connect a PCI-E GPU via USB?

I've run into an issue, in my 7x GPU rig (yes, for mining), where the 7th card connected to my motherboard (Z87-G45) cannot be used due to "code 12: not enough free resources." If I can somehow run this GPU off of USB or another non-PCI-e interface, this should solve this problem.

I use USB to PCI-e risers, like this: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=392536

It connects to the GPU via PCI-e, but theoretically I could plug the other end directly into a USB port, while giving the card power as usual via SATA. Could this work, and would the PC recognize it? Thought I'd ask before I tried and fried something.

Thanks

I have 7 cards setup - works ok, but requires a monitor to boot. 5 cards setup on same MB - does not require monitor connected - not sure what this problem connected to (

Micax1, on the ASRock Z87 Killer (Fatal1ty), did you have to short any of the pins in the PCI-e slots to get all 7 GPUs to work/be recognized?

z87 g45 confirmed working with 7 R9 280x cards. z87 g55 and z87 mpower should work fine too.

Rig config :

- windows 8.1
- lbr modified 13.12 amd drivers
- All cards on 1x 16x usb risers.

Burninj, on the z87 g45, did you have to short any of the pins in the PCI-e slots to get all 7 GPUs to work/be recognized?

Hey guys,

I know a lot of you have given up on running 7x 79xx series cards because it's a huge pain in the ass. Well, I've found the right hardware combo to make it happen!

All cards are normally pegged at 740KH/s, but they're a little slower on this pool for some reason.

Rig hardware:

Ivy Bridge i3 or Pentium
MSI Z77 MPower
7x Sapphire Dual-X 7970
Seasonic 1000w Platinum + Seasonic X760w

Software:

Windows 8 x64
Techpowerup's 13.1 drivers

I have another rig running 7x GB WF3 7950s with an MSI Big Bang Xpower X58. I also have an MSI Z77-GD65 running another 6x 7970s which I'm going to try a 7th card on when I get a chance, but I don't think that board is going to work with 7 cards.

TLDR: 7 cards is possible!  Grin

Prelude, for the MSI Z77 MPower, did you have to short any of the pins in the PCI-e slots to get all 7 GPUs to work/be recognized?
