Guide: How to run your own P2Pool in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS with merged mining
by
murdof
on 17/05/2017, 09:57:02 UTC
This is a guide on how to run P2Pool on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Server with merged mining (emercoin)

17-May-2017: 1st version - Please report any issues

IMPORTANT SECURITY NOTE: If you are running your server on a VPS with full internet access make sure you change the rpcpassword or edit your config files and add rpcallowip=127.0.0.1

Some history:
I created this guide to have up to date P2Pool installation instructions on latest version of Ubuntu LTS (currently 14.04).
People may consider it difficult to get a P2Pool node up and running but in fact it's very simple if you have some basic Linux knowledge.
In this guide I will provide BTC and merged mining.
Note that althought BTC mining is distributed among P2Pool miners, merged coins will not be distributed to others but you will solo mine those.
If you mine exclusively with P2Pool you will get the same profit (and a bit more) compared to mining to other pools. In the long run NMC/DVC/IXC profit will be the same.

Install Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Server from here: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/server
(note do not install Ubuntu DESKTOP 16.04 LTS - you need Server version for text only install)

I will not cover instructions on how to do this. You can install it in a virtual machine or a physical machine.
For virtual machine start with 2 Processors and 4GB memory. Suggested disk size is 300GB (that's a lot but you will have room to grow).

Create a user and run all the commands as a user NOT as root.

If you find any mistakes please let me know!

First thing after you install ubuntu is to install all updates and prerequisites for Ubuntu:
Code:
sudo apt -y update
sudo apt -y install software-properties-common aptitude dialog
sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:bitcoin/bitcoin
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv B58C58F4
sudo add-apt-repository 'deb http://download.emercoin.com/ubuntu xenial emercoin'
sudo apt -y update
sudo apt -y install bitcoind emercoin screen python python-rrdtool python-pygame python-scipy python-twisted python-twisted-web python-imaging
sudo apt -y dist-upgrade

Grab P2Pool:
Code:
cd ~
sudo git clone git://github.com/forrestv/p2pool.git

Setup Bitcoin config file:
Code:
mkdir ~/.bitcoin/
echo server=1 >~/.bitcoin/bitcoin.conf
echo daemon=1 >>~/.bitcoin/bitcoin.conf
echo rpcuser=bitcoin >>~/.bitcoin/bitcoin.conf
echo rpcpassword=h3wby4zWjGwywZ >>~/.bitcoin/bitcoin.conf
echo rpcallowip=127.0.0.1 >>~/.bitcoin/bitcoin.conf

About emercoin:
We have already emercoin binary already from official repo.
For each installation a random RPC password is generated so do a:
sudo cat /var/lib/emc/.emercoin/emercoin.conf
Find the line:
rpcpassword=PheIHyBs99yyTBgrQGa6mUMmmO8Tq3ht

And hold on to this password.

Don't just copy paste the lines below.
Change the password after emccoinrpc to match your password you got above:
For example it should be: --merged http://emccoinrpc:PheIHyBs99yyTBgrQGa6mUMmmO8Tq3ht@127.0.0.1:6662/

Code:
echo /usr/bin/bitcoind  >~/start-p2pool
echo sleep 200 >>~/start-p2pool
echo screen -d -m -S p2pool ~/p2pool/run_p2pool.py bitcoin h3wby4zWjGwywZ --merged http://emccoinrpc:PheIHyBs99yyTBgrQGa6mUMmmO8Tq3ht@127.0.0.1:6662/ >>~/start-p2pool
chmod +x start-p2pool

You are not ready to start P2Pool just yet. The BTC blockchain has to be downloaded first and it will take some time...
So execute these commands and wait...

Run this command to start P2Pool:
Code:
screen -d -m -S p2pool ~/p2pool/run_p2pool.py bitcoin h3wby4zWjGwywZ --merged http://emccoinrpc:PheIHyBs99yyTBgrQGa6mUMmmO8Tq3ht@127.0.0.1:6662/ >>~/start-p2pool

You can view the P2Pool ouput using
Code:
screen -x p2pool

You disconnect from the P2Pool output by pressing: Ctrl-A and then D (nothing will show on screen)

When you reboot your server you can just start it by executing:
~/start-p2pool

The above command includes a wait of 200 seconds (so that bitcoind gets latest updates) before starting p2pool.

