Re: New Halfsize Avalon announced in lastest update -- 45Gh/s

Half size @ half price of 36-50BTC is fine, no need for second mortgage  Grin

agreed. I want to see ASIC devices start a mass-rollout though, as $4000 for 45GH is a tremendous deal for early buyers, but probably carries over a 50% profit margin for avalon.

Would rather see mass-produced 1-3GH/s devices for $300-500 a peice. It would end up with many more small investors and aid the distrobution of the BTC network far better then selling more hashing powerhouses that key players or big investors can only afford

This is a really important point -- low barriers to entry are key to competition. No competition = monopoly, and we all know a monopoly on hashing power = the end of BTC.

Consider a future where BTC grows legs and a large bank decides to become a "transaction processor" (transaction strengthener, if you will)... the kind of resources any of the big four could throw at this would utterly dwarf the network's throughput today. A good way to prevent this is for top tier efficiency hashing devices to be available as commodity goods, just as CPUs and GPUs are today.

Pretty cool -- I'd love to see a walkthrough/narrative of what you've done (that is to say, once you've arrived where you want to) to get fpgaminer up and running on the ML605.

I'd be keen on picking up one of those boards to muck around with, but would be a little more confident with a primer.

I would imagine (again, in same boat as you re: experience with FPGA) that you need their dev kit & tooling (which likely entails licensing) and would need to embark upon porting one of the open(ish) sourced FPGA miners (e.g., https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=9047.0)

Not knowing any better (blissful ignorance) this is of interest to me also assuming Altera do not have a major supply chain problem.

Make that HHTT...

Something weird going on with deepbit where after ~1 hr or so my throughput will drop to 3 or 4 MH/sec...

I've moved my MASSIVE 150MH/sec over to deepbit... from BTCGuild.

All is now right in the universe.

Imagine my joy when starting the dwolla account verification process on Friday for ACH (to avoid having to bother with wires to Mt.Gox) only to find the price nearly DOUBLED today... verification deposits showed up last night.

Yeahhh.. think I'll wait.

I'd argue that nuclear war would only impact the internet's total bandwidth, not its existence. Like someone else said, if the internet is dead and buried... chances are so are you.

Get ready to mock.

Installed bitcoin-qt about a year ago, would fail upon launch (don't even remember why.) Literally gave up WITHOUT troubleshooting... and totally forgot about mining.

Thought about mining again about 3 months later, decided wasn't worth it from an electricity cost perspective ($0.30/kwh here...)...

Surprise surprise, it now is....

Pity about the complete lack of supply chain for FPGA/ASIC setups thought :-|
