Overwhelming world of information
by
neuro-artisan
on 28/09/2017, 16:32:02 UTC
Today we live in a world of information - you turn on TV, radio, watch some websites and you know what's going on around the world, newest tech inventions etc. in a matter of minutes.
Sounds great, doesn't it? Well, for me it's too damn overwhelming.
In the past months, I've applied the "information diet". I don't waste time anymore on 9gag tier websites or read any politics-related news at all.
Now I'm only focused on websites that are about the topics that I care about and interested in.

But still, there's too much of it all. There are more than 5 videos on YouTube daily, multiple news to read and even more topics to look into, research and learn.
I feel so overwhelmed Embarrassed

How do you guys stay focused and going forward? Because I lost my track - I want to do so many things but end up doing nothing - that's the worst feeling Huh

Re: Question about soft and hard fork
by

Interesting! In your opinion, how has the btc fork affected the bitcoin community so far? any concerns in the future? Thanks in advance for your opinion

Good question. From the sources I receive my information from I get the feeling, that the majority of interested bitcoin users (people who follow bitcoin news, are somehow active on twitter/reddit or here in this forum) have closed the case Bitcoin Cash. This topic is not that hot anymore as both sides have their preferred solution now and are more or less happy with it.

The segwit2x topic is much more a topic at the moment as it will produce another hardfork in November. None of the sides really want to split Bitcoin again, but the positions on both sides are cemented. No one want to move towards the other side. So I think a split will definitely happen. The big fight until this split will be, who can convince the majority of miners, nodes, users, eco system etc. for their side.

The segwit2x fork will definitely create more chaos as the 2x supporter don't plan to implement a replay protection. Experienced Bitcoin users might not have a problem with it, because there are ways to safely split their coins in case of the fork, but the average user might not have the knowledge to do it. And people who never heard before about that fork may lose some money because of missing replay protection. Also people who don't control their own private keys, might not get access to their new "free" coins.

So, my biggest concern is the missing replay protection. The real support for one of the two sides we will only see after the fork happened. Hard to predict the future.
Also I'm concerned that in future this kind of forks could become common practice. I think this could weaken the Bitcoin brand in the worst case.

In terms of Bitcoin, I think the Bitcoin Core developers and their supporters have done more "proof of work" for their side, than the segwit2x developers/community.

Very insightful reply.
I myself have been thinking about moving my BTC funds to other cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin Cash or Ethereum. Most people say BTC price will drop before Segwit2x activation and I tend to agree with that, as people will be fearful about this event. So, I think we can expect price rise after Segwit2x is done.

Hardware wallets newbie questions

Hello, I'm planning to buy a hardware wallet for myself.
I wonder if you need to synchronize your wallet from time to time in order to make sure your cryptocurrencies are not lost or something?
Another thing is - can those wallets break down over time so you won't be able to run them? What then, have you lost all of your cryptos there? Or what if you simply lose your hardware wallet, is there any remotely based recovery option?
Can any kind of malware steal your funds or private key or anything at all?

And what is the best hardware wallet in your opinion and why (compare it to others if you can)?

It all depends on how China is going to regulate things, I hear different stories everywhere.
This.
Also, I think the situation with BTC will become clear only after SegWit 2x upgrade.

For now I will HODL my coins Wink

I think when you go all-in in BTC, you should invest your money periodically. Not all at once and also try to buy at dips. That's for the long-term.

Of course, you can make lots of money when you go all-in in a matter of days (look at the latest dip below 3k now it's over 3,5k) but it's way riskier and short-term strategy.

OKcoin and Huobi may close their business as well.

But if I think about crypto exchanges, there will be decentralized exchanges based on blockchain. So I don't think we will suffer in the long term.

Re: Segwit2x upgrade
by
neuro-artisan

Can upcoming Segwit2x destabilize BTC in the long run? And do you expect some price volatility with that?

