Freezing upon quitting both Sgminer and Cgminer - linux xubuntu
by

Hiya

Im  on Xubuntu 12.04.02 With Catalyst 13.12, No SDK (as Ive understood its unnecessary on linux?), Cgminer 3.7.2 and Sgminer 4.0 - Harware config is a gigabyte Ud5 Mb, Amd fx 8 core CPU, 3 x HD7950 Sapphire radeons (have two more but only running three until this problem gets sorted), and 2 x corsair RM750's.

I have had stability issues from the beginning and have had to do a number of hard resets, due to system freezes.  The system freezing whilst in the process of mining was resolved by adding more ram.  Now Im running 2x2 and 2x4 (12 total).

When I run Cgminer or Sgminer, the system does fine until I try and quit.  When leaving either, after I hit the Q command, the system locks and I have to go into soft reset.  Initially I had thought this was a glitch with Cgminer and Linux, so I tried to install Sgminer, thinking that since Cgminer hasnt been updated for such a long time (for scrypt) that it would be a problem that had been resolved in SG.  The other freeze factor is once my monitor falls asleep, when I wake it the system also freezes.  Everytime it been running for over 5 minutes this occurs.  Within a 3-5 minute window, however, Im still able to quite either of the programs without freeze, and after hitting q, Im taken back to the command line directory where I chose ./cgminer.sh.

Ive done substantial research trying to figure out a number of combinations that have caused this - I was previously on Ubuntu, now Xubuntu, from Cg to Sg, etc.  Also have messed with the config file, and if Im extremely low on the intensity, it also doesnt happen in either - but these are pitiful hashrates of 300, or along those lines, and highly unacceptable for 7950s.

Hopefully someone has had similar experiences and can shed some light?

THANKSSS!

clDevicesNum returned error, no GPUs usable - SSH not showing hashes

So - I got info from an Ubuntu forum that allowed me to save the /etc/X11... file - which meant that none of the mentioned commands would work.  Actually what was needed was an updated command of : sudo amdconfig --adapter=all --initial every time a card is introduced.

Still, am having the same SSH issue - maybe someone has some input?  Will modify subject.

Radeon 7950s not recognized and failed permission to save /etc/X11/xorg.conf

I have a gigabyte UD5 MB, and am running between 3-5 Sapphire, radeon 7950 GPUs off an AMD, CPU and 2 x corsair 750 RM PSUs -

I have some questions with this configuration:

1) what command is meant to be used when introducing a GPU, or multiple GPUs to Ubuntu? When I try and do this it wont recognize them, or the recognition is inconsistent.

2) After reading a variety of forums, with many results, I tried different commands.

Atconfig --adapter=all --intitial -f

Atconfig --adapter=all --intitial

Atconfig --intitial

The only command that shows the true amount of GPUs is Atconfig --adapter=all --intitial but when I do this command I get a failure message saying 'Writing to '/etc/X11/xorg.conf failed. Permission denied. However, if I run Atconfig --intitial, it recognizes only one GPU, but will update and save /etc/X11/xorg.conf correctly.

The question with regard to the above information is a) How can I delete ALL versions of /etc/X11/xorg.conf that have been written, and b) how can I rewrite /etc/X11/xorg.conf to recognize all GPUs in the machine currently?

3rd question - My rig dies if I run it through the keyboard and monitor that are connected to the CPU/MB- If I run it through SSH it stays running with suggested config settings for the 7950s, yet somewhere along the line of the changes from the cammands listed above, my SSH stopped showing the GPUS and I get the following error:

[2014-02-19 18:57:11] Started cgminer 3.7.2 [2014-02-19 18:57:11] Loaded configuration file cgminer.conf [2014-02-19 18:57:11] clDevicesNum returned error, no GPUs usable [2014-02-19 18:57:11] No devices detected! [2014-02-19 18:57:11] Waiting for USB hotplug devices or press q to quit

Does anyone have any idea how to make the GPUs visible again?  They load on the main computer in cg startup, and I see all three (even if in the suggested previous questions I have problems with recognition - I think this is because a previous '/etc/X11/xorg.conf has them configured as 3 in their respective PCIE slots) but on the SSH I get nothing - only looks as if its hunting for blocks, but no hashrates, etc.

