Bitcoin is the original one, doesn't mean it is the best.
Forgive me if I don't understand the computer science behind this, but isn't it better to have more than one of something?
For example Burger King and McDonalds.
Having more than one, means they compete and try to find ways to out perform each other.
Why not duplicate the block chain (I believe you call it a fork) into two copies that would then diverge from each other? In the hope that they would compete and drive forward innovation.

What is currently, the best cryptocurrency around? I mean from a technological point of view.
4. Better competitor crypto currency with some technical advantage, like speed - Could ethereum replace bitcoin?
Personally if I invented a coin that was better than bitcoin. The first thing I would do would be to mine 12 million and offer them to bitcoin owners on a like for like basis.