Making a new guide for Ubuntu 16.04 and Emercoin merged mining.
If there are any other coins that are not dead and can be merged mined please let me know so that I include them.

Thanks!

I haven't received any response from the "2 winners".

Hence I have to call this auction as FAIL and proceed to a new post.

Hey guys,

I'm getting offers via PM and I want this to be a fair auction.
So if you are serious about your offer please post it publicly.

People are asking me about the shipping cost.
This depends on the country of course.

Here are the dimensions of each box:
Dimensions: 63 *56 *14 cm
Weight: 14kg
Country/Postcode that courier will pick up from: 15341, Athens, Greece

So please do check locally how much it will cost. I can get a quote as well from UPS. Supposedly I have good prices with them but I have found out that they have screwed me over before.
So if you get a quote and I get a better price we can use my price, otherwise we use yours.

Thanks for the offer Oldbones.

My idea is that these miners should stay with one owner.
They grew up together in the same rack so I don't want to split them up Tongue

About consumption - here is the official page:
http://www.spondoolies-tech.com/products/sp10-dawson-mid-june-batch

It says 1050W (up to 1200W). I don't have something to measure it at the wall unfortunately. Maybe other owners of SP10 have done it already.

Could you please tell the hashrate you are getting and the power consumption for the miner?

Live monitor (I use this for people to check it when they rent it through betarigs):

In temperature is about 24C.

I have 2 Spondoolies Tech SP10 that I'm putting up for auction.
I have the original boxes for both of them and the miners are located in Greece with customs cleared and paid for EU.
So if I ship them to EU then you don't have to pay any extra taxes.
I will use the original boxes to ship them to the winner as soon as on Monday 22-Sep-2014 (that is next business day after auction has ended and payment has cleared/escrowed).
There are no cables / mount ears included.

This will be an auction that will end 19-Sep-2014 @ 22:00 GMT.

Both of the miners have been mining without issues at eligius, p2pool and I rent them at betarigs (https://www.betarigs.com/rig/7601).

One of the miners has minor cosmetic damage but hashes without issues.
I have no problem accepting escrow using a reputable member of bitcointalk that offers this service.

Description: Spondoolies Tech SP - 2 pcs
Starting bid: $1600 for both of the miners
End date and time: 19-Sep-2014 @ 22:00 GMT
Payment methods accepted: Bitcoin, Paypal, Bank Transfer
Shipping cost NOT included

I'm providing pictures of the miners.

This is the first miner:

This is the second miner with the cosmetic damage:

Happy to answer any other questions.

So how is Matt's fork running guys?

I wanted to ask if Matt's fork is lifting the issue of having to use low latency connections for P2Pool.

I'm presuming that as their new p2pool code is open source, it will be configurable in the same way it is now, so anyone can still have their own node?.....Maybe their hosted miners can also be configured this way too, so that it can be pointed at any node the user wishes? Just speculating, of course......

Yes no problem with that.
Thing is that in 12 months time - even in 3 months time a miner of 1TH/s might be useless to run at home/datacenter.
And where can I buy a new one from?
So in other words who needs an excellent working P2Pool when nobody will have miners at their homes making ROI.

The manufacturers are taking away the benefits we have with P2Pool with forcing cloud mining only (and by forcing I mean if they sell to us miners that will never ROI).

On a side note this answers the fact why they switched S3 to preorders.
I don't know if this is good news or bad news - as this leaves only Spondoolies to offer hardware without running a farm at the same time.
Yes you will say that Bitmain is "renting" its power but since they come out and say that they officially have a farm we don't know how much extra power (maybe the S3s that didn't ship for 1.5 months) and of course they are merge mining.

So is this good for p2pool? Well nobody will care in 12 months time because it seems that we will all be forced to switch to cloud mining and others will keep the benefits of p2pool. We will just get payouts based on a calculator every week.

It seems that serious companies copied pbmining's ponzi scheme. But this time since they have their own hardware they will just remove the "ponzi" part and do it legit and we will all accept and be happy.

It seems mining for the average folks will be a thing of the past soon...

And now everyone starts thinking that maybe forrestv is working for bitmain on the new branch thats why he had disappeared?