A friend configured the drivers, and Im totally clueless If I needed to reinstall drivers, would you recommend following this procedure - help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/AMD ?

I really, really appreciate any help possible.
Thank you!

7950 linux ubuntu atconfig / GPU recog issue HELLLLP

SO!

Have a few issues here -

Very little bg in linux. A friend installed it to get a miner up and running, but Im not too familiar with this much command interface, and might have created some issues.

I have a gigabyte UD5 MB, and am running between 3-5 Sapphire, radeon 7950 GPUs off an AMD, CPU and 2 x corsair 750 RM PSUs - I have been on a bit of a learning curve so at first I didnt even have risers, at that point I was two on the board and already having issues with GPU recognition. The 1 x 16 slot wasnt racognizing, and looking face down on the board, thats furthest left. I got 3 GPUs running at under 500 kh but then starting messing with the command line to introduce new ones, or a variation. This meant also messing with the cgminer config file to try and find a config that didnt freeze the OS. Later I figure out this was mainly a ram issue, but regardless, important I explain, I have done an absurd amount of hard reboots.

SO - I finally got the machine to run overnight on 3 gpus that were on non-powered 16x16 risers. Then I got my molex powered ones in the mail, so I thought I'd try them. When I introduced them, the aticonfig command wouldnt recognize them. The motherboard has 5 slots, so I tried all of them with the new powered risers, only to thing they are screws. When I tried to pute the old risers back in, cgminer wont find the third. It always finds 0 and 1 (0 is my monitor) but two wont show up. If I run:

atconfig --adapter=all --intitial

it shows all three - but still wont register in CGminer

and if I run

atconfig --adapter=all --intitial -f

it fails as well

both are saying that writing to the file name failed.

Im really new at linux so am pretty clueless about how to ammend - If anyone can help, in very simple terms Id really appreciate it.

Also, Id really like to be able to introduce the 4th GPU but it seems the 1x16slot isnt even responsive and even locks up the OS - I dont get it...

Using CGminer 3.7.2 Ubuntu 12.04 processor AMD FX(tm)-8320 x 8

PLEASSSE!!! DYING HERE!!

linux Ubuntu 5 7950 GPU rig low hash and freezing

Hopefully someone may be able to assist..

Ive set up my new miner running cgminer, and I am hashing - but getting extremely low results and the computer keepd freezing.

I have tried a variety of variations on the config file, but the current one is:

"intensity" : "16",
"vectors" : "1",
"shaders" : "1792",
"thread-concurrency" : "8960",
"gpu-engine" : "925",
"gpu-memclock" : "1350",
"gpu-powertune" : "20",
"gpu-threads" : "1",
"worksize" : "256",
"scrypt" : true,
"kernel" : "scrypt",
"kernel-path" : "/usr/local/bin",
"lookup-gap" : "2"

I can get a higher hashrate upping the intensity, but then the whole system freezes within an hour.  On the current settings I can run overnight (did the first diagnostic yesterday eve), but am averaging 1.4 mh on three cards (around 4-450 each), and if I introduce more cards the system crashes within minutes.  Also, even when Im only running three, everything runs fine unless I even touch the mouse, then the hashrate stops (Im using my laptop on SSH to command the miner).

The only conclusion that I could come to, is that I dont have enough Ram - Im running  4 gb (2x2) of corsair ram - and the problem that keeps occurring, i.e system freeze is symptomatic of not having enough ram - although it could be a lot of other things as well I suppose (bad version of linux, etc..).

You'll notice the thread concurrency is quite low, I did this as a result of seeing something somewhere about the TC and low ram balance..

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks

Has anyone had similar problems

I think it is safe to assume the price after the initial launch will be a little unreasonable... probably a great time for miners to sell though.

How long do you think it will take to settle?  A lot hype saying it might not turn back..
