To that address yes. Most people get their own address in a pm or use bitmit. Nobody has tried to cheat yet (and why would they), but you know what, that method is kind of lame. I'm removing it from the main thread.

Yes, it's not really advertised well, on bitmit, but once you have the order page, with an escrow address, it says in the notes that you can use an "individually agreed upon prize" or something like that. The order page will reflect if you sent more or less than the list price - but it doesn't have any effect on the usual escow dance (you send them, they get confirmed, I send the product, marking it as sent, you confirm delivery and the money are released - however much there is in the escrow address).

True anyone can do this, there's a few hurdles you have to get over but it is very possible to do it by hand.

The signup part is easy, no tricks there - not even a captcha (which is key for my script-solution).
Then you'll need the dropbox client, a fresh mac address and cleared dropbox settings.
This is because, before the referral space is awarded, the client of the new user needs to be linked to the new account.
Starting the dropbox client, you're asked to visit a http-link that will connect your client with the account (the link uses  the mac address, and possibly the wan IP) - you visit the link and you're done.

You'll need to do this 32 times, clearing dropbox settings and switching mac address - which is fine to do on your normal machine, but i'd recommend virtual machine clones.

I found 32 times to be like doing it 1 mio. times. Maybe that's just me. Also, coupon codes?

There's certainly a risk. The moment i hear of anyone getting their accounts closed i'm done with this service. I haven't heard of anyone yet. Also I believe there's some forum posts on the matter from 2010 saying that you'll loose the space you "earned" if they find out - sorry i'm too lazy to dig it up. The problem with banning your account is that any guy on twitter could have picked up your link and started spamming you with referrals without your consent, so you could always plead the innocent card.

I completely understand why some folks feels this is over the border. Hopefully no-one takes offense of these threads.

I just want to plug that if you want to do business through bitmit.net (with escrow), you are welcome to "negotiate a price" with me after buying the listed item (at ~1btc). The system does not care how much has actually been transferred in the transaction.

So to reiterate, you can "pay what you want" on bitmit.net as well, by "buying" the listed item at 1btc.

I have a feature request for short-lived auction, i.e 12-24 hours.

This would allow people like me to do short-lived promotions on seperate sites, inviting "bursts" of new page hits / users for bitmit.

That is correct. The referrals I create are "valid" in the sense that they work just like a normal dropbox account. However, they do have weird emails and names. I've switched between using a name generator and random-strings for emails a couple of times. Right now it's all generated names.

I'm very interested in hearing more about these so called "non-spoofed" dropbox accounts.

I use escrow on bitmit and it works almost flawlessly. Sometimes you'll have someone who forgets to release the money, but in all my cases, they've turned up eventually.

Oh and since 5850Guy is using SugarSync, I guess there's a spot for one more.

5850Guy, getting banned would suck. I've yet to hear from anyone who got banned though, and from their own forums they seem to claim that if you were found out, you only lose the referrals, no banning.

The Easter bunny told me that if you're quick (like "top 5 quick"), you may be able to get those extra 16gigs of dropbox space, for free.
