If you can't afford to buy VTC at current prices, there are other ASIC-resistant coins available. MicroCoin is especially cheap right now.

Re: Which altcoins have features that make them in any way superior to Bitcoin ?
by

Some people have promoted GridCoin and PrimeCoin as coins that potentially have better features than BitCoin. However, I don't see how this kind of feature will lead to massively increased adoption. Sure, you might feel good about helping people when you mine GridCoin, but the fact that your processor cycles are going somewhere useful doesn't actually positively affect the ease of adoption of the coin itself, with regards to its usefulness as a currency.

Plus, with GridCoin, there's the added security headache that comes from a possible breach of the computers that manage the supercomputing work (I'm not an expert, so I may be mistaken here). If GridCoins were $1000 a piece, people would be attacking that infrastructure like crazy.

VertCoin is too expensive right now, but you can get microCoin very cheap, and it's similar.

MemoryCoin (MMC) is coming to the end of its inflationary period, and it's gotten cheap now too. Buy 1K for about $50.

I would also buy some AnonCoin.

Good find. It looks like they have an interesting service built upon datacoin.

I'm only investing very small amounts at this point. If I were to buy into datacoin, for example, I'd probably only buy $50 worth. I can easily afford to lose that much.

I think that Pandora's box has been opened. The cryptocurrency technology exists and we're just going to have to learn to live with it's existence, just like with other powerful technologies like nuclear weapons.

I understand that some people might have some misgivings about fully anonymous coins like darkcoin or cryptocurrency in general, but it just isn't going to go away.

Another question: has anyone spent any money to upload data to the datacoin blockchain? What was the user experience like? Do you feel that it was money well-spent?

Some thoughts on investing in datacoin: potential money-maker or not?
by
nobodysbusiness

I've been watching the price of datacoin drop lately, and I've been thinking about investing. I've already invested in MemoryCoin (MMC) and datacoin seems to be at a similar price-point right now. Some analysis:

With MMC, there's 10 Mil coins before 2% inflation kicks in, so if you wanted 1/10000 of the initial 10 Mil, it would cost about $100.

However, I found this thread on datacoin:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=358592.0

It says that there will be 2 Billion max datacoins, so buying the same 1/10000 of the coins would cost about $17000. Something doesn't add up...

Is the max coins figure from the above thread incorrect? Or will the max coins not be hit for centuries?

Maybe there's someone on this forum that can advocate for datacoin and explain the situation...

I'm pretty sure that someone already did something similar to this. Anyone remember the name of the coin?

You had to at least move your coins (possibly back into your own wallet) once per year to prove that the wallet wasn't lost. If not, your coins would disappear and go back into the general pool to be mined again or something.

Re: Most *profitable* cryptocurrency idea!
by
nobodysbusiness
on 20/02/2014, 00:09:25 UTC
If you had a certain price on exchanges (let's say $0.50 USD per coin), and you wanted to increase the profitability of this coin, you'd have to increase the reward so that people could mine more with a given hashrate. This would mean that your coin's network would have to be producing more coins overall. Your miners (in the short-term) could then sell these coins for $0.50 each and make more money, but people would quickly wise-up and realize that the coins are not as rare as they were before, and the price on exchanges would plummet.

Sorry. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that this is a workable idea.

Thanks for the list! I hope that you'll keep it updated as more anonymous coins come out.

I think that the anonymization feature is a big one that could lead to significant growth for the right coin. I hope that I can get in on the ground floor for zerocoin.

Here's another one called ZcCoin:
https://cryptocointalk.com/topic/992-zccoin-zcc-information/

It's main site is mostly written in Chinese. This could actually be a good thing as the lack of English could discourage people from investing, keeping the price low, for now. Perhaps I'll pick up some of them... or not...

Adaptive Nfactor cryptocurrencies

I've missed the boat on Vertcoin, but I'd be interested in investing in another cryptocurrency with the adaptive Nfactor algorithm.

I read here on the forum that there are other Nfactor coins out there. For example, I'm pretty sure that microcoin is SCrypt-Jane with a modified Nfactor. What are some other adaptive Nfactor coins out there? Any that people would recommend investing in?

I'm glad that this guy was able to make a lot of money from Doge, but I don't think that this plan will just work for an unlimited number of people. The more people who try to mine as soon as a new coin is launched, the higher the difficulty will be minutes after launch. This lowers the number of coins that each person will get, etc...

This should be obvious to the old timers on the forum, of course.

Re: Mining MAXCOIN with Laptop is there any point?
by

I haven't heard of MAXCoin. There's a thread with a list of CPU-only coins here:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=379601.0

Perhaps MAXCoin should be on that list? If you can't get MAXCoin using just your CPU, then you can probably pick another coin on that list to mine.
