/09/2012, 18:10:07 UTC
I spent the weekend hacking together my first foray into the bitcoin world.  It's a penny-auction site (like Quibids or any of the other similars) paid in bitcoin.

It will be auctioning off new items, and sometimes auctions for bitcoin itself.

I'm looking for a few beta testers to help work out the kinks.

What do you get:
Free BTC!  Or at least a chance at winning some bitcoin on an auction.  I'm planning on going through 5BTC total in a few auctions over a week or so.  I'll spread around some free bids before each batch of test-auctions,  in this round of testing you don't have to spend anything, not a single BTC.

How to help:
Sign up for an account at http://bidfast.co/
Then post here letting me know some date/times you'd be available to try it

What do I get:
A chance to test out the site.  Hopefully, you'll also be able to give me some feedback on what you think.

Details...
I'm shooting for 6 batches of auctions with rewards from 0.2 to 2 BTC