It depends on many factors:
- how much mining hashrate will mine Segwit2x and how much will stay with "Olde Bitcoin"?
- will "the economy" (Bitcoin businesses, from whose many have signed the New York Agreement) try to convince their clients to upgrade to Segwit2x?
- if Segwit2x "wins" the battle, will Bitcoin Core developers "accept it" and change to the BTC1 team (with some grudging) to keep their influence?

The most "destabilizing" scenario is actually if the economy and the community stay divided and no one of the "two Bitcoins" wins the battle in a decisive way. Let's say Bitcoin Core retains 30-40% of the hashrate and Segwit2x 60-70%.

Otherwise, things are more simple:
- If Bitcoin Core manages to keep the majority of the hashrate, I think the Segwit2x fork will not succeed because miners rapidly would return. I think the Core team has still much more influence than all development teams of alternative implementations, so they will also retain most users if they are not forced to change (see next scenario).
-  But if the miners keep supporting Segwit2x in an overwhelming way (about 85% support it), then Bitcoin Core will have a hard time because the long block times will make it almost unusable. Average block times, for more than a month, would be at least three times (or more) higher than now. That means a drastically loss on transaction capacity (-70%). In this case it could be rational for the parts of "the economy" that do not support Segwit2x to simply accept Segwit2x as the "standard" Bitcoin because otherwise they would lose potential income.

People like to spread FUD saying that there will be some sort of crash with price. Similar things have been said before 1st August and BTC actually went bullish up to 5k.
Do you believe this upgrade will push Bitcoin to 10.000$ levels?

Actually, both forks are very different: Bitcoin Cash positioned itself as an altcoin with different branding and replay protection. Segwit2x is an upgrade proposal, although many Bitcoiners would never accept it as "the Bitcoin", the people promoting it do - and if they've only a slight chance to succeed, they will do everything to win the battle.

I think for an optimist scenario when one of the chains definitively has won, $10K are possible but unlikely (I think even now Bitcoin is slightly overvalued), my guess would be a new attack to $5000 (that will most likely fail) and a stabilization between $3000 and $4500. But in the scenario I described as the "worst case", I wouldn't be surprised if both chains' tokens fall below $1000.

We have answers to your questions already. Bitcoin Core is not supporting btc1 (segwit2x, I want to clarify, because noobs get confused: btc1=segwit2x enforcing client, similarly, Bitcoin ABC=Bitcoin Cash enforcing client).

Bitcoin Core members will abandon the Bitcoin project, or at least the most relevant ones, since if btc1 wins, Bitcoin is dead since it would be demonstrated that a coup of corporations can gather and put their own developers taking over the Bitcoin project.

It's obvious Bitcoin would suffer from a crash if btc1 wins.

The most likely outcome: More miners and vendors will drop from NYA (we already saw a couple) and segwit2x will not be able to hardfork without massive damage, which would make them irresponsible.

http://nob2x.org/

I was expecting the crash we are seeing in november, not september.

Then I was expecting a failure of segwit2x, and after confirming we would avoid the hardfork, skyrocketing to $10,000+

Sounds dangerous. Wanted to invest heavily in BTC, but don't think I will do that any time soon. If BTC will be damaged, do you think coins like ETH / LTC etc. may take BTC's place? And how will it affect the whole crypto market?

Can upcoming Segwit2x destabilize BTC in the long run? And do you expect some price volatility with that?
I think the worst case scenario would happen when 3rd Bitcoin will emerge. I don't think it will be healthy for our crypto ecosystem.

People like to spread FUD saying that there will be some sort of crash with price. Similar things have been said before 1st August and BTC actually went bullish up to 5k.

It may go because just like previous segwit2x we got duplicate of btc as another altcoin same thing we will get another altcoin and both this altcoin will move high for some time but in long run the original btc will only survive and go up. So i think this segwit2x will only create another altcoin which is good oppurtunity for bitcoin holders to get another altcoin freely and encash it to sell and make more btc profit.

