Most college students would just back down at this point but since we had evidence that we had asked for the maintenance request we ended up suing...

Strong communication can be a motivator in itself. Demonstrating empathy and compassion can as well. Not treating employees in a 'one-size-fits-all fashion' will allow them to be their best selves and leverage their strongest attributes. Feeling as though one isn't just another replaceable cog in the machine can motivate employees to be consistent in their contribution in the long-run.

In industries like investment banking, private equity, sales etc.  employees are motivated by negative pressure. You are motivated to work 14 hour days and refrain from taking any vacation ever because everyone else does so, and if you don't conform, you will stand out in a negative way (and if you're still young, your higher ups will make it very clear that you'll get laid-off, even though you never agreed to work on those terms). Since these jobs have succeeded in creating a sense of glam, demand is high, and you are made to feel extremely replaceable. So you grind-away, motivated by the filthy rich future that's just out of your reach.

In other industries, employees are motivated by stability – consistent hours, consistent pay, very little change or unexpected events. Most people feel motivated in environments like these because they perform best in a predictable and easygoing life.

These are just two examples, but there's many, many ways to motivate many different kinds of people who find incentive in very different kinds of freedom.

Money is just a tool that can allow us to pursue greater visions that can bring true happiness. Letting go of expectations of what 'money' and 'happiness' mean is more likely to help many people find inner peace.

Be conscious of why you are where you are, and why you do what you do – every single step of the way. Don't compare yourself to others, and be okay with taking the routes others are afraid to take. I think the strongest people around me are those that have learned to let go, and understand many material things are merely tools but not ends in themselves.

Definitely give college a shot.

If you have no idea what you want to do, and what you're passionate about, that's okay! College is the best time in your life to explore all kinds of different things – not just academically speaking but also in terms of activities, sports, relationships, and so much more. It's entirely in your power to shape your experience in a way that is often lost once moving into the professional world.

You'll find that plenty of people around you *think* they know exactly where they're headed and what they want...but don't let that discourage you or detract you from applying to college. Most of these very same people will feel completely lost at some point in their careers as well (90% will exit college with entirely different plans than those they came in with). Remember, after college, you have the rest of your lifetime to explore the professional world, but college is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and it's pretty short, so take your time before joining the 'adult world'.
