Re: Cloud mining : is Google Compute Engine a game changer ?

The only viable options I've seen are:

Cloudhashing.com (The price makes sense... against mining calculator I checked a few days ago, it should make ~$1600 a year if you spend $999 for the silver contract.

Digitalocean.com - Because the price is only .005 an hour for a linux machine, you can make a little money each month if you mine primecoin and sometimes memorycoin, but their price drops are hurting the profitability.

Also, butterflylabs is offering a $10/GH, which makes financial sense at current price of ~630. Still, this is only a pre-order option. (The $30/GH option through nimbus doesn't make sense).

I'm also very interested in learning details regarding the casino... When can you buy in? How? (I know it's 5000 for .1%).

We have passed our stated launch time of 12pm EST March 3.  Embarrassed  Pity we have not launched due to clouds (of the AWS variety).

We can already see the price dropping at none of the exchanges we have never been listed on.

Stay calm. Fair launch is still in play. We want to launch correctly, and with that in mind we thank you for your patience.

The next launch window of opportunity will be on March 11th 10am EST.

In the meantime, please join our main forum at: forum.educoin.cc and discuss just how much pizza college students can buy with EduCoin!  Grin

-EduCoin Dev Team

Thanks for updating launch.

Who is the developer? Why the anonymity? Do you have any partnerships with MOOC's or anyone in the education sphere? How will this coin get to students in a fair way?

I like the idea, but I feel like for this to really impact education (and students specifically) the team may need to consider these questions.

Instead of only faucets, maybe the "foundation" disperses coins to students for scholarships, etc.?

Careers in bitcoin? I wasn't aware this was a job sector yet (outside of maybe 50 or so jobs in entire US seeking people with explicit background/knowledge of bitcoin). Do you mind if I ask where you're applying?

Re: Price at end of 2014?
by

Looks to me that bitcoin keeps trying to get above $1000 and then losing support. I think we may have to wait at least a few more months for the infrastructure to grow a new price foundation before we get any serious growth in prices again.

So basically guessing around $950.

That being said, I am wrong more than I am right. Which is why I only buy and hold. I am good at investing (seeing the fundamentals), terrible at speculating (anticipating herd behavior).

This sums up my experience as well.

Only two events worry me long-term with bitcoin:

1) The wide-spread acceptance and use of a crypto 2.0 like Ethereum is the only development that I believe could set bitcoin back.

2) Massive unloading of bitcoin by the minority that own the majority of existing bitcoins.

Of these two, I think the first is the only real worry. (Even if a minority unloaded bitcoin, this would only corrode the value of Bitcoin in the short term).

Interesting analysis, thanks for some new thoughts! While investing in most altcoins is like a gamble, and you are right that bitcoins should be the main part of the portfolio, I will suggest also to take a closer look into next generation of coins - NXT, new protocols over bitcoin like MSC and XCP, and few coming projects.

And by the way, what do you think about Darkcoin?

Seconded. I've been watching Darkcoin for some time from afar... would be interested to read an educated assessment of it.

It's an awesome product, but not cost-effective for mining BitCoin anymore... still fun and I still have a set running, though! (Just a warning for people paying $50 for these off amazon).

This coin lost 94.99 % of total market on coinmarketcap.com? wtf happened?

Look at those buyers prices on poloniex, those who sell their coins to them at such a low price is making the value fall. They will regret it in the long term. If it wasn't for them it would be way higher also we need more miners here lets hope with the casino coming it will get more visibility.

I am enjoying buying these cheap coins.

Cheesy

Thats exactly what i do Smiley Buy those cheap coins they will regret it at some point.

Agreed... it's too early to sell Prospercoin, especially before LazyCoins + potential Cryptsy add.

I solo-mine this on one of my pc's with 70Kh/s and average 1-3 blocks per day, so it's doable... if you're lucky you can "beat" the pools, though long-term pool vs. solo should average out theoretically.

I like you're analysis, and I'm interested in creating some type of rubric and/or analytical model for ranking newer altcoins, specifically. While I think I'll use some form of your 3 q's for the financial part of my rank model, do you have recommendations for any of the other areas? (Or other recommended posts).

1) Developers- Is there a strong development team? Are they active on the forums and present? What is their track record with previous projects? Can they compile a windows and os x wallet?

2) Financials- Inflation? Decentralization? Will this be listed on exchanges? Are there any vendors (or a target audience) that plans to use and exchange this coin? Does it have a viable chance of being used for internet tipping, game development, apps, environmentally-friendly research, etc.?

3) Community- Are people excited about the coin? Do people actually post on the reddit page for the coin?

4) Uniqueness- Does the coin offer anything new or novel? Does it correctly implement Kimoto Gravity Well? Does it have special block rewards? Is it the next Ethereum or crypto 2.0? OR... is it copypasta salad?

It's insane that dev responded saying there is "plenty of gravity."

No knowledge of Kimoto Gravity Well is a little scary on part of dev.

Re: dogecoin LIED and created the illusion of popularity when no-one liked it

Interesting theory... tbh though, even if they "created the illusion" of popularity with less than savory forum tactics, this hardly explains how and why they became as popular as they did.

I've tried to "create the illusion of popularity," and it's hardly a scalable and/or profitable endeavor unless REAL people are excited in the product you are selling.

Also, they're hardly the first altcoin to create the "illusion of popularity." A more interesting question (if we take your claim as valid) is: Why were their tactics so wildly successful?

Will new altcoins FAIL?
by
odetopsyche
on 24/02/2014, 00:03:46 UTC
Will new altcoins FAIL? Or will they succeed?

What factors do you use to determine which coins are worth mining (and which not)?

I just coded a basic version of http://altcoinrank.com that will list (and eventually rank) new alt coins, and wanted general feedback on the site and idea.

1) What basic information do you want to know on new coins? (I'm guessing max coins, premine, etc..>)

2) What are useful when you're deciding whether or not to mine a new coin and if you're going to "invest" in it? My tentative categories are:

  • Developers- Is there a strong development team? Are they active on the forums and present? What is their track record with previous projects? Can they compile a windows and os x wallet?
  • Financials- Will this be listed on exchanges? Are there any vendors (or a target audience) that plans to use and exchange this coin? Does it have a viable chance of being used for internet tipping, game development, apps, environmentally-friendly research, etc.?
  • Community- Are people excited about the coin? Do people actually post on the reddit page for the coin?
  • Uniqueness- Does the coin offer anything new or novel? Does it correctly implement Kimoto Gravity Well? Does it have special block rewards? Is it the next Ethereum or crypto 2.0? OR... is it copypasta salad?

Let me know your thoughts, coin hunters!

Not to be a hater, but what made this coin "special" besides the nice name?  Huh I was amazed at the launch reception on here when:

  • It's premined (although, to their credit, it is apparently being being distributed via promotions with some level of transparency)
  • It doesn't implement Kimoto Gravity Well or anything to guard against pump & dump.
  • No unique block rewards (like lottocoin, etc.)
  • The logo isn't smooth! The general shape is cool, but I would lose graphic design contracts if I submitted images with wild pixels and rough edges!

I guess I just don't understand why some coins get lots of attention while others- with debatably better/more unique features (like prospercoin recently)-don't. Any theories around why this coin got the attention it did?

I solo-mined a block about 6 hours ago  Smiley. My wallet says there have been 1 out of 6 confirmations and that it will mature in 34 blocks  Sad.

Is it common for mining rewards to take this long before maturation?
