Waiting to receive 5 more risers to get to 9x R9 290 on this rig (~7500 KH/s for ~3000W).
2 MOBO and will be 3 PSU.
Cheap wooden prototype case.
Will stack 3 like this, hopefully not torching the place Smiley

Did you have trouble getting your R9 290s running stable? I have nothing but trouble with 4x even with the latest drivers. BAMT won't go into Xorg with more than 1 card and Windows crashes as soon as I get to 3. 280x's work fine...

Everyone has trouble with 290's. If you aren't recompiling cgminer or using one with a pre-modified ADL library you probably won't get them to work.

The 290 has powertune 6, or something like that. The 280 uses powertune 5, which is what the 79xxx series used. Cgminer/bamt are built around powertune 5, so the calls and commands the 290 expects never come. This is why it'll bluescreen out on windows if you press "q" to quit.

280x's didn't work on BAMT for over a month, not unless you recompiled it with the 13.11 beta drivers yourself. The 290 situation is similar, but worse.

Much thanks for the bump in the right direction! Now I got some thing to try. From what I've read, I can most likely pull it off... Hours of Googling did not lead me to this. THANK YOU

How are you cooling it and what temps are the cards running at?

You can see from picture. He has "open window mod" .  Cheesy

Use the same resistors you would use for making a dummy plug. They are a perfect firm fit to stick far down in the hole. Get your mind out of the gutter. Available at radioshack.

I feel I've been scammed. My last post was deleted by fluffypony. Apparently if you wait over 45 days then paypal wont let you dispute the charge. Well it's been 3 months and I see no product. I am call my credit card company right now. Don't fall for this scam.

I don't think it's fair to call it a scam. You misunderstood the shipping times like a lot of other people.  I am order 767 and still waiting.  Although I'm losing faith I'll ever receive it because I'll be moving before the end of March. :-/

I didn't misunderstand. I've been waiting over 10 weeks since it was shipped, which took a month from the time of order. I would say I've been pretty patient considering its been 3 months since I placed the order. I don't think anything is coming.

I have 7 cards setup - works ok, but requires a monitor to boot. 5 cards setup on same MB - does not require monitor connected - not sure what this problem connected to (

Micax1, on the ASRock Z87 Killer (Fatal1ty), did you have to short any of the pins in the PCI-e slots to get all 7 GPUs to work/be recognized?

I'm running 2x rigs with 6x GPUs per on this same board. Works fine, but i can't get the 7th working or I get video errors when the Xorg tries to start. Possible driver issue (R9 290s and R9 280Xs)? Other than that the board is a champ, but yet it requires shorting of anything other than a 16x->16x riser, so that means USB risers require shorting in all ports. I'd avoid the first 1x as it seems to be the most problematic.

Just so you guys are aware, a lot of these cards seem to be shipping with low amounts of thermal compound on the chip. Out of 13 I've so far had to replace the compound on 2. So if you see a card running with really high temps compared to the rest with 100% fan and lower than normal hashrates, then I'd check it. Perhaps the thermal compound is just burning out from heavy use but I constantly monitor them and one was brand new out the package. Also noticed a high amount of dust trapped in the heatsink, so be sure to blow that out if you're in a dusty area.

There was a time when I had all 6 cards detecting, but only one would hash. Cgminer would give me an ADL mismatch. Different drivers fixed the problem.

ADL mismatch is a bug in cgminer 3.7.2 for the R9 290(x). New sgminer 4.0.0 has bugfixes to fix it!

I tried moving my mem clocks up to 1500 but ended up putting back to 1350. I read on LTCtalk that 1250 is better. Will be trying when I have a chance. Right now I get 880 with 1000/1350. I want to see 900-950 stable.

Okay, I've been able to successfully get BAMT up with 6 cards on the Fatal1ty Killer mobo. As soon as I add the 7th, Xorg won't start and it crashes on boot. Just letting you guys know. Stick to 6 or less with this board.

I've found a super easy way to short the 1x presence pins. Take a 68 ohm resister (same thing you use to make dummy plugs) and use that to short the 2 slots in the bus. No more trying to cut down wires. No more bending before they fully insert. It works instantly. Hope I save someone here countless hours.

Hi Guys

I see you all talking about the Z87 Killer

i Have the Z87 EXTREME4, but i have the same issue, after i have put 3 cards in the 4th one will not be detected at all Sad

i have tried the  2, 1, 1 setting for PCIE 16 slots , still wont work.

my board is set up like this , i am doing 2 direct connection and 2 USB raiser

for raiser cables i am using USB ones like this  http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/251427594175?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

so i wont need jumper if i am correct?

1 PCIE x1      USB raiser
2 PCIE x16     Directly pluged in
3 PCIE x1

4 PCIE x16
5 PCI
6 PCIE x16      Directly plunged in
7 PCI

i put the 4th card (on usb raiser) in slot 4 or slot 1 it just wont work Sad

can anyone help?

thank you

I currently have 5x plugged in on risers on 2 identical rigs. Going to expand this to 7x when I get a chance. Sometimes the presence pin shorts are shotty and you just gotta redo it, or you got bad risers. Could be a whole host of stuff.

Okay so I figured I'd let everyone here know, sgminer 4.0.0 (cgminer 3.7.2 fork) has added support for a comma-seperated gpu-threads value. This should make it possible to run diff model cards all from the same instance of sgminer. This script is obsolete (sorry OP). Sgminer is scrypt only BTW. Also included in this great fork is many fixes to make the R9 290s stable! Fantastic stuff.

I'm not using this specific board, but I am using a board that provides extra molex connector which supplements the PCI-E lanes. It is also ASRock brand, but higher quality. I am running 5x R9 280x per board. I use all powered risers and the extra molex on the board. Did your comment apply only to the specific board that was on topic or all with PCI-E supplement molex? I've been successfully running 2x rigs (clones) this same way for almost 3 months now with no issues...

From what I understand, molex connectors generally provide around 75w of power per connector. 75w spread over 5-7 PCI-E lanes is not much for a power hungry GPU. Now 75w extra per card (via riser) is a good solution to get the card the power it needs. I don't think it would fry it. It's not going to pull anymore power than the GPU is asking it for. Generally PCI-E lanes are burnt out when you don't use powered risers because the card is trying to pull more power through the bus then the bus is designed to handle. This is why you supplement on the riser itself. Just because the power is available doesn't mean the GPU is using it. This is given the exception of a power surge, in which case the power is forcefully pushed into the circuit and therefore the hardware that is not designed to handle so much current which ends up frying it.

I suppose it all depends on how many GPUs you intend on running off the board what you would need to do. Personally I would always use powered risers for all GPUs.

Would it be ok to go with non powered risers with 3 cards only on H81 BTC Pro with molex connectors on the board ?

Maybe? But why would you risk frying your expensive hardware over 50 bucks in risers (at most)?
