Re: US Department of Justice announces historical BTC seizure (Silk Road related)

These people are not clear to me at all, because you were capable enough to steal all those BTC, but you were so stupid that you kept them in your house all those years and did nothing to secure yourself a more than pleasant future somewhere far from any US agencies. Now, instead of a comfortable life on some paradise island, the man is waiting for 20 years in prison, where he will share a smelly cell with some fat guy who will call him Bitcoin Jenny Roll Eyes

The raid and seizure of his hardware was on November 9 and the bitcoin didn't move until March 25 after he gave them passphrases. Just a variation on the wrench attack.

Re: Has Wired discovered the real Satoshi Nakamoto? (.. this time)
by

That's quite an interesting read, more detailed than Wired

So apparently Craig sold 1.1 million BTCs back in Sept 2011 for $100,000 and was trying to form a secret Bitcoin trust in the Seychelles
https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/2644014-Tulip-Trust-Redacted.html

It seems the numbers and values of bitcoin at that time did not match: In september 2011, 1 million BTC worth more than 5 million dollar. And you really can not do a lot with 100K dollar in a trust

And by looking at such a contract you will feel sad that no matter how secure bitcoin is, you still can not trust another person without a contract and the protection of law enforcement. Maybe that's why he want to write all these in to blockchain, but then the problem is who is going to enforce it without law enforcement?

Recall, it's a Tulip Trust with $100K in bulbs, so it's when they bloom where the big bucks are made.

I hope there is a liquidation sale. I could use a good deal to fill in some plots around my castle.

Indeed... that's weird how an IT security and forensics expert got doxxed by "leaked emails"...  Huh

Eh, even Hackingteam got hacked and all of their emails are on Wikileaks now.

Which is why we have Wright asking them about a $20k SQL injection tool

Re: Just came across swissbit - super secure microSD card to store your keys AND....

The smart card is highly certified from Infineon

And many products came highly certified by RSA who we found out was on the payroll of the NSA. What makes the employees of Infineon immune to bribes or secret government orders? He did only deny Chinese involvement. We can take silence on the NSA backdoor as confirmation.  Wink

It does seem like there are a great number of features you could add to the card that would make some aspects of security more convenient and certainty make something like key management easier. It's probably a good product to be paired with cryptocurrency, but it doesn't do much to protect you from the typical attack vector of a  compromised device, except maybe through obscurity.

it has been revealed that USB thumbdrive and SD have inherent security flaws that cannot be fixed

Man, this is not an ordinary SD.
Think about it as microSD card + lot of special circuits added

That's the potential security flaw.

Your block diagram is missing the backdoors the Chinese government had installed at the chinese foundry and the rootkit that in the Swissbit Security Interface binary installs that give the NSA full access to your device.

Those things aside, unless there is some external verification to perform it's functions aside from the software on the device controlling it, everything on the card is compromised if your device is compromised.

My block eruptors are off-line. I'm all for changing the encryption to a CPU only algorithm.
Good, you're on board. Now we just need all the miners who have invested millions in ASICs to agree to make that investment worthless and we can make it happen.

Seems to be a one hit wonder that never really had much going for it, the idea of getting mining power to do something useful is a good one, just xpm's got nothing much else.

What support I had for Primecoin is now behind Riecoin. If nothing more for the fact that Riecoin actually has a webpage with real organized information about it. It's pretty new, so not a lot of pools or exchanges support it yet. It's getting closer to breaking records, so I expect it will start to get some notice then.

Re: Wikipedia may accept Bitcoin

Wikipedia is centralization of information. Information should be decentralized too.

Trollololo

dumbololol you can't even explain how wikipedia is not centralized...

Well, for one, you are welcome to copy the entire contents and start your own wiki. A good portion of the infrustructure is ready for you to use too. Wikipedia is, in effect, a node which you can fork anytime. If the central authority (Wikimedia Foundation) fails the content can still exist.

Then there's the blatantly obvious way that defines the uniqueness of Wikipedia. Decentralized content creation and editing. Yes, there is still a central authority that regulates it, but you can fork and make your own editing rules if you wish.

These are obvious to most. They are not ideally implemented, optimized, or well distributed decentralization, but that technology, ready to take on the scope of wikipedia, is waiting to be invented. It's still a huge step away from the centralization of Encyclopedia Britannica.

Re: Hackers steal data from MtGox server and release it with Mark's reddit account.
by

Since the data seems to have been stolen around the time MtGox shutdown or later the question would be ... why would you keep this information on a webserver if you aren't actively using it anymore?

Is there data that suggest this? I'm not yet on a machine with an environment I can open it, so I'm only going off the reports of the last few months missing from the CSV. or is that just based on when the rumors of this started. Until I see data that proves the hack happened after the shutdown I'm going to assume they don't have it because it happened before or only involved a backup.

I mean, at this point it wouldn't surprise me in the least if Mark still had it facing the web, but I'm not about to trust the word of the hackers without evidence.

EDIT: Ah, user end balances are supposedly correct, that would be evidence supporting the word of the hackers.

Are there any email and passwords in the leaked data? Cos I had an account there and am worried about the leak.

You should assume nefarious people have all your personal data you gave Gox, even if not included here.

the hackers removed december, january and february, but the user endbalances are right.

December, january and february are the most crucial ones (to know who withdrew massive amounts of coins prior to Gox's collapse due to potential insider knowledge). Why would hackers remove these months I wonder  Huh

This and the data nanashi____ leaked were both old, I think I even remember it being pointed out that the source code leaked was probably old.  Seems that another possible explanation (which still implies Karpeles' incompetence) is this hack happened earlier or the hack involved an old server image.

Re: **Breaking news** Satoshi Nakamotos identity revealed

This is a perfectly legitimate story that has a high level of public interest.  I feel sorry for the hell that this poor man will have to endure for a few weeks, but it is not like she accused him of murder or pedophilia which the UK press have done to many innocent victims over the years usually followed by the tiniest of apologies.  A free press can be a horrible thing.

No, they wrote a story that could be read "this old guy has $400,000,000 in his unguarded house and here's a picture of if so you can find it easier". Forget his reputation, his life has been put at risk. You can't apologies to a man who has been beaten and tortured to death to tell were his private keys (he never had) are.

Gox wasn't awesome and then went to shit when Karpeles took over. It was always a shit hacked together site with little regard to security.