Yeah, "free money" is nice but in the long run it may hurt crypto space.

Upcoming segwit x2 event may be the most important factor stopping the price from rise.
Can you elaborate?

Buy some BTC now and some more later maybe.
I've heard rumors that when BTC will be getting Segwit2x upgrade there might be some some sort of price crash. Not sure about it tho, people talked same thing before August 1. And the price actually went bullish up to 5k.

Arbitrage
by
neuro-artisan
on 13/09/2017, 10:01:22 UTC
So let's say I've found two different exchanges where prices of selected cryptocurrencies is varying quite a bit.
How to arbitrage?

Should I buy some BTC at let's say 3.700 then send this amount to second exchange where I will sell it for 3.900? The profit here is that I have more fiat and I can't really multiply this process (or maybe I can send earned money to the first exchange again, but it takes a lot of time).

Am I seeing this right?

Becoming a freelancer?
by
neuro-artisan
on 12/09/2017, 18:43:58 UTC
Hey, do we got some people here that are freelancers?
Can you please elaborate on what are you doing / specified in? What are the most desired skills and where you are finding the job?

This thread can serve as inspiration for myself and others who are thinking about gaining some new skills and become more independent people instead of working in full-time jobs which they hate for the rest of their lives.
I, for example, decided to learn coding / programming. The first thing about that is - we live in highly advanced society when it comes to technology, so to better understand and grasp the whole world and face threats, I believe we should learn those skills. You know, it's like in the past where most people didn't knew how to read or write - it wasn't necessary to live but very useful. Secondly - it will be desired skill nearly everywhere in the next one / two decades.

Thanks for replies guys Smiley

Will look into Qtum, Waves and Stratis (good mid-term holdings I guess), also ARK seems like an interesting position.

Well, at least 2-3/4 coins will be held for a long term without even touching it.
Although this thread is mainly about my long term holdings doesn't mean I won't hold some coins for mid term (half of a year or something).

I think following diversification rules will be fine:
- 50% of portfolio for low risk coins but possibly lower gains [long-term]
- 25-30% for average risk [mid-term]
- 20-25% for higher risk investments (including ICOs) [short-term]

I'm planning to invest big chunk of my money into cryptocurrencies. I'm absorbing all informations since April 2017. So I'm still quite new but I feel confident enough.
I want to buy some hardware wallet like Trezor and put my money there. Everyday I'm reading news, watch youtube channels and others. Even attended on one blockchain meetup.
This whole stuff is taking so much time and is kinda stresfull but very fascinating at once.
I'm not gonna put all of my money at once, I will do it periodically in the upcoming months.

The main reason I'm doing that is I wanna invest my money so it would work for me and bring profits over time (I want to hold crypto for 2 years at least).
Other than that I wanna focus on other life aspects so daytrading isn't an option, I want to take some time off from crypto-sphere.

Here's my picks for long term hodling Cheesy
  • BTC (I'm thinking of 40-60% for the whole portfolio)
  • ETH
  • LTC
  • LSK
  • DASH
  • NXS
  • ETC

I'm only thinking of coins with future, as some of you may know there is a lot of coins that will eventually go down to zero.
What coins have bright future in your opinion? What do you think so far of my approach?

2 of those and maybe 3 should be removed from long term holdings. If you can’t guess which ones I mean you need to research more.

Don’t buy Monero. Just kidding. Monero would be a good addition.

Well, the ones I will surely buy will be BTC, ETH, LSK and some LTC. I'm not sure about DASH, NXS, ETC tho.
ETC could be good for mid-term after ETH goes for PoS (after hardfork). Actually forgot about XMR (maybe I will consider small amount of it) but even the Monero's developer have said to not buy that coin Cheesy (I think I've read that somewhere). So, buy or not?

Any other suggestions, anyone?

I think some minor countries can close exchanges like China did.
But in the long run it wouldn't cause much harm, rather buying opportuinities when price drops.
